I find that hook you removed useful because you can hook it into the loop of the pot to form a rigid handle with the bail and allow you to pour boiling water from the pot without it rotating or splashing. The cut out in the shield is a smart idea though.
I happen to own a stainless steel version and two aluminium versions. I love the stoves so much that I ordered the pathfinder version and should receive it later this month. I'm probably going to retire my swedish military stoves. Your mods work extremely well! Thanks Blackie. Hope your back gets better real soon! Years of hard manual work takes it's toll on us old farts! I'll be 70 next month so I know what you're going through. Like Paul Newman said " Get old ain't for sissies " take care! ATB Sam Adler from Vietnam
Just got my Pathfinder Swedish mess kit. It's beautiful😍 Not a big fan of cleaning it in the field...ending with a clean pot is great. Another great video. More ideas for cooking and ending with a clean pot. 👍
I had a Wildo Foldacup XL size on a camping trip in Sweden a couple of years ago. I think Wildo AB is the new company name. The hinge split when I cleaned it in winter in a stream, I think some ice formed in the hinge and it failed. I emailed the company, didn't even have a receipt for it, and they mailed out an entire camping set of Wildo products including 3 new cups. Good customer service.
Great info! Right there with you my friend. Just spent 3wks running relief on a beer truck, at 56yrs old and 30yrs in. I'm so sore I can't tie my boots 🤣
I love the m40, I have one in stainless and another in aluminum. Blackie I know you have done a few m40 videos but if you ever get round to it I would love to see an m40 cooking series - making soup and stew, baking, making grits, bacon and eggs, etc. Might be a good idea as SRO are remaking them for a new generation of bushcrafters.
I'll second that ! I don't have the Swedish M40 but I recently picked up a MilTec aluminum version of the Bundswehr 3 piece mess kit. There's no "stove" but I've got a couple of those Esbit folding stoves and made a bush stove out of a coffee can
Hi Blackie, thankyou for your time to make this video. I just purchased a pathfinder s s m40 . With the alcohol, the pathfinder one you don't have to make the cut as the height of the stove and the circle grate that sits on top, use the wind shield to stabilise, also the canteen cup and stove and lid will fit into the pot and on top old place alcohol burner, pack away. Tight fit . Hope this will help.
Blackie , You get healed up first and take your time. Thanks for sharing, I think it's better than the old GI mess kit because you can't boil and bake in it. Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge and wisdom and passing on the craft. Yes You Are The Master Woodsman and Buschcrafter. Tim L.
made a double boiler type screen for my large pot the other day. used some of the bendable bbq screen material. just rolled up a section to about 1 inch by 1/2 inch by 4 inches. was heating those ready cooked pasta rice items (rice roni, uncle bens, brailla pasta). just dropping the bag into the boiling an resting on the bottom, had me thinking melted bag. so i wanted a spacer to keep the bag off the bottom.
I’ve had one of those stoves for nearly 40 years. I like the hack you show regarding the notch on the other side’s top rim. That hook thingy you removed is sort of a pain but I’ve been hoping to eventually learn from someone exactly all the uses it was designed for. I fumbled with mine long enough to figure out how to insert it through the tiny loop in the folding handle. I’m guessing that it is meant to keep the whole kit nested and rattle free. I’ve only learned of the “laying on the side” oven usage for various bush pots a few years ago. Dang!🤗 I found two similar stoves as this one but they are twice as big, heavier walled aluminum and they have a reinforced tube like thingy on one side. I didn’t know what the tubes were for until I learned what those folding d-rings are for. Using a stick for a handle extension.🤦♂️ I’m glad I didn’t grind them off to make em easier to pack. I didn’t know SRO has added this one in SS now but I’ll check em out. I don’t really NEED another stove at 70 but like knives, flashlights and ferro rods…can you really have too many?🤭Very informative Blackie, thanks a bunch.
If you hook the hook into the loop of the pot you can create a rigid handle with three points of contact that suspends the handle away from the pot at a 90 degree angle (thus keeping it away from the heat) and creates a rigid handle that allows you to pour the contents out of the pot with only one hand and without the handle rotating on it's axis. Kinda hard to explain but but you slide the hook eyelet into the off center notch, insert the hook through the loop and then slide the hooks eyelet back over to the center notch, with the eyelet in the center notch the hook will not be able come out of the loop. You will be able to turn the pot upside down and the contents of the pot won't splash the handle or your hand.
Seems two be two different methods to lock the handle which i'll give links too ua-cam.com/video/cewqYld6Nqc/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/uZs56l4CEQg/v-deo.html I don't like using links leading to other videos but it's kinda hard to explain otherwise
Envy, Envy! lol. Had major back surgery, so understand the pain. If the Doc has you on any rehab, do it,do it,do it! For me, the stretching was key to regaining mobility. And keeping my weight down, and strong abs. Might try a card table off camera, so you don't have to bend over. Stay well.
If I'm using a stove, the stereo folder works great with any fuel, except alcohol stoves that require the pot to seal the top. I use an old aluminum perk coffee pot as my water boiler with separate pot/cup for eating from.
Thanks Blackie. I have 2 aluminum stoves I bought when they were cheap, but never saw a stainless steel one for sale. I just pre-ordered the pathfinder stove. Look forward to receiving it.
Blacky.!! Please all those units were for a purpose. I love them. Those stoves had a function. I use them in dark dingy Scotland. Iove them. They are great, do
Love mine for bikepacking, might not be the smallest or lightest but the versatility is superb! Mine is actually an used one from the swedish military.
I would suggest that if you are going to store the burner itself inside the kit (and perhaps even the extra fuel bottle) then keep those items in a seal lock plastic bag just to make sure you don’t get fuel leaking and contaminating the pot.
Thanks for the comments. I have the Stainless original Swedish army versions. One never issued. The other used, also have 2 original aluminum versions, I guard them with my life. Good kit.
Thanks for letting me know the number and country of origin for this kit. I purchased the steel version while hunting in Finland and thought it was Finnish issue. Made a handle from a tree branch to fit through the rings on the handle and it worked just fine for around a campfire. Thanks again for your input and All the Best Mr. Thomas.
They have a purpose!! "don't knock it!! Iove my G. I. Mess kit system. It's a marvelous kit. I have it all. I love it. But in reality winter times this baby comes into reality.
Hi Blackie, I gave up trying to find one, and like you said, the only one I had found on ebay was outrageously expensive! I will have to get the Pathfinder M-40. Hope your back feels better soon. Thanks for the video. Take care.
Great video Blackie. Glad to hear your back is coming around unfortunately mine is not. Keep the faith we will win this battle. God bless and have a great day!
I would suggest a simple lid which fits the small pan. It will also fit the large pot, sits on the bottom of the windshield for transport and means that the small pan is more useful for heating food while the large pan is in use cooking something else. Instead of cutting a notch in the top of my windshield I cut mine all the way round to accommodate the small pan with the lid (it compensates for the weight of the lid, so it's a kind of win win).
This is unrelated, but I just came across a little farrow rod and fire starter that screws on to the cork screw of a Swiss Army knife. The brand name is "fire ant". I was sceptical at first, but the UA-cam video I saw it seemed pretty viable.
Get you some hemp cream for your back. I have arthritis and I use it on my shoulder, knees and lower back. I use Arvesa Hemp cream and I get it on Amazon. it is expensive but I have even given some to my neighbor who has Rheumatoid arthritis and it relieves her pain so that she can go to sleep at night without pain. I like this stove. I have some similar but without the windscreen. Bought it on Sportsman's guide.
👍 Excellent cook set. I have had a stainless version for 20 years. A bit on the heavy side, but I believe, as you do, it is one of the more versatile sets out there. Unfortunately supply & demand has driven the price up dramatically. The version sold by Self Reliance Outfitters seems like a cost effective alternative to one of the originals.
Love mine . Found a partial set at a flea market and finally found the missing parts online. I still see them occasionally around the $ 70 mark . Would like to get several more. Thanks for the tips . Have a great evening
Right on man!, I have been interested in purchasing a cookset just like this they used to be in my local surplus store and they had a huge rack full ,now I can't find one anywhere. online they are 50$to100$or more. The new Pathfinder version might be a good option, who knows maybe I will find one yet, great mods though and if I find that surplus piece I will mod it the Blackie way.
USGI MOLLE 200-rd "SAW" pouch is perfect for this stove. Available in multiple colors/camos, and the greyish USAF ABU units and the greyish Army UCP units can easily be dyed with common RIT dye. If desired, add 2 x 1" "D" rings to the PALS attachment straps on the back of the pouch and a shoulder strap.
Blackie, We can wait for this stuff until you get better brother. We appreciate you , but also want you to feel better for your family as well as us. Get better soon, brother.
I would still carry a canteen and cup set even if I had the cookset. So my question is will the canteen cup fit down in the stove. Do the handles of the canteen cup close enough to slide down far enough to rest on the wire stands in the stove? Other than that, this design is perfect. You really don't need much else to cook grub without carrying the kitchen sink.
If you position the cookset so the handle is facing into the wind, the flames don’t come out that hole. Similar to the Trangia 27-25s, with those, you face the vents into the wind.
Interesting! That is all your videos, but I especially like these surplus gear mods. You show a small alcohol stove as being useful and that it fits. Which other small stoves would fit? Also, how does the Pathfinder release compare to the surplus models? Take care!
QUESTION: would painting the burner (below the rolled rim) with BBQ paint help it bloom faster? And would the paint coating help prevent brass/aluminum contact corrosion?
the UCO combo is my go to eating utensil. Hands down best one I have used. You can stick one end into the other, to extend the fork part, for use in deep pots or pouches.
Really appreciate these tips. I've ordered one from SRO and will definitely be applying your tips. Thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge. It is appreciated.
Blackie one thing that can cause stoves to crack is incompatible metal cleaners, Mothers Polish is the only safe one. It is save on any brass stove that gets hot. I know other issues can cause cracking too. But the polish/metal cleaner is not a well known one.
If you make a fire in your windshield, it gets more and more malleable, until it becomes useless, that’s why yours has that copper colour on the inside (and the outside, under the paint). The metal is quite stiff originally. Unless you know you can get a replacement windshield, don’t use it for fires!
I have the old school US military gas camp stove. It hasn't been used sine Desert Storm. Needs to be repaired. You ever have the opportunity to use one. It was definitely a good stove when it was in use. Maybe u could do a review.
I noticed that you painted the bottom of the smaller pot. When you use it over something in the main pot steam will collect on the paint and drip into the main pot. Blackie, those mods are genius!! I’m probably gonna have to get the SRO version, because these things look so handy. Great video!!!

i will down the line bear has one and we spoke of doing a video his needs some repair before i trust it
Is it possible to use the windscreen as a improvised hobo to burn wood in?
Blackie you are probably aware of this. But you can put that fork and spoon set together backwards to get a much longer utensil if needed.
yes i have done that in deep pots before
Versatile kit. Hope you get to feeling better soon. Those back issues are very unpleasant.
thank you

That is not the m40. The m40 is stainless . The m44 is made of aluminium and was produced in 1944.
