You are one of the best UA-camr who is sharing his professional skills. I watched your all videos and gained alot of knowledge about signals and antennas. A Respectful Hi to you Andrew Mcneil. Its hard to make videos about technical stuff whose audience is not much. I appreciate your work.
Great videos Andrew. Not watch them all yet but would like to know if you have a video showing your view on the best antenna for the THREE network on 4G?
the metal element is probably capacitively coupled to the metal can and its distorting the near-field radiation and skewing its impedance as well, probably lowering it.
another idea; what about a choke on the end of the can; like what you did with the umbrella dish. and further, what if the choke wasnt just around the front edge but was instead a series of larger cans around the rear and sides of the smaller can?
Hi Andrew (and viewers!) What design is best for a directional 2.4ghz wifi antenna?. PCB Yagi, Yagi in a Can, Cantenna, Double Biquad Curve, Yagi Panel,?? If you had to pick one to get the best wifi signal from a router that is fixed, which would you build? I've watched a lot of your videos in the hope to make one, but i don't know which is the best right now. Sounds like Biquad antenna was your favourite for a while, but then cantennas keep popping up, and then finally the yagi panel type is listed as your favourite antenna? Do you have a comparison chart of all the antennas you have built?
They are all good but for different reasons: biquad easy to build even with mistakes in the measurements will still work well a double biquad has good long range over a wide area. Cantenna short can medium range long can longer range but narrow beamwidth. A short cantenna and a satellite dish super long range nothing will beat it only a bigger dish. Every antenna has its strengths and weaknesses and you cannot compare say a Yagi with a panel antenna or a cantenna. It just depends on what you want to use it for, what your objective is because in some situations a 2.5db dipole will outperform a 5db. hope this helps
@@andrewmcneil Thanks for the prompt response. Looks like "Long Can Cantenna" will be my first try as i will build two for both ends of the communication. I'll be trying to connect two houses together (my parents dont have any wifi and only live 150m as the crow flies away on the other side of a park and creek and a house in the way, although have a small corner of their roof as visual line of sight). The aim is to setup a repeater at their house (your hacked repeater TP link video was the first i watched). If i could stream a UA-cam video at their houseusing my internet connection that would be the ultimate goal. I already have all the access points/routers, most of which run DD-WRT, and one alfa 1000mw card, so the only cost would be the antennas (and maybe another alfa card for testing on the other end) Good hobby and glad you are making money from what you seem to love to do! keep it up!
Your videos have helped me alot so you've got one more subscriber! I live out in the sticks in Devon and I've neighbours asking too if I can extend their Wifi for them plus I've had to extend my own as well. I've just built the original cantenna using the monopole and the toilet brush can which luckily I already had to hand and it does work great so many thanks. I was wondering though how much better this yagi in a can is compared to the original monopole design?
If you designed the PCB with small connections (that would need to be ground off) you could use electrolysis to deposit pure copper onto the pcb instead of solder. If it makes a difference. *edit, on second thought, maybe not, as the elements would also grow sideways .. :/
Andrew, Andreas Spiess referred me to you for an opinion. I moved to the beach recently. I’d like to extend WiFi coverage approximately 250 feet to the beach . I do have direct LOS from second story of house to desired area of beach about 250 feet away. I’d like 5gig coverage for iPhone and laptops. I've read up on Long Range Access points that could transmit sufficient signal TO the beach. I've been cautioned to consider that the low power output of Iphone, laptop, Ipad, etc. may NOT be be able to reach back to the LR Access Point for reliable communication. In other words, the LR Access Point may be able to shout loudly, but not listen to whispers back. Do you have a recommendation for a possible solution for this Use Case? Is there an antenna design that might listen (receive gain) well enough for reliable comms? I realize there is an option to extend the AP closer to the beach via d buried cable/POE. I was hoping for a simpler solution. Please advise your recommendation.
Ive now build several of your cantennas, the normal ones without yagi and ive noticed an increase of signal strength. But im still not able to connect to a Wifi hotspot 200m away. ive have questions ... i really want to know wether its important what usb adapter i use ... you often use the alfa card, i used a csl usb adapter and few other wifi repeater i modified... im not satisfied with the range :( what could ive done wrong?
A cantenna or this I take my grandchildren on a caravan holiday every year, except this one, and I always pack a cantenna. Cartoons are a must when stuck in a metal box when it’s raining with a 3 and 4 year old lol. If a signal is much closer though I use a biquad.
? how works (1:1) this: ti(dot)com/lit/an/swra350/swra350.pdf and pcbway(dot)com/project/share/Yagi_Uda_PCB_Antenna.html and wa5vjb(dot)com/pcb-pdfs/Yagi2400.pdf (and 16 patch/radiating elements antennas (Delta DS 2400-21 or Wimo PA-13R-18) )
Is it possible to make a cantenna for 800Mhz (LTE ) ? On the internet I couldn’t find any information about anyone making cantenna below 2.4Ghz . I tried with 230mm diameter can using online calculator . But it didn’t work . Any information ?
Hi Andrew, may i ask a question. Out of all the antenna's youve created, whats the strongest antenna you have on offer to sell please? Thank you, all the best.
I am not sure that you read your comments, Andrew, as you rarely reply. May I respectfully make a couple of comments? I think you are trying to combine two different principles to the detriment of both and that a decent yagi or a decent can would perform better than the combination. You are STILL not testing your aerials properly. The only fair test is to hook up to a known distant router and do numerous speed tests for your different aerials. The number of wi fis you see is NOT the determining factor. In fact a highly directional and efficient aerial would see very few wi fis, unless they were all in a straight line geographically.
Mate you should really blur out those bssids, took me 5 minutes to pinpoint your location to an accuracy of about 50-20m, I really hope you don't have enemies..

awesome as always sir...you are the MASTER
Thanks Dimas
Thanks for this, both interesting and useful.
antennas are like glass lenses for lower frequencies.
Very nice project and explanation,
I try John but some people complain I talk to much lol
@@andrewmcneil Ignore them. They can mute it if they don't like it.
Great videos Andrew. Not watch them all yet but would like to know if you have a video showing your view on the best antenna for the THREE network on 4G?
I'd be interested to know how to determine beam width and how to measure gain if you would be so kind as to consider this for an upcoming video.
the metal element is probably capacitively coupled to the metal can and its distorting the near-field radiation and skewing its impedance as well, probably lowering it.
Hello Andrew ! Thanks for that good content ! Where do you buy your coaxial cable ? Locally or online ? How can you spot the good from the bad ?

Hi Andrew, nice video can do some 4g antenna?
Nice video! What would be the range of the longer yagi ?
I have found that any longer and it will start to drop but not sure why.

New subscriber here. Thanks for sharing cool stuff.
Hello where do you read for more information about antennas?
Would this work for me for a security camera about 100 metres away from the router? Thanks
If it's 2.4GHz then yes
Have you tried a helical in a cantenna?
would making them spin pick up more?
Can i connect both omni and directional antenna from one wifi card? or should i detach the omni first?
What difference is, if (right) antenna is (line w anothers elements) in/with elements PCB ang GND/reflector (left)antenna is in the small PCB ?

Im making one right now

Does the can give no benefit other than making thr Yagi more directional?
That's all it does but that is the benefit its like adding a focus lens to a light source
