Hi Andrew. Thank you for this wonderful story. I had the privilege of traveling on that road on numerous occasions back in 1974 through to 1979 as a teenager with my parents on our way to the Island Safari Lodge which was part owned by a family friend. My father on one occasion lent me his Mercedes 230 to do the trip as I had flown home from boarding school and was going to drive up and met them there. The Mercedes was a very well built vehicle and despite the atrocious condition of the road, got us safely there in record time. Youth has no fear! The only incident i recall was when some of the local cattle herders were herding their cattle in the road which caused me to have to veer of the centre line of the road and i immediately got stuck. Fortunately the herders were easily persuaded to help me back onto the road with some fresh water and a little biltong.
I really enjoy all the “ vintage” stories! But this might only be as I’m currently restoring my own RRC, and I’m loving it 😊 so these experiences give me a kind of reassurance and guidance. Can’t wait to see more of this interesting stories.
I don't even own a proper 4x4 but the wealth of knowledge you share and the adventures you have taken us on over the years has been very enjoyable. I loved the old footage you were able to include in this story.
Back in Nov' 1988 I hitchhiked from Nata to Maun on the very back of a flatbed truck, packed in with another traveller and lots of 'locals'. We hit a couple o thunderstorms along the way, it was agony on the back of his truck. By the time we got to Maun it was dark. When we finally got to see each other in the light we looked like a couple of snowmen, that calcrete dust had stuck to us after we were drenched in the storms.
Sounds like our old driveway in Pattersonville N.Y. Not a single soul would plow it in the winter for us. It ate everything...including my knees and elbows when I crashed my bike. The worst .25 miles in the area.
I have literally just driven this road in my 2018 navara, awesome road, and awesome description for people who may have not driven it. However it's tarr'ed now apart from a stretch near north of nata, about 50km out. Filled with potholes, near a lodge for camping called Elephant Sands. Gorgeous.
hi andrew, i have to say your archive footage is golden. it is great to see you in love with my country so much. let me spoil the trip for you, the francistown maun road has revived its notoriety again, the tarred road has fallen apart, they are still resurfacing it from maun. it has huge craters, and i lost two brand new michellins on it last month. it is called A3 at the moment, so be on the lookout.
Andrew, You expedition videos are absolutely amazing and I understand how long it takes to film and edit these. But surely story time can be done from the comfort of your own home and with all the years you have been travelling these exquisite and entertaining tales could be released much more often. Thank you Sir for another wonderful trip down memory lane...
I enjoy the stories of your beginnings and early days in the hobby so interesting and inspiring. So much technicality in the modern day that it sometimes overshadows the adventure a draw that pulls people into the hobby. I’m very much new in the overlanding world and the stories of your early and minimalist beginnings inspiring. Thanks for all the wonderful videos and motivation!
1:35 yes regular sedans are more capable than most people would think of when it comes to unsealed/offroad. About 10 years ago, I did my short trip from Sydney to Cameron Corner and back without a tyre puncture(without puncture resistant additive), single spare wheel, in a 2003 Lexus IS300 sedan, only other cars when I reached my destination were LC and Patrols only but I am sure some of them, if not all, planned to venture further.
Just found your channel and have been binge-watching it all day! You spoke in a previous episode about building an F150 in America. Might I suggest a trip for you? The Lake Superior Loop would be right up your alley. Michigan's Upper Peninsula is just an awesome overlanding experience, and Canada has a special treat: That Mexican Coke you like (real sugar). Also the area is full of Moose (which I have yet to find one!). The best time of year is the 2nd or 3rd week in October. Still warm enough to camp, no real snow, but the leaves are right at their peak color change. Just an idea. Keep up the good work!
Fantastic stories Andrew, You could Travel the world and have your own Live Tour, “An Evening with Andrew St Pierre White... Featuring “Intimate Stories from the Bush” Coming to a theatre near you, Lol. I’m sure myself and many of your followers would pay 💰 good money to watch that show. Anyway enough of that thanks for laughs, the baboons had me in tears of laughter. Cheers!
Hello Andrew I enjoy all your content you put together on your channel. The village your Dad drove the Rang Rover through was that in (England) Goudhurst Kent because I live 30 minute from there. Keep up the good videos 👍
Hi Andrew, really enjoy your video stories and adventures. But there is one concern of mine and that is about the chances of being attacked by lions or other wild animals when you are out of your vehicle. Can you elaborate on what is was like and did you have this fear ? Cheers Rob.
So I thought that calcrete sounded very similar to caliche which is used all over west texas and I'm sure else where, so I googled it and it is the same thing basically that's a pretty cool thought, also I'd love to go to Africa!!
Now for the most in-depth and important question you will be asked. What brand is your jumper? It’s brilliant. So is your channel by the way. Pls let me know where I can get this jumper from please..
Was anyone else shocked when Andrew pronounced zebra as Zee-bra instead of Zeb-ra? I thought we here in the US were the only ones who said it like that.

My father was a part of the project building Maun airport in the early 80's. It was great to be back and see how the area has developed.

Should get one, you won't regret it

So which came off worse the Landy or the Cruiser?
Please make a full review on New hilux
To put it in perspective, it would have been interesting to see what damage there was to the LandCruiser. Was it still drivable?
