    "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!" How can any Top Ten not include at least one entry from the "Carry On" franchise? I must nominate "Carry on Cleo" for what is unversally recognised as the worst pun in cinematic history.

    • @Varksterable
      @Varksterable 5 місяців тому +2

      Not only any top ten - but 'Top 10 _British_ _Comedy_ Films'. To miss out on all of the many, many Carry On films is pretty much heresy. Cringe-worthy (i.e. early British) comedy, ludicrous yet somehow topical plots, loads of puns, lashes of innuendo and an absolutely iconic set of actors from the day.
      The only thought needed to put one of these on the list is to pick one; that's pretty hard - although I do agree that without watching them all again, "Carry on Cleo" is a firm contender.
      I'm guessing it's a typical MojoMumboJumbo list; probably sourced from somewhere else with little understanding of what it actually means. After all, nobody would expect them to research or have knowledge of _all_ British comedy films. There's simply too many great ones.
      "Withnail & I" certainly seems to divide opinions. Even from the little bits I've seen I know it's just not for me. It's a Marmite of a film. IMDB - 7.5. 'Nuff said.

    Ealing Comedies definitely worth watching at least once - Whisky Galore! (1949), Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), Possibly Passport to Pimlico but that might be a bit too British also (1949), The Lavender Hill Mob and as already mentioned The Man in The White Suit both (1951), The Ladykillers obviously on Mojo top 10 list (1955) - also worth considering two Ealing none comedy films - Went The Day Well? (1942) and Dead of Night (1945)

    There isn't a wedding going on at the same time as a funeral in Four Weddings although the funeral does follow on from one of them. The funeral has one of the most beautiful scenes in film with John Hannah's reading of W H Auden's Funeral Blues. Very much worth watching.

    Not only do you need to watch "Kind Hearts and Coronets" but also most of the other Ealing comedies. I discovered them in my twenties but back then I had to rely on tracking down VHS copies. Luckily I lived in London at the time so it wasn't too hard. Then when I moved back to my small Scottish hometown ten years later I found quite a few of them in the local library, free to rent. I'd lost the video tapes in a house fire so was very happy to rewatch and fall in love with them once again.
    Check them out online, you won't regret it!

    Withnail is a tragi-comedy really: it's very British in its sense of gloom as humour. I've also always thought it's more like a play than a film, with the way it uses words and dialogue. The way Bruce Robinson put those words together, though, is utter genius. It's one of those films that every time I watch it - and I've seen it many times - I notice something new and different. I love it so, so much. In fact I love all of the films on this list. Holy Grail definitely number 1.

    Withnail and I is an incredible film! It could just be TOO British for you. :) Richard E Grant is spectacular in it. Yes, he's theatrical. Quite deliberately so. He's a failing actor, full of self-importance and grandiose visions of the theatrical triumphs, that his spectacular talent deserves, all fueled by drink and drugs.. His Shakespearean monologue at the end is absolutely tragic, as you realise he really does have the talent but he's thrown it all away. A wonderful dark comedy, it won awards by the bucketload and has influenced filmakers all over the World! :)

Largely improvised by the cast, the tv play 'Abigail's Party' and tv comedy drama, 'Nuts in May' are both absolutely hilarious and have become cult classics! They're VERY British though, so be warned. The target audience was very much domestic. They're black comedies, so are almost painful to watch at times but beautifully so. They're also social satires. Just take my word for it, they're absolute classics and eminently quotable! :)

    Withnail is an odd bird I love it and think is up there with Brian & Holy Grail but my wife and many friends hate it. I'm sure someone else has said it's one of those comedies that needs to be seen a couple of times to get into the rhythm of the less obvious gags, which it is stuffed with. Certainly for anyone of my age (60) who was an undergraduate in the 1980s then scenes like the 'Kitchen' are funny because we lived in little more than slum flats and bedsits when at university. The other beauty of Withnail is how quotable it is, god knows how many times I've heard a student demanding 'the finest of wines' or back in the day friends misquoting Danny the dealer when rolling a 'Sunderland' rather than a Camberwell Carrot!'
    I also have to say I'm surprised Whiskey Galore (the original though the remake is pretty good) did not make the list because I'd put it the top five.

    As someone who grew up in the States but has lived in the UK for 30 years as an adult, I have never got "Withnail and I". I'm actually a huge Richard E. Grant fan, and all my British contemporaries adore it. I love most British comedy, but I don't find it funny at all - suspect it is one of those things that for some reason just doesn't translate for Americans. That being said, it is absolutely iconic as a British film and probably deserves its place here. But it's not for me.

    I would recommend anything with Alec Guinness, however, Kind Hearts and Coronets is a must watch. Don't be fooled by the dusty old appearance of it initially, as it is sublime. Your voice drips through the microphone like warm honey, that's my critique.

    Withnail And I is a strange one. Lots of people hate it first time round. Then they enjoy it the second time. Then they adore it the third time. Then they're quoting it on the fourth time. Then it's within your soul by the fifth. 😉
