"As we sailed into the port, I looked up at the gray, wet, bleak building above me. It looks more like a prison than a port, but I guess most things do when the world is in shambles. As I pulled into the loading dock, I heard the bull sharks and piranhas gather in the water below to get some of the food that drops. Today we had an important shipment of canned fruit, penicillin, and thaulium, so we had to take the military gunboats, because of the pirates. The war made it so that there are weapons everywhere, and you have to know how to use them. Our clan is the most powerful in the city, or what's left of it, but that doesn't make us invincible. This is the appeal for me in a nutshell. Having a place carved out for you, humble but special nonetheless, where you can just exist in peace, despite the madness of the world outside.
Global warming had turned the former Arctic research station into a rusted remnant. The survivor's radio signal was coming from this facility and lights indicate they maintain some of the stations critical functions. I'm hesitant to walk up the rusted stairs, they look like they are about to collapse. But I didn't travel all this way to give up now. Here we go...
I’m imagining massive floating mega cities made of interconnected oil rigs anchored to each other and heavily anchored to the sea floor. Each rig is connected by walkway, with tall skyscrapers constructed on their decks. No longer serving their original purposes, these oil rigs become a new kind of city outside the jurisdiction of the government, an outlaw’s city where rules don’t apply, underhanded deeds hidden by the fog that floats between the decks.
"Why are the lights still on? I don't like this." "You won't like being torn to shreds either if you're still outside when the Mist comes. Get up the stairs." "You're full of it! There's nothing in the mist; it's just fog. And my shotgun says that anything that comes at me is only getting a mouthful of buckshot." I stopped, my free hand gripping the railing until my knuckles turned white; I fixed my furious gaze on the rookie. "I saw a six-man squad go into the Mist, armed to the teeth. Meanest sons of bitches you'd ever hope to meet. Next morning we found their guns and one severed hand- Dimitri Vastov; only recognized him because of his tattoos. Nobody had fired a damn shot. Now... GET. UP. THE STAIRS." With a doubtful expression, the rookie complied. "Fine. But I still don't like this." "That's smart. But I guarantee you that whatever might be in that building knows enough to stay out of the Mist, too."
