I got my GMRS when I was studying for my ham. I have found it to be way better for local use then ham. GMRS is blowing up right now too. Throw in the fact that your entire family can use your callsign. So I did get my ham but have found GMRS to be much more active. I really only use ham for HF or nets now. Hf is great for an emergency but not to communicate across town. And we have repeaters too, just last week I was able to hit my home repeater from 131 miles away when the band opened up from 7-9:30am. In the middle of the woods. I am now the coolest radio dork in my GMRS club.
I had the Btech GMRS Pro and end up giving mine away. I'm not sure if I had a bad radio or what but it would make a sound when transmitting and receiving like someone was rubbing a finger on a wire brush. I also had some issues hitting some repeaters that are close to me.
The BTECH GMRS PRO is a nice radio. Very easy to program and operate. There are few things that I wish that this radio had. As for scanning other bands, such as railroad or Amateur radio. I do wish that it was able monitor DMR and NXDN, since railroads, such as Amtrak CSX and Nor Folk Southern will be switch to digital in a few years.

Gmrs was not difficult. Hard part is teaching your family about rules and call signs. It is doable.
