WHAS11 honors Walter Cronkite's last nightly broadcast

  • Walter Cronkite is probably the most well known name in journalism, seen daily on WHAS11 as the anchor of the CBS Evening News from 1962-1981.
    His last broadcast was 40 years ago this month. This is our report from March 6, 1981.

    I remember him.I was a kid growing up! Now I'm 53 yrs old yrs old the memories don't go away.😊

    WHAS used to be a CBS station. In 1990, WLKY and WHAS switched networks. I really liked Walter!

    Walter Cronkite didn't leave...he was pushed out by Dan Rather. Rather was an egomaniac and didn't want to wait to take over the CBS anchor chair. He threatened CBS executives that he would jump to another network if he didn't become the CBS anchor ASAP. When Rather took over he got rid of every last vestige of Cronkite's presence (including his anchor chair)
