    Funny this episode came on today, I do have my first car. 1970 Oldsmobile F85, and currently restoring it. It's got A/C and a V8 auto. Rare car, not as rare as the W31, but still rare.

    Posi, Traction Lock or limited slip does not do away with the spider gears. They are still there but spring force pushes the side gears apart against clutch packs. That has a tendency to cause both wheels to turn at the same rotational speed. Those clutches can slip given enough force, like cornering at more sedate speeds. There are specifications for different limited slip differential carriers to test the breakout force in lbft. This is measured with a torque wrench and one wheel on the ground and blocked, and the other in the air with the wheel removed to install a tool for the torque wrench.

    Posi: ties both the wheels together with a pinion. I'd love to hear your explanation of a torque converter.

    Funny how some people call the 350 Olds W-31 a small block, when the 455 Olds use the same engine block and heads. Drop an Olds 455 crank and rods into a 350 W-31 engine and you create a 455 torque monster.

    • @maddpeanut7524
      @maddpeanut7524 4 роки тому

      While true of Pontiacs, Olds used two different blocks. The 455 had a taller deck height (casting # 396021) versus the 350 ( casting # 381917 and 395558). A small block measures 12" between the heads at the manifold base, a big block 14".

    That was way too easy. You need to show us what to do if backlash is out of specs. Or, perhaps, what to do when tooth contact is not correct on the ring gear.
    Still, great video.
    Thanks for posting.✌️

    • @thetruth45ful
      @thetruth45ful 4 роки тому

      It’s honestly just adding and removing shims to get into spec. To much backlash you need to remove shims. Too little and add shims. It’s not a complicated process. Just take your time and measure more than once

  • @anthonym6078

    Nice car, but all that work to rebuild it and you put a 4l60 in it. I wouldn’t even waste my time with a 4l60e, especially with an LS7 in front of it, it’s basically guaranteed to be the first thing to break on that car. The 4l80 is better in basically every way, and it’s really not that much bigger than the 4l60, not sure why anyone bothers with the 60.

  • @MVP11489
    @MVP11489 4 роки тому

    Holy shit, you have no idea how a differential works do you? Power is sent to BOTH wheels on an open or positive differential at all times. Only difference is when one wheel slips, the position locks them together temporarily, the open will send all power to one wheel if either slips. But when driving normally, an open diff applies power to both wheels. Also, a posi unit DOES have spider gears! The hell you smoking? XD

    • @lemmy8947
      @lemmy8947 4 роки тому

      Open diffs are 50 split, but they equalize the torque, so if one wheel is getting little to no torque, then so is the other

      @FerasAlhawas 4 роки тому

      Lemmy how did he spin the wheel while the other wheel is not moving?

    • @maddpeanut7524
      @maddpeanut7524 4 роки тому +1

      @@FerasAlhawas That is a trait of an open diff. A limited slip will turn both of them if you try to hold one still, assuming you can apply enough torque.

    • @FerasAlhawas
      @FerasAlhawas 4 роки тому

      Madd Peanut oh , i though the open diff spins both wheels because the torque split, after doing researchthere is difference between whee torque and speed

    • @maddpeanut7524
      @maddpeanut7524 4 роки тому

      @@FerasAlhawas Yeah, an open diff will send torque to both wheels until one loses traction. That's what you are simulating by holding on wheel still. The wheel that loses traction then received all the torque, hence a one wheel burnout. Limited slips continue to supply torque to both wheels usually by means of springs and clutches.

      @maddpeanut7524 4 роки тому

      Charlie B What makes you say that? Both the S (Supreme) and W31 were option packages. You started by choosing the model Sports Coupe (in F-85, Cutlass S or 4-4-2 trims), hardtop fastback Holiday Coupe (Cutlass S and 4-4-2 only), and finally a more formal notchback Holiday Coupe, only offered in Cutlass Supreme trim then added options. The displayed portion of the sticker doesn't show over $600 worth of options included on the car and W31 only cost $368. The N10 dual exhaust was a mandatory option not included in the W31 price.
