i guess when you take even just One away from this band , they will never be the same.. that's why most will always remember them with this Band "Number Girl" and not for the other bands they've split into.
@@numburger when i discovered this band, around the time you wrote this comment, i believed what the OP wrote. but now as a die hard fan, i can say that i seriously doubt he didn't like his voice to be heard. this guy was a demon and he fuckin knew. SGBB was meant by the band for it to be kinda lofi, hence why the vocals aren't up front in most of the tracks. even on vinyl rips you can't hear the kick drum right: the records just pops with noise all at once and you can't really isolate the kick drum while listening, as in 4 track professional (mad underrated track btw). this is to say that having vocals a bit back in the mix was a deliberate decision and certainly doesn't happen in all tracks (as in september girlfriend, 4 track professional, or the melancholic 我起立唯我一人 ). mukai's voice isn't overlooked, but doesn't get enough praise. HIS VOICE is THE BULK of the band's power: a hard hitting band without a voice that can match that aggressiveness is a big, big turnoff. mukai's vocal distortions in SGBB -identical in style to black francis' (and this is where the pixies influence really shows off)- are INSANE, they are the reason why OMOIDE is a legendary track. just listen to the demo version (actually a cassette single from 1996). in a year or less (SGBB was released in the japanese fall of 1997), this guy learned how to scream like a fuckin DEMON, and never ceased to do it until the band's breakup. SCHOOL GIRL BYE BYE is a dream come true. the slightly overdriven guitars with immense attack: telecaster twang with jazzmaster fat tone, the BIG thrashy rimshot snare sound, kentaro's CRAZY GROOVE and mukai's DEMON vocals!! right from the start they were incredibly skillful players. in OMOIDE it all comes together: much like sonic youth's teenage riot, this track goes on for like 7 minutes almost on ONE SINGLE RIFF. the suspense of the first minute. it feels like the biggest thing is gonna come down on you. this is the sound of youth. "on an empty train, the morning sun is dyed a daydream color!!" as a vocalist myself, mukai's vocal style is an enormous inspiration. i fuckin LOVE the guy and i fuckin LOVE the band. where would i be without this music?? NUMBER GIRL FOREVER!!
@@tintecobrizo I've always attributed why the vocals were so quiet on a majority of School Girl Bye Bye to two things that sort of work on tandem with each other: 1.) Mukai hadn't developed his style of singing yet 2.) School Girl Bye Bye wasn't made on a big budget One thing I've started to notice is that Mukai doesn't start *screaming* until about Ware Kiritsu Yuiga Hitori. There's of course September Girlfriend but I think of that more as the distortion doing the heavy lifting than Mukai himself; his style of singing is still more or less what it was on the prior tracks. You can even compare September Girlfriend and 4 track professional (I agree, amazing track, SUPER underrated) and you can tell on 4 track professional he's _actually_ screaming. I remember reading in a blog that once Eastern Youth started screaming on their songs, Mukai felt compelled to as well. That could've been a joke on the writer part tho but I can't really confirm or deny that. On songs from Atari Shock like Space Girl ~Acceleration Device~ you can literally hear his voice just kind of gets quiet as if he's running out of steam. The other thing is that SGBB wasn't made on a large budget. It was recorded and mixed by Studio Staff in Fukuoka. I can't find anything on them so they were most likely a local studio. My point with this is that they probably didn't have the equipment to turn up his vocals in post or some other reason that probably makes way more sense lol When you have the more calm style of singing Mukai adopted at the time paired with a lower mix, he just sounds really quiet and that _could_ be interpreted as him being a little embarrassed by his vocals. I honestly like that he doesn't scream or have a prominent voice for most of School Girl Bye Bye. His voice tends to act as a quiet voice gliding over the instrumental, with the best example being Ōatari no Kisetsu. It adds to that nostalgic vibe the album has. School Girl Bye Bye was made in the summer of 1997 and the lyrics and overall style of the music reflects that and the cheaper production even elevates it. For the most part it's pretty low-key and chill unlike Number Girl's later outings. It's that exact reason I was stuck on SGBB for so long
I don't like the fact the band members are so far apart from each other. I'm so used to them only being a few feet apart from one another that seeing them like 7 ft apart is so... off
