The first Don was the more honest Don in a way, something to hide and mostly would only talk about his work that he was passionate about. The second Don was the full embodiment of the mask that he wears… he didn’t holster up his guns quite like he said and they didn’t have two floors. The second is not letting the truth get in a way of a good story.
I would say he did holster up his guns. From the moment that he learned they were being bought by McCann, he did everything he could think of to get out of it. The order of events is not how he described it (in fact it happened in Don's office, not Lane's) but it was all his idea.

He does take risks, but mostly self-destructive ones. If anything, the end segment shows how a man will change his story to fit the circumstances. At the start of the episode, he felt his work would do the talking. At the end, he realized he had to adopt the persona of a salesman - and act like he has always behaved that way.

Talking to someone from the press was always going to be risky.
By the end of the episode,
he has to let rip,
which could be construed as a kind of self-destructive move,
given that he doesn't want to draw attention to himself.
Talking to the press is also self-preservation,
given his line of work.

All risks have the potential to be self-destructive. That's why they are called risks. Thinking like that leads to not taking any.
Besides, he barely changed the story. It is essentially what happened, but without all the time they spend thinking about that - so skipping all the things every storyteller skips, because they are boring and unnecessary.
At this point, the Mad Men fanbase is like a little girl that has fallen in love but then was rejected. It has either a hard-on on criticizing every single thing Don did or acting like he was a holy and ideal man. Both approaches are equally foolish.
True but, I didn't trust that first interviewer; kinda had "competition-spy" persona/demeanor about him.
Kinda surprised wasn't written for Don to pick up same vibe on this guy....or, at least be more wary.
Same can't be said of second interviewer, unless of course, he's a dynamite con man in disguise.

But this is the perfect way to round off an episode... it shows that the episode has amounted to something, and in the classic Mad Men way of development with a lot thought and realism.
The first verse of Tobacco Road fits Don very well indeed.

Yeah, I know other versions of Tobacco Road (Jefferson Airplane, Burdon & War, Spooky Tooth) but I discovered all of them after I discovered Don Draper. Anyways, This song always made me think of Don, I envision Don as the protagonist of the story Tobacco Road puts into my head....
Also The Nashville Teens were one of many british groups that were heavily influenced by American Blues, most notably from Chess Records. However John D. Loudermilk did the "Original".

It's amazing that Don could talk to this Reporter and although he said was the "truth" a large part of his life was based on a "Lie".
Note what it says about our society and about its interpretation of Mad Men/Draper (not a negative observation; to the contrary, one I wholeheartedly admire) that the second scene in the video can be found on UA-cam by itself under the title, "Don Draper is a Badass."

Being from the 60-70’s sales/marketing era myself I have found MadMen not only entertaining, but rather almost a documentary of how business transpired. Those still in diapers during this period or perhaps not even born, think you understand Don, but you don’t even have a clue. Your comments are most revealing and entertaining. ROFLMBO

Mad Men was always made with newer generations in mind. There are lots of people out there who feel like Don. Acting like a different person every day because the world wouldn't accept them for who they truly are. Just because the world moved on, doesn't mean people have.

Like the first scene, of the first episode...these men are called "mad men", and they are ones who coined the phrase.
They didn't just control their narrative, they controlled their own nickname. Nicknaming is a human behavior where you make something your's by giving it a new name--or you belittle it by doing the same.
It was also called Mad Men because of (Mad) ison Avenue, where their offices were
Not everyone seems to get that he wasn't being a douche here, he had considered it logically and was basically doing it as a way to stand out as a salespitch for their firm. He's just doing an ad / his job.

@@ronoccc Keep in mind it was a "Cover" Version originally done by John Loudermilk in 1960. Alot of British Artists covered alot of obscure Blues Songs back in the day.

The thing that annoys me about the second scene is that, it's at the end of an episode, so you'd think Don would in the next few episodes become a risk taker, just to show some interesting character development. But in actual fact, nothing changes...
Of course he doesn't. People don't change; psychologist say that at 8 years old, a child's personality is pretty much set for life.

When you go to a school anniversary, do the people you haven't met for 5 years act, talk and behave the same way as back then or do they change up irrecognisably?
People grow up, find jobs, start a family, but unless something extraordinary happens, their core personalities don't change.
People stay being hard-working/lazy, happy/depressive, charismatic/lonesome, etc. whether they are 10 or 50 years old. That's all you + how you were brought up. That's why child-rearing is an incredibly important responsibility.

I don't understand who dislikes something like this. You actively have to seek and watch a clip from a well known tv show so you know what to expect. Why dislike it when its less effort not to watch it. In this situation a dislike achieves nothing, much like this comment.

Well he's probably had a few drinks he's more relaxed for the second interview also Sterling scolded him about the first article because he failed at self promotion and promotions are his business his self esteem was also suffering a little as Betty just filed for divorce and scolded him about lying to her for years. Depends how the reporter wants to convey him also arrogant or confident? The commercial he was complimented about was largely Peggys idea also that he accepts credit for because it was that sort of era.
The premise of the second question is by definition incorrect.

That doesn't make as good of a story. That's the whole point. If you're Don, you bend the truth to tell the best story you can.

Shorthand. Very few people of Don's caliber would know it today. People speak an average of 120-150 wpm, a good shorthand person can easily match that.

Which Don do you guys like the most? 1st or 2nd?
The 2nd seems cooler, more concise and a better salesman. The 1st however makes me think deeper about the show and what it's trying to tell us about what it is, it's letting us use our imagination more. It kinda reminds me of that transition from season 1-3 into 4-7 and how it "modernised" itself

Those are 'shorthand' symbols. It's a writing style that's fast so you can take down dictation on the fly.

Not very credible that a man who works in advertising doesn't know the importance of storytelling and promoting oneself. Great acting though
Don Draper is story himself, a man with a stolen identity. When people seek to probe deeper, his instinct is to parry for fear of giving away too much. The first interviewer was smart, disarming, incisive and it worried Don. Once the fallout from that poor interview reached back to the firm, he took a different approach and set up his own interview- one where he was ready to dictate the terms of the narrative.
This is how you handle any journalist/fake news/ANYTHING that comes at you from so-called journalism.
