    Had the bow set up at a pro shop. It performed just fine ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxQEKUoxLWwayEDZR0NKB-5limn4MBU-2L . And I would say this is a good starting now that I could pass down to my son when he is older.But the package was missing the release and a nock was missing from one arrow.Dealing with customer support was terrible. They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.

    Water has much more drag than air. When you release the bow string underwater the strings drag is increased due to the density and resistance of the water along with turbulence behind the string as well.

      Makes sense, Now I'm thinking about a spear gun or that hand held spear with the rubber band at the bottom, so because the other two aren't necessarily dragging through the water the power is directed more to the spear correct? Learned something new today. Thanks for your comment.

      Also, when the bow itself has to unbend, this also has a big effect on drag. I think It could be one of the main reasons.

    It could be the arrow needs to be made of metal like a speargun shaft and a stronger pull! But I am only guessing but it was worth a try!

      That’s why spear gun use rubber to load and release energy. Only the arrow moves unlike a bow where the string needs to drive the arrow, it’s a lot of drag in dense water. The deeper the worse it gets too as the water is even denser.

    After attempting to snorkel unsuccessfully probably a dozen times on vacations in the Caribbean A guide in St Marten inquired why I wasn't in the water with everyone else snorkeling . I explained to him that It's like fighting for my life every time because every time I try yo snorkel, after a few minutes tops , water enters my mask and I feel like I'm drowning , so it isn't any fun for me . He suggested I shave my mustache which I had worn all my life and was quite bushy . So I shaved it off on a trip to Cozumel so that I could try snorkeling again , but still had the same problem , an so I have given up on snorkeling . Apparently it is just not for me .

    Interesting experiment. I thought of the drag on the string right off but what occurred to me after watching this was the water pressure on the limbs of the bow must be immense compared to the string. Those big flat arms are not going to move easily through the water. Always fun to try stuff out and see what happens. Science! Thank you for this brother.

    Rob I swear i did not see that grouper either until it moved. Another thing that's pretty cool to think about is, you know how you were going down to the bottom through the school of bait fish. Well looking through what the camera was catching it was so disorienting the way the school of bait fish move, now you see how this helps them avoid predators on a normal basis. I couldn't focus for the life of me on any particular spot when looking directly at them. Very cool. So it seems you have to be within a foot to actually tag and kill a fish with the compound bow. That scenery is breathtaking regardless so i enjoyed this very much. You should try and get a video shot of the cast net from the bottom and watch the cast net drop over the fish, that would be cool.

    Your string has so much drag underwater that it is not propelling the arrow with the speed you need. Essentially the viscosity of the water won't allow the bow to propel the arrow to the speed it will in air. Once the arrow is at speed, it cuts through the water just fine.

    Probably have to increase the gears and tension along with much more rigid limbs. I bet a high powered crossbow would work. Im sure you would be able to pull a bow strong enough to get some distance penetration. Makes you really appreciate how a speargun works. I bet the rubber expanding and contracting deals with the issue of the water that would slow down a stringed bow.

    Hi Robert, my name is Daniel Balderas.
    I agree with Luis. It is all about physics.
    Water is highly density liquid on this planet and objects have a tough way to move through it except for the fish and mammals in the ocean they were designed to move through it your arrow from your compound bow is aerodynamic but it does not have enough Force to move it through the water. The scientific formula for this is forced times mass equals movement or distance.F×M=D.

  • @poorfatman5317
    @poorfatman5317 2 роки тому +2

    The resistance underwater under on a bow is much greater than the air above the water so you lose a lot of velocity

  • @carsonmacleod9752
    @carsonmacleod9752 2 роки тому +2

    much like if you were to try and slap someone while underwater, the water would add too much resistance for it to be a forceful slap. With a compound bow, much of the force behind the bow string comes from the idler wheel forcing back into the forward position, but the water around you adds too much resistance to the idler wheels and string for there to be a forceful return to effectively launch the arrow

  • @jamesthe-doctor8981
    @jamesthe-doctor8981 2 роки тому +5

    It must be the difference in density of water vs air. I’m not a ballistics expert, but I’d guess that the arrow can’t gain enough velocity when *released in water* due to the dramatic increase in initial drag it’s not designed for. Releasing in air allows it to build that velocity before entering the water. The same goes for bullets, according to an old episode of Mythbusters.

    • @mstrdiver
      @mstrdiver 2 роки тому +2

      I would also posit that the water will impede the bowstring's forward momentum due to friction, so there should be as least two physical forces including the coefficient of drag working in tandem to limit the distance and striking impact of the arrow.

    • @malnutritionboy
      @malnutritionboy 2 роки тому +1

      the arrow is too light and probably not long enough. longer slender and dense object cut through and maintain their momentum better in water. The bow as well too much drag in water for efficient release of energy. easy fix is to modify the bow till it looks like a spear gun lol

    • @jamesthe-doctor8981
      @jamesthe-doctor8981 2 роки тому +1

      Agreed. The bow’s limbs are also impeded, subtracting even more energy. A spear gun has no such limiting profile, which is why they’re best for spearfishing.

    The answer is pretty simple: DRAG and SURFACE AREA,. When you release the arrow there's too much resistance (DRAG) acting against the FLAT surface of the bow limbs and there are two of them on your bow, thus the applied force on the arrow is reduced. The bow's power comes from its two FLAT bow limbs combined with a string. A speargun's power comes only from its' ROUNDED elastic band. Another thing is the FLIPPING ACTION of the bow as compared to the PULLING ACTION of the speargun. As the arrow is released, the flipping action of the bow exposes more surface area of the limbs as it unfolds therefore the drag is increased. On the other hand the drag (if there's any) acting on the elastic band of the speargun is constant. In fact I doubt if there's any drag at all considering that the pulling action of the elastic band is linear compared to the action of the bow string which is angular.

  • @ryanlinscheid
    @ryanlinscheid Рік тому

    A drawstring of a bow is meant to be fired free air. The reason is when you shoot a bow underwater there is drag against the drawstring which causes both resistance and a vibration as it goes through the water it's a lot like taking your hand and trying to move it through the water really fast. Instead of it moving straight and easily your hand wants to move side to side against the current another way of looking at it drop a coin underwater instead of it falling straight down it will shift back and forth that is essentially what is happening now with the drawstring which slows your bow and creates less power with your arrow

    simple physics... the flexed arms of the bow got their own resistance... in the air, the drag on the arms is very low, because of the weak airresistance when they get back in their regular position. under water however, they need so much more power to do the same work... the water is so dense, that the bow arms have to be many times stronger (i do not now the exact factor) to get back in the regular position, than they need at land and only with air resistance. just for comparsion: 1l of water has 1000 times the weight of 1l of regular air, and therefore a comparable resistence when it comes to drag through it.
    (this is just a simple explanation of what is happening with the bow under water... i am sorry for my poor english, but im from germany)

    Well it's very interesting...what I would do is rebuild the bow find a way to put two rubber pieces at each end and the sting in the middle it just need some Force behind the arrow.or try a slim spare.

    I wonder if someone could develop an underwater bow…..I mean bow are designed the way they are to withstand the forces at play above water. I wonder with different came and higher draw weight I’m talking about like to the limits where a bow could explode itself above water if it would operate better under water with the increased drag without destroying itself.

    I tried Everglades Seasoning’s No MSG blend on chicken nuggets from Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen, and it made a world of difference in the taste! Unbelievable! I’m absolutely blown away!

    The water resists against the recurve of the bow, bow string, and cams, so the velocity is decreased. Thats why a spear gun has only back pressure and works better. I've tried with my old Bear wood, and metal cam bows. Both did not work well either.

    It's the pressure of the water that slows it down

    Its so amazing how deep you can dive without a tank. I dive down 15 feet and my head starts hurting. What do you do so the pressure doesn't hurt. Thank you Rob!!

      You have to equalize the pressure on your eardrums. As you make your decent, say at 10 feet, pinch your nostrils closed, close your mouth and blow gently to puff out your cheeks. Repeat as needed to relieve the pressure the deeper you go. It works on airplanes as well.

      Tony - A technique he is using is called a Valsalva Maneuver. A diver is able to pinch his nostrils and blow against the pressure to force air into his sinuses and Eustachian tubes [leading to the interior of the eardrums] to equalize the interior and exterior water pressures within and without the head. You can actually tell when he employs this technique in the video by the high pitch squeal.
      Watch the video starting at 01:30 when you see him reaching for his nose and then you'll hear the squeal it causes at several times during the video. Usually, only some divers need to do this when diving into the depths and not when surfacing. Pressures need to be properly managed when diving to mitigate possible injuries like torn eardrums, etc.

      @@tonytran3830 if you listen closely you can hear when he pinches his nose and blows, sorta like when you're driving up into the mountains and you feel your ears pop and if they don't pop it begins to build pressure in your sinuses(ears) and you pinch your nose and blow easy and they pop giving you relief. 👍👍

    fwiw, for spear guns i was taught that the effective kill distance was directly correlated to the length of the spear/arrow itself due to the drag coefficients of the water, so it would make sense in your video as to why when it was an arrows length away it worked for you with the compound bow

  • @Plumpplumberbalding

    The spear gun is shooting a steel spear. It was it weighs more and hits harder. The bow and arrow simply don't weigh enough to maintain enough energy to pierce the fish.

    Water slows everything down, string moving through water and even the wheels will move much slower before propelling the arrow. And remember fresh water is thinner and so the results should be a little better in fresh water.
