It's a time and age i will never forget, i barely knew what music was, i was just a kid born in 1989, when nu metal started to be cool and playing everywhere between 1999 a 2005
Brings back the memories of American Pie, Scary Movie, Tony Hawlk, Pokemon Gameboy games, Nintendo 64, and ordering pizzas with my neighborhood friends.
Taproot fan email sent back here today in 2024 to see this video for the 1000th time. I bought this album brand new at Circuit City the week it came out and they had one of those promo setups where the CD was being sold with this video playing on loop on an old 2000s tv that wasn't flat screen haha.. Saw these guys on ozzfest multiple times and at the old Cotton Club and the old Masquerade in Atlanta, where the boys tore the house down.
Happy 20th anniversary to the “Gift” album! Also, happy 20th to White Pony, L.D.50, Hybrid Theory, 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage, The Height of Callousness, Spit (Kittie), and Violence (Nothingface)! Lots of nu metal - defining albums that turn 20.
Don’t forget about: The Greyest Of Blue Skies (Finger Eleven), An Education In Rebellion (The Union Underground), Statement (Nonpoint), Vapor Transmission (Orgy), Awake (Godsmack), Broke ((Hed) P.E.), Primitive (Soulfly), Introduction To Mayhem (Primer 55), Holy Wood (Marilyn Manson), Skull & Bones (Cypress Hill), The Deadlights’ self-titled, and Drawing Black Lines (Project 86).
And Full Devil Jacket’s self-titled, Deviant (Pitchshifter), Catalyst (The Blank Theory), Above (Pillar), Buy Now... Save Later (One Minute Silence), Inches From The Mainline (Slaves On Dope), Revenge of the Giant Robot (Chicosci), Progress (Ultraspank), Bullsized (Headplate), Sunshine (Liquid Gang), Our Time With You... (Relative Ash), Set It Off (Shuvel), Up Style Down (28 Days), Headtrip (Slapshock), Hallucinating (Apartment 26) and Loud Rocks.
People like that are elitist assholes usually. And I say that as someone who prefers more "pure metal" styles but still is a big fan of rock music like this among various other subgenres from the 70s to now.
I live in Australia. And no one knows either of them. Luckily my life is music, so I found both bands early. I have a taproot tattoo, and everyone asks what it means. And I got that 2005. Haha.
Just at 0:15 the sounds gets compressed and sounds lower in volume. This is just the way it used to happen on TV back in the day when the songs sounded harder like in this case.
Back in the days when music went hard. We need to bring this type of music back to popularity because today’s new stuff in the mainstream is pussified garbage.
David Knoll Actually, I don’t listen to the mainstream. I actually prefer the underground today because music by popular demand has taken a nose dive in quality and enjoyment.
I honestly loved how you had programs, music festivals, and music channels that promoted the crap out of not only this type of music, but other types as well. Like Farmclub, MTV X, TRL, Headbangers’ Ball, FuseTv, Warped Tour, Ozzfest, etc. I was a toddler when that stuff was on the air and popular, but man, we should all have things that are similar to this stuff again.
I like Taproot, but to claim that eighteen year old kids whining about everyday problems is somehow "hard" in a nasally voice is pretty fucking delusional.
Must admit, there isn't much nu-metal I am still into from my high school days. But this is timeless. Amazing mix, one of the most catchy choruses you'll ever hear, great vocal melodies. With this and Poem, I just can't believe Taproot never truly blew up. I think me and one other person were the only perople in my school who even knew who they were
Man, I LOVED Gift, but they started working with the AIC producer and subsequently sounded too much like them. I miss early Taproot, but love the later stuff. I feel this is why they didn't blow up.
I like the songs you mentioned best. It is sad that they ahd either too mich rap parts or went so random and pop/rock afterwards. The hooks are great they have in this and especially Poem
This album is really therapeutic. I assume Stephen is responsible for the lyrics and just want to say that I hope him and the band are well. This album dives deep into finding yourself and finding hope. Feelings of depression, anxiety, loneliness, toxic people. It’s great music but I think listening to the music and getting so hyped up we forget the story that’s being told. This album is truly a gift for anybody struggling, needing comfort. For me, a very relatable record. 1. Smile-Pretending to be happy when you’re not because you want to be. You’re trying to convince yourself. “Trying to create that contagious smile.” 2. Again and Again-Needing space after finding out your friends have talked bad about you behind your back. Trying to pull through and wanting things to go back to how they were. “Just need some time to myself again, need to bring back the old days when I was in control of my life, again and again.” It shows how we have a “friend” and we upset them and they show their true colors by talking crap and not accepting our apology. 3. Emotional Times-Similar theme to Smile (pretending to be fine). “I’m just fine.” Same with Again and Again (friendships falling apart). “Friendships turn to lies.” 4. Now-A significant other doesn’t feel he’s getting the same effort in the relationship and is torn apart. “I need to see your eyes on me.” 5. 1 Nite Stand-Making time for yourself and discovering something new about yourself. We all need to focus on ourselves because we always help others out and it drains us. “Lately, doubt and worries inflicted my mind.” “(I can) see my destiny is chasing me. I'm finally happy and ready to go.” 6. Believed-Being judged, lied to, and pressured. The song goes deep into how the person looks down on everybody. “Blaming evil upon another under that pedestal you hold yourself so high above us I can't imagine what it's like to not a give a shit about nothing.” The chorus states that we are outcasted for being individuals and this person wants us to be followers and follow them. This is most likely about a friend who tries to control you and manipulate your other friends to exclude you. He believed this person was his friend but they were just someone who wanted power and to turn his friends against him. 7. Mentobe-Conflict between making an adult decision and a childish decision. He talks a lot about hiding his true side and how he wants to recognize and see something. He can’t see it for what it is because the “little boy” is holding him back. It could be about a friend who did you wrong and you want to help. “This little boy proud of helping those in need.” He’s the little boy but now a grown man who can either help the person that hurt him and be hurt again or make an adult decision and realize you can’t let everybody walk back into your life. “But he's not me but just maybe he could be.” He isn’t a child anymore but doing what the child would do by seeing the good in someone who isn’t would make him that child again. “Tears a waterfall of acid cries from his eyes, I need to recognize its meant to be, oh no.” He realizes that he’s going to let his emotions get the best of him and allow himself to be taken advantage of. “It's somethin' with my pride, lies, I cannot hide my true side. His pride stops him from helping but his true side is the child who wants to make everybody happy. Am i hard to recognize? “What do i need to realize? Why can't I see with my own fucking eyes? What do I need to see?” He doesn’t know if he’s the child or adult anymore. 8. I-Not thinking your good enough to knowing you are. Sometimes he can’t see any qualities in himself because he made a mistake that ruined his friendships and families perception of him. I need forgiveness from the people I truly care about, I need support behind my back to help me spit it out, I'm gonna win, I can't afford to blow this one.” Whatever he did, it ruined his life and he’s beating himself up over it but wants to give himself a second chance. 9. Mirror’s Reflection-We are a mirror of those we judge. When we judge other’s, we don’t realize that what we make fun of them for and put them down for is stuff that we hate about ourselves. “Used me, but you don't want to know me, used me, but you don't know.” They sometimes manipulate us into thinking they like us but really couldn’t care less about our feelings or well being. Sometimes, I would give anything, just to be something more than nothing, something more than nothing.” We wish that we mattered to them. I had a friend who ended up becoming my worst enemy and ruined my life. 10. Dragged Down-Best song on the album! It’s about not having anybody to go to when you feel down so you go through it alone. The one person he tried to go to doesn’t care about his problems and he feels dragged down because he was abandoned by the person he trusted most. “I'm just a person like you, I’m just a fuck up that's true but your the only one I'll turn to by my side.” He’s telling that person that he puts all his trust in them. 11. Comeback-He needs his spiritual guides to come back to him. He’s going on a downward spiral of bad habits and is asking for help. “I need to say goodbye to these old ways stagnant lifestyle's no longer in my way, I gotta keep on movin'.” “So I pray, and wait for a sign from my guides.” 12. Impact-Making a good impact on people. “It's my gift, my intentions are only well.” 13. Day By Day-Trying to become a better person everyday but you always make a mistake by saying or doing something that turns people off. “I don't intend to create a pain in your heart, I'm a pain in the ass, ‘cause that's what I'm about.” The last song was impact but this song is impact vs intent. This song shows that even though his intentions we are good previously, this time the impact they had were negative. He tries to apologize but it’s not enough. “I'm on my way, I'm leaving for good, I pray that you forgive me for all the harm that I caused.” 10/10!
I just woke up with the chorus stuck in my head. I had to look up the lyrics. I can't believe I forgot about this song! I listened to Taproot almost every day in my teens and 20's.
I don't see anything dead about rock/metal though. Concerts being sold out and merch is almost sold out. Also some metal albums become nr.1 in country charts even in 2019 (that were also released in 2019) which is amazing after mtv cucked us. So show me where rock/metal is dead.
Just because it's not mainstream doesn't mean it's dead. You won't find the good shit on the radio you need to dig deeper. But someday it will come back in a big way.
After all these bands first albums (which were real shit) sold numbers and became lost in the mainstream and got watered down and fell off. Look at mudvayne ld50 album was the best. After that. Fucking trashing
this band ive always loved, never thought they got their just due. has a special connection for me with someone i grew up with that never had a chance with.
I actually had the pleasure of hanging out with Steve, the lead singer for about twenty to thirty minutes. Let me tell you guys, he’s one of the most laid back, nicest and most genuine guy I’ve ever met. These guys are still making music and still rocking it and are so under rated it’s not even funny. They deserve a lot more recognition.
Their last studio album was in 2014 but released a 200+ track compilation album in 2017. Stephen, the lead singer is currently working on new stuff (both solo and Taproot)
I just saw hed pe not too long ago here in Idaho, very small crowd but they had great sound. Kind of made me sad... Especially when I start hearing older bands changing to a pop sound just to be able to keep going in the music indistry
This kind of music was fading out in the early 00s when pop punk bands began dominating the charts. I can remember bands like The Used, Sum 41, Good Charlotte and Faded Glory heavily taking over MTV around 2002/2003. Taproot came back around 2005 with a new album, but the one or more singles released were more melodic and radio friendly. They had significantly changed up their formula to amount to what was topping the charts at that time. I think now they just perform their old songs live. Unfortunately the era in music today has paved the way for what lies ahead, and it doesn't touch rock in the slightest bit. So if you prefer the old style taproot then let UA-cam be your friend and stick to what you like.
Brixton Academy 2001, supporting Kid Rock, this band came on and the singer during one of the songs (again and again) passed through the crowd 3 times whilst singing and on the 3rd pass, direct line in the middle, grabbed me, his hand gripping mine and sang right into my face, head banging as he went. Awesome first time experience to see them live.
Anaheim House of Blues 2005(maybe6?), with Chevelle, Stephen went through the crowd there as well. We had been told multiple times no mosh pits because it's a smaller venue. He decided that didn't apply to him, and started one about 5 people behind me and my wife (then girlfriend). Awesome show.
This track was on a sample cd that was handed out at ozzfest one year. Kept checking my local music shop for the release of this album! I miss NuMetal. I’ll always be an angsty 16 year old at heart. ❤️
Just found this video the other day. Never seen it. I have seen them live at Planet Rock and Stephen was drenched after the show (you can see how intense he is, especially from 0:50 to 1:04) and I did get to meet him since it was a small venue. He gave me a hug and I ended up leaving right afterwards so I'm pretty sure I got sick from walking out in the snowy cold winter to wherever we parked at from being wet from enjoying the show and him hugging me before I left. Well worth it ♡ MI boys rep
@@theTaprooTube to be honest #AgainAnAgain was the very 1st #Taproot #Song i ever herd when they came out this #Song made me get into the deadly & wicked & awsome #RockMetalBand really. 🤘😎🤘
I wish i could go back to the old days when i was in control. I lost control and now my reputation is forever tarnished. Its something you can never get back.
Nearly twenty years on from when I first heard this masterpiece and I still come back to it when I am at my lowest. Picks me back up again, dusts me off and sends me back out into the world.
I have a photo from a concert at Columbia Halle Berlin where the guys are posing for this kodak photo. Back then, people wondered what kind of band it was. Me and the crew, we sang along with Taproot! Good vibes from Poland!
@@Amadeus_Eisenberg maybe it's because there's a reason why so many people shit on pop and rap today, it all sounds similar. There's no diversity in the music industry anymore.
Taproots music just fits the generation so well. The hivhs and lows in each song, harmonies and discords, hard and soft songs. Exactly like the generation they played for. Early model millinials raised by boomers watching then shaping the tech world.
Lead Singer Screamed in my face in Nashville at the Exit/In 2006 maybe? They were with Evans Blue. I remember Jamming it out in my own and look up me and lead singer start singing together, good times. Met the bassist playing in Jackson, Tn one time with Smile Empty Soul roughing it out on the road. Nice conversation's with both, lol. Thanks for the memories and good music my dudes!
heard this on kerrang TV here in the uk way back when in 99.... all these years later it is still one tune i go back to just to chill out and forget the ways of the world
Gift is one of the three albums in this world that makes me feel exactly how I felt the first time I listened to it: absolutely floored by crushing groove and lifted by the lyrics and flawless song composition every song on it is timeless I genuinely miss you guys
Lyrics:
Sick and angered by my friends extremely cold
Heartless talkin' shit behind my back about me
To my friends the source a jealous passion
Towards a spirit stuck in contention and feel
Just need some time to myself again
Need to bring back the old days
When I was in control of my life
Again and again
Just endangered with my friends extremely bold
Honest I'll be when it comes to me
I said I'm sorry
But you don't hear me
Just need some time to myself again
Need to bring back the old days
When I was in control of my life
Again and again
Just need some time to myself again
Need to bring back the old days
When I was in control of my life
Again and again
I tried to say that I was sorry to you
But you don't think I speak honestly
That okay 'cause I can move on now
I'm so sorry, no
Just need some time to myself again
Need to bring back the old days
When I was in control of my life
Again and again
Just need some time to myself again
Need to bring back the old days
When I was in control of my life

I absolutely agree. I saw them live and hung out with them. Nicest guys ever ❤
I agree
Is this song about Fred durst? Hahaha
Taproot is one of those bands who never got as big as they should have
They have a huge following in their hometown of Ann Arbor MI
Despite big bands wearing their merch and even issues with some bands brought forward with those bands.
Because they dont have big appeal.
Because mainstream media can't deal with or like hardcore music.
Maybe they would've with a different singer.
From Brazil PS1 4 ever
That chorus is so beautiful.
I fell in love with it when they sampled it in Welcome. When I found it I was hooked. Been listening to my MI Boys since before military school. They aged like fine wine ❤

“I need to say goodbye to these old ways stagnant lifestyle's no longer in my way, I gotta keep on movin'.” “So I pray, and wait for a sign from my guides.”
12. Impact-Making a good impact on people. “It's my gift, my intentions are only well.”
13. “I'm on my way, I'm leaving for good, I pray that you forgive me for all the harm that I caused.”

all I can say is what happened where did we go wrong will rock ever come back
BEAR WALKEN mumble rap started
I don't see anything dead about rock/metal though. Concerts being sold out and merch is almost sold out. Also some metal albums become nr.1 in country charts even in 2019 (that were also released in 2019) which is amazing after mtv cucked us.
So show me where rock/metal is dead.
@OligarchySlayer Kurt kobain is really overrated, let's be honest. After he died, the real stuff came in.
The addition of Stephen on Pushing me Away on LP’s reanimation album just makes that song so much better than the original.
This is a hit people of today don't know what they are missing
Need to bring back the old days - Taproot
First song I heard of Taproot. Hooked right away
Just rediscovered Poem after like 8 years. Happy their still making new shit
This is not new, they haven't made an album since 2014
Their last studio album was in 2014 but released a 200+ track compilation album in 2017. Stephen, the lead singer is currently working on new stuff (both solo and Taproot)
@Methods Yep Stay Away was a bonus track from Blue Sky Research (2005)
This isn’t new at all, 1999
@@misterparmi episodes is from 2012 not 2014
Listening to this to "bring back the old days"!
Why didn’t this band blow up huge? They had a great sound nobody else had, kinda like hed pe.....totally original
They almost did - saw them many many times in Denver.
Hed was the illest for real...
Their 2010 album is still one of my favorites. This band has so many great hits. I don’t understand why they never launched
This was always on Kerrang! back in the day, great memories
15 when this came out, use to ride the bmx at night cranking this song in the headphones.
need to bring back the old days
Saw him live in STL over 12 yrs ago...he walked in the crowd and I melted in my heals🔥🥵
2022 still rockin this. where is the acoustic version of this song!
Didnt hear this in years, sounds so refreshing, the way rock was meant to sound
This newest album is amazing, brings it back to exactly how it use to be like this. Amazing
Brings back the best of the late 90s/early 2000s!!
I still listen to this album, and the next, to this day in my car. These, and Drowning Pools first album. Forever.
This song is where im at in my rn. Again
Docklands arena 2001 with deftones and linkin Park! Both taproot and lp were just releasing their first albums.
Never gets old! Wish they would bring Nu Metal back! The good ole days of Metal music! 🤘
Proud to call Stephen a good friend! I love this band so much
This track was on a sample cd that was handed out at ozzfest one year. Kept checking my local music shop for the release of this album! I miss NuMetal. I’ll always be an angsty 16 year old at heart. ❤️
Macho ma'am tyranny savage!!
Im playing this song...Again and Again...
2019 and still rocking Taproot. Stephen was so incredibly hot in this video. So wanted a piece back then haha!
As a straight Male, I'd be lying if I said I didn't get why
This song gets you through any dark shit in your life.
Honestly, it always complements your life, no matter what state you're in.
Do i??? Urrrr???
Just found this video the other day. Never seen it. I have seen them live at Planet Rock and Stephen was drenched after the show (you can see how intense he is, especially from 0:50 to 1:04) and I did get to meet him since it was a small venue. He gave me a hug and I ended up leaving right afterwards so I'm pretty sure I got sick from walking out in the snowy cold winter to wherever we parked at from being wet from enjoying the show and him hugging me before I left. Well worth it ♡ MI boys rep
After 22 years still good. Remember forever.
Extraño esos dias que hiba a la escuela en skate escuchando este disco GIFT
Sitting in my t top z28 enjoying getting back to the old days I miss taproot they are an awesome band
Back in high school days, this was on my discman 24/7
Man, I was BLASTING this in my Camaro when I was 18 in 2000. Good times. 🤘
Wow, I can’t believe how much I used to listen to this album “Gift”. I gave up on Taproot after the ”Long Road” album but I still love this one.
You should listen to the "Plead the fifth" (2010) :-)))
@@theTaprooTube
I've had that one recommended to me before so I'll have to give it a listen. Thanks!
@@theTaprooTube to be honest #AgainAnAgain was the very 1st #Taproot #Song i ever herd when they came out this #Song made me get into the deadly & wicked & awsome #RockMetalBand really. 🤘😎🤘
Whole album was bangers front to back!
I wish i could go back to the old days when i was in control. I lost control and now my reputation is forever tarnished. Its something you can never get back.
The best album!
The Best Post-grunge album
Nearly twenty years on from when I first heard this masterpiece and I still come back to it when I am at my lowest. Picks me back up again, dusts me off and sends me back out into the world.
I have a photo from a concert at Columbia Halle Berlin where the guys are posing for this kodak photo. Back then, people wondered what kind of band it was.
Me and the crew, we sang along with Taproot!
Good vibes from Poland!
Bring back the NU METAL
That's probably not going to happen, because so many people shit on it too much.
+The Licensed Gamer
Lots of people shit on pop and rap too, what's your point lol
@@Amadeus_Eisenberg maybe it's because there's a reason why so many people shit on pop and rap today, it all sounds similar. There's no diversity in the music industry anymore.
ua-cam.com/video/OBU-96x09pw/v-deo.html
The last nu metal/ Alternative metal act was in mid and late 2000's TFK, Skillet, Red and Breaking Benjamin saved it.
I can't stop imagining Layne STaley singing along ,,,, harmonizing this song ,,,,weird awesome illusion
Truth above all, we should seek time alone then and now to find peace in understanding.
Man I actually saw these guys. I'm going to say it was with Ill Nino.....like 20 years ago. Good stuff!
Just seen em last year in GR Michigan , totally worth the 10 hour drive from MD hahah good times
heard this on kerrang TV here in the uk way back when in 99.... all these years later it is still one tune i go back to just to chill out and forget the ways of the world
Wow these guys haven’t aged! One of my favorite bands!!
Love you guys greetings from Egypt
Great band ...I consumed this record at the time of high school thanks for beautiful music..greeting from Italy.
If there is any era I'd like to go back to it be when music was good and full of emotions I miss this feeling now only music can bring it back
Goddd he was so cute !!
Wow I remember listening to this on my cd player and sharing headphones with a young lady
This type of song is what comes to my mind when I think about music of the end of 90’s, beginning of 2000’s👌🏻
Best album in 2000! ❤
Glad to see these guys back at it and doing music again
I feel so lucky to have seen them at the start back in 2001 in Houston🤘
Again and again
Rocked this on the way to Wilmington ENDLESS TIMES!
This song. Describes my tennager life. And it is the nu metal on it s prime !
One of the better nu-metal acts, for sure. Always dug the drums for this song too.
I found this cd Back in high school 😮 It hits different. ❤
Heard this song almost 20 years ago on those H bomb atv movies🔥 finally found it. I can't wait for the gym tomorrow 🤣💪🏽❤️🔥
Gift is one of the three albums in this world that makes me feel exactly how I felt the first time I listened to it: absolutely floored by crushing groove and lifted by the lyrics and flawless song composition
every song on it is timeless
I genuinely miss you guys
Good news, new album comes out in September!
i saw them wit the deftones and incubus tears ago great fuckin show
So very happy this was brought back . Thanks ❤ Amber Douglas
I had this album in my disc player all the time when I was 18
