  • I was able to travel to Iceland in July of 2022 to participate in the 200km gravel bike race, The Rift. I originally signed up for the event in 2020, but COVID 19 changed those plans, and I was able to defer until this year.
    The course is a lollipop shaped route that goes into some incredibly scenic terrain with multiple water crossings.
    After the midway checkpoint I came across Tom Gloag, an up and coming racer from Great Britain who had a flat tire and tried to help him out. His video from the race is here: • The Rift Iceland // To...
    We stayed at an AirBnB on a farm a few kms from the start line. The location was also a good central location for sightseeing after the race.
    My photo was on the home screen for The Rift website for 2023.

    A stunning video that captures the beauty of Iceland rarely seen. Hope your ride was as beautiful as the country. Thanks for posting this living art. The music was well chosen too as are the scenes changing to the beat of the music!

    I saw that Thomas glog so many times with flats. Not sure what tires they gave him but they were horrible. Great video.

      Probably Specialized, but he was actually given a rear wheel from another rider, which was very nice. I rode the Rene Herse 42 Hurricane Ridge Endurance Casing and didn't have any issues.

    I was there too!
    Near the wind turbines, I remember those terrible baby head stones at the northernmost part of the race... Even with suspension fork, it was bones shattering !
    I'm currently on a world tour with the same bike used for the Rift! Thanks for the video!

    Many with flat... All going with so risky tires or not tubless at all?

      I was running Rene Herse 700x42 Hurricane Ridge endurance casing and was fine. Just need to watch out fo big rocks.

    Proly the 10th time Im watching your vid. So amazing. One question. Do they give you map route to follow that you can download or road is marked? Im finally doing it this coming July. Thanks

      I actually forgot my GPS head unit, and used the RideWithGPS app on my phone, but the route was well marked and I didn't need the GPS file. I'd would have used it if I hadn't forgotten my GPS though.

    Newbie here! Did any of you change your socks after the water crossings? What jacket/rain gear do you recommend?

    • @brentsoderbergcycling
      @brentsoderbergcycling  Рік тому +1

      I did change socks. It was worth taking the time to get the sand and rocks out of your shoes. I packed a pair in my frame bag, but they do offer a drop bag service. I'd also recommend putting some gels or other race food you are used to in your drop bag. The stops varied on what was available. I had a Rapha brevet jersey that had wool. I just had a wind jacket, and wished I had something better after we hit some rain.

    In your estimation, what was the ideal tire width for that event.?

    Did you forget to install your head unit?

      @brentsoderbergcycling  Рік тому +1

      I took it out of my bag for one more ride before I flew to Iceland and forgot to repack it, so no head unit 😕

    Hi Brent - is there a way I can contact you? Just some questions!

    So is drafting against the rules like in triathlon?

    • @brentsoderbergcycling
      @brentsoderbergcycling  Рік тому

      No, but you are going so slow on most of the ride it doesn't matter, and the field just kind of breaks up on the hills.
