They sent so many shots in this song. They used common lyrics from Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Thomas Rhett, Chris Young, and many more. This was a diss track to the majority of “bro country”.
Funny thing is Maddie and Tae have said after this song was released that it wasnt intended to be taken as literally as everyone did but that it was a satirical poke at how women are portrayed in music in general.
When they say "Conway and George Strait never did it this way" they're saying older country music wasn't nearly as disrespectful as some of the newer things that have come out. And I think the point of the role reversal was to make the viewers as uncomfortable as these girls are every day.
I don't think it was to make everyone uncomfortable, because they did it in a funny way. I think it was a light-hearted jab, not necessarily a statement piece
@ThatBigGuy824 Considering how many direct quotes from recent country hits that are in this song's lyrics - most of which are songs that are actually even more sexist than the single quote can illuminate - I don't think anyone can reduced this work of art into a "jab." Maybe a light-hearted dunk in the deep end, or perhaps a light-hearted slap with a fish. I'll even take jovial and non-aggressive "Jane, you ignorant slut." But I think minimizing it any further than that would be unjust to how brilliantly they lined up this particular pie-in-the-face. It was always going to make some people uncomfortable, just as it was going to make many people laugh. It did make some people laugh at how uncomfortable it made them - but I would bet you that the bulk of men's reactions to this video were ultimately exactly the same as that of @BillyYSC. They were shocked for 30 seconds, amused for several minutes, and when they thought about it for a moment they had to admit the song makes its point and makes it well. Edit: Ugh with the inexplicable carriage returns in the middle. Am I the only one whose WYSIWYG editor in YT is really fucking up at the WYG part in recent months?
At age 50, I remember a time when country music was about respecting the women. They had only a few female singers, but even then they were referred to as "Miss Dolly" or "Miss Loretta". Today there are several more top female country singers, but the "bro country" artists have a strong tendency of objectifying women in their songs. I hope were get to a point where we find a better balance.
@Michael Evans Country music today has a major problem with top female artists in general. According to a study done by USC ( assets.uscannenberg.org/docs/no-country-for-female-artists-research-brief_2019-04-04.pdf ), from 2014-2018, only 15% of the nominees in the top categories at the music awards shows and the top hot country Billboard chart were performed by women. The "bro country" culture is rooted pretty deep within the industry right now.
I just spit out my coffee at your reaction when they did the "role reversal!" LOL You're the cutest Billy! By the way, I LOVE, LOVE that you are now a country fan! We've been waitin' on ya!
To my mind, the men's distracting poses were part of the point. We consider it demeaning for men to act like women because we consider it a downgrade, because we respect men more than we do women. I'm not calling anyone a bad person - this is something that's been socially ingrained in us.
A man acting feminine is viewed the same as woman acting masculine. Neither of the groups likes seeing the other act like the opposite gender. Woman may say they like to be breadwinners but data shows they will not date below their earning level and will only look up. Men don't like masculine women because it makes them feel like their dating another man not a woman. As for a man seeing another man acting like a woman what that tells us is that he isn't able to defend himself or his family and isn't deserving of respect.
Your assumptions about men were heteronormative, and your assumptions about women were narrow-minded. Why would you assume that women who want well-earning husbands don't ALSO want to make a lot of money themselves? It actually makes more sense, in such an expensive world, for both adults to have established careers, in case one loses their job. And you forgot that gay men- who might prefer a more flamboyant male partner- exist. The world isn't nearly as black-and-white as you seem to think.
This was a hilarious reaction to watch - and you're right, they very much made their point! I like how you were pretty much on their side from the beginning - i tend to notice that that's a trend among fathers to daughters or guys with sisters. They understand the point, acknowledge it, agree with it. And yeah, pretty much a diss track. But unless you've heard some of the songs they're dissing, it can be hard to catch. But they really came from some of the male country artists and it was glorious.
Chip Whitley I’m sure they had fun doing it to like legitimately they look like they went all out some of the stuff they did in that video I guarantee you they thought up
Mikayla Chadduck the bigger guy was a friend of the director and had been asking to be in any music video just to be in one and this one was the one the director chose for him after he heard the song and got a video idea in mind
Your reaction was priceless!!! I felt the same way when I saw this video for the first time. They did make a statement and in a big way because they won a Grammy for this song.
Kind of a diss track 5:19 Is directed at Thomas Rhett and his song Get Me some of that. And "slide on over" was used in like every song back in the early part of last decade
You're right about them calling out other singers. They have quite a few references to other songs, like "Get Me Some of That" by Thomas Rhett, "Aw Naw" by Chris Young, and songs by Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, and more as well. If you'd like to watch another humorous video, I'd love for you to react to my most favorite song of all time, "Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox (If I Die)," by Joe Diffie. But be sure to watch the official video (ua-cam.com/video/vMiEFyTuuh8/v-deo.html) and watch all the way to the end! Joe Diffie made quite a few funny videos back in the day!
LOLOLOL i had to stop the video when you saw the " role reversal" sign and the 3 guys walking down the road. i got so tickled at your facial expression i laughed till i cried !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never seen you so speechless Billy, I'm LMAOing almost so hard I might cry. I'm also looking forward to your reaction to Die From A Broken Heart it's based on one of the girls breakups.
So many subtle shots at country musicians. That said, so glad to hear them back on the radio with 'Die From A Broken Heart', can't wait to hear you react to that.
This was fun to watch, made my day! I get the song and I agree, but when things took a turn and surprise, your reaction, I needed that laugh. This song is brilliant and true and funny and your reaction made it even better!!
I love this song. I have never actually seen the video before, thank you so much. And yes, yes this is absolutely a diss track, towards a number of singers in the "bro' country" movement.
Yes, I love this song! I am glad to see someone reacting to it! I loved your reaction to it and I suggest you take a listen to Kacey Musgraves' Follow Your Arrow, it's lots of fun.
They were not addressing anyone in particular but more the country music industry as a whole. This was their first hit. I'm really glad that you have finally gotten around to Maddie & Tae. They have a new album out with some good songs worth a listen.
Your face at "role reversal" - pricelss. Please, please, please watch Terri Clark's Girls Lie Too. You will get a kick out of it. Also, Aaron Tippin's Kiss This. Please.... You will enjoy them! 😁😉
The main diss I heard- well, that was a direct diss, not just about general "new" country- was the "tan-legged Juliet", which is a line from Jason Aldean's "My Kinda Party". Love this song, and the video is hilarious.
this song is aimed at "bro country" that includes Jason aldean and Luke Bryan ..the "bros" need lessons in respect and should listen to Conway Twitty George Strait and the older men who know how to treat women
Dude, your face when they did the role reversal switch ... I was dying laughing so hard. But yeah, they were coming at a lot of the current artists and their depiction of women in their songs, etc. Older Country music really was about respecting the lady, etc. Today....
Your Fav Carrie had them and Runaway June on tour with her last year and she would bring them back on stage to do a medley honoring the women of country every night. Everything from Patsy Cline to Shania.
This is a direct shot to the Modern Bro Country singers such as: Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, (Younger version of Chris Young), and the list goes on. This song is a call for a traditionalist country recall, which has been answered by Jon Pardi, Eric Church, Luke Combs, and Randall Scott. We still got a long way to go until we can get back to our roots though...

It is more a diss at the whole music industry no matter what genres the music are. This could also be rap as well.
I feel like mostly at Luke Bryan
Patrick Brown that “tan-legged Juliet” line was a direct jab at Jason.
@@amandaash476 and Brantley Gilbert, since he did that song first, and better. Just like all the songs of his that Aldean did.
When they say "Conway and George Strait never did it this way" they're saying older country music wasn't nearly as disrespectful as some of the newer things that have come out. And I think the point of the role reversal was to make the viewers as uncomfortable as these girls are every day.
It did not work for me, I thought that was the best part of the video
I don't think it was to make everyone uncomfortable, because they did it in a funny way. I think it was a light-hearted jab, not necessarily a statement piece
Emillia Ruiz exactly that's what I took from it too
When they released they said they were just having fun

Melissa Camacho I’ve been requesting this one too for awhile
It's such a great song. Hope he does it soon 🤞🏻
A little birdie told me he is lol
@@BillyYouSoCrazy You'll have to follow it up with Bathroom Floor! The music video for it backs off Die From a Broken Heart.

They don’t names but they are coming at modern country and how all the music videos just put girls in their videos for eye candy.
Reminds me if the musical genres that new country is trying to imitate.
I literally laughed out loud, that was the longest 20 second pause I have ever heard. The look on your face was priceless.

Amy Ware I wouldn’t even say it’s low key.

Some of the quotes they use in this song are directly at other songs/artists. Can’t think of all of them. But ‘tan legged Juliet” is definitely one.
The reversal switch gets flipped, and Billy instantly changed to the person he was making fun of
