SOTY/Thrasher just lost all its respect/authenticity from most of the skaters in this culture. Thrasher made it political by the skater who worked with them the most instead of the skater who skated the best, this year truly proved that. I think Tyshawn is a TREMENDOUS skater but Nyjah’s part is probably the best part I’ve ever seen my entire life, if you’re not a fan of his, there’s no denying he 100% deserved it, talking strictly skating (which the award is supposed to represent)

It's one person who did five or six tricks that not only extremely difficult and dangerous, ender worthy tricks. Vs a guy who dropped two full length enormous video parts not only nothing but enders, that if he fucked up or had a bad day would murder him. At the end of the day is this, no one could do what Nyjah did this year. But a lot of people could do what tyshawn did if they had a good year.
You wanna know the true way to objectively measure who deserved SOTY? Ask your self which skater could do the other persons tricks. Who ever could do most of the other persons tricks wins. Using that test, the winner in my mind is Nyjah.
That was never the case. It usually comes down to which part is better or who overall represents the year. That’s why people get mad every year. There no rules really. Same way I can say nyjah should have won in 2011 or Even though David Gonzales won SOTY in 2012, some people thought Guy Mariano should have won that year.

Great analysis. Tho I have to say I’ve always had issue with the time stamp argument. A great video part usually takes about 2 years (or more) to produce. So a lot of the footage being old is inevitable. But as long as it holds up by the time of its release, it should be recognized. Not to mention that Nyjah likely would have had more recent stuff but his injury put him out for the second half of this year. Also, Tyshawn legit said he was withholding footage from Godspeed (2020) for this year. So he’s actually guilty of the same thing

It’s not solely about trick difficulty but a whole bunch of subjective qualities that deny anyone the quality of “best” skater. I don’t like what both Nyjah and Tyshawn represent for skateboarding but Tyshawn said the quiet part out loud in that thrasher interview where he said he wanted skating to be more like boxing

You can't deny Nyjah's technical skill, but I'm totally fine with him not winning soty. I think his parts are just boring to watch. It's one rail trick after another, every spot he chose being a safe choice for a trick that is huge and technically difficult in execution but ultimately uninspired and cookie cutter. You don't get some creative approaches to spots or a sense of attacking some crusty shit as with T Funk or Tyshawn for example. When looking at soty as who best represented that thrasher style of skating the choice is obvious...
I'm not a fan of Nyjah at all, in fact I think he's one of the reasons I really disdain modern skate culture. Saying that, nothing gets people behind you like a good old fashioned robbery. SOTY has been kind of a joke the past few years any way. Its not even really about who skated the best that year. It's who strategically sat on their footage and put it out at the right time while also being a popularity contest. I would of liked to see Louie win cause to me he actually skated the best this year unlike some people who were hurt for 6 months but still went for soty any way lol.

Thrasher is literally "anyone but Nyjah" I think in a weird way, thrasher did the best thing for him. By so fucking unabashedly snubbing him. It's one person who did five or six tricks that not only extremely difficult and dangerous, ender worthy tricks. Vs a guy who dropped two full length enormous video parts not only nothing but enders, that if he fucked up or had a bad day would murder him. At the end of the day is this, no one could do what Nyjah did this year. But a lot of people could do what tyshawn did if they had a good year.

You wanna know the true way to objectively measure who deserved SOTY? Ask your self which skater could do the other persons tricks. Who ever could do most of the other persons tricks wins. Using that test, the winner in my mind is Nyjah.
That was never the case. It usually comes down to which part is better or who overall represents the year. That’s why people get mad every year. There no rules really. Same way I can say nyjah should have won in 2011 or Even though David Gonzales won SOTY in 2012, some people thought Guy Mariano should have won that year.

Great analysis. Tho I have to say I’ve always had issue with the time stamp argument. A great video part usually takes about 2 years (or more) to produce. So a lot of the footage being old is inevitable. But as long as it holds up by the time of its release, it should be recognized. Not to mention that Nyjah likely would have had more recent stuff but his injury put him out for the second half of this year.
Also, Tyshawn legit said he was withholding footage from Godspeed (2020) for this year. So he’s actually guilty of the same thing

It’s not solely about trick difficulty but a whole bunch of subjective qualities that deny anyone the quality of “best” skater. I don’t like what both Nyjah and Tyshawn represent for skateboarding but Tyshawn said the quiet part out loud in that thrasher interview where he said he wanted skating to be more like boxing

This seems to overlook quite a few factors. TJ had all of those ig clips that people were psyched on and also ollied a table long ways with Nuge on it. Nyjah doesnt even go to events like that one and is very outside of the skate community.

You can't deny Nyjah's technical skill, but I'm totally fine with him not winning soty. I think his parts are just boring to watch. It's one rail trick after another, every spot he chose being a safe choice for a trick that is huge and technically difficult in execution but ultimately uninspired and cookie cutter. You don't get some creative approaches to spots or a sense of attacking some crusty shit as with T Funk or Tyshawn for example.
When looking at soty as who best represented that thrasher style of skating the choice is obvious...
I'm not a fan of Nyjah at all, in fact I think he's one of the reasons I really disdain modern skate culture. Saying that, nothing gets people behind you like a good old fashioned robbery. Tyshawn didn't deserve his first SOTY, and he sure as hell doesn't deserve this one. Dude is a one trick pony at best.

SOTY has been kind of a joke the past few years any way. Its not even really about who skated the best that year. It's who strategically sat on their footage and put it out at the right time while also being a popularity contest. I would of liked to see Louie win cause to me he actually skated the best this year unlike some people who were hurt for 6 months but still went for soty any way lol.
