It's a Sunday so we are out paying our respect to the cycling gods... only problem is, it's blowing a gale out there. With wind gusts up to 51km/h it's no joke out there... but Alex decides to make things even more interesting, by running his 85mm deep section wheels. This is something you quite commonly will be told is a big no no... but we like to test out these old wives tales, so let's see how we get on... dangerous mix, or a lot of fun!?

Froome literallt ended his carreer because of a wind gust. This being said, you're better off with wind than with that relentless rain we've been getting in Portugal.
Oh yeah I’d much rather ride in wind that rain… plus once you get used to deep section in the wind it’s not really that bad I think.
Deep dish wheels are fast but I wouldn’t go past 40mm. I’ve almost been blown into a ditch from side gusts ....
I always ride 56mm all year round and I’ve never been blown off… and then I save the 85’s for special occasions!

I was blown 300 miles to York yesterday but back in December I was blown into a pothole so it's luck of the draw I guess

Yeah on the whole they are definitely better… some of the rural roads are quite beaten, but then others are like butter… 😁🙌

I have only been using 50mm rims for a year now and I still have issues in some of the wind here in Auckland, I can't even imagine what 80mm rims are like in heavy gusty wind. Alex is an animal.
You’ll get used to it I recon… practice makes perfect n all that! 🤙 but yeah 80’s are next level… definitely need good bike control!

Hi Thomas, Thomas here...i remember watching one of your videos where you explained that you use miles not km and. that all your stats will now be in miles, yet now you use km, im struggling to get used to km, what helped you change your mind back to km?
Because I moved to Portugal where they use km’s and the vast majority of the world uses km’s…
