Yeah, she took advantage of him but the song is also about the realisation that you can't buy love. "And now I'm just another who got hurt doing Annabelle's homework" is a metaphor for that, and the girl didn't actually have some kind of twisted system for getting guys to do her homework.

The meaning of the song, “If I Killed Someone For You” is saying that some people would change themselves for that one person and later on the person doesn’t recognize you anymore, because you change yourself so much that she/he couldn’t recognize you anymore, and you don’t even recognize yourself

Steve isnt really an obvious concept. A lot of people think it's explicitly an Adam & Steve kind of thing, but I dont think it is because Eve is also mentioned as someone who helps Adam. At no point is it implied that there is any romance at all between anyone, so I dont think romantic relationships are the focus.
I think it's more an anthem for everyone. Homophobes say the "Adam and Eve. Not Adam and Steve." and this song is coming back to say, "But what if Steve was there?" a third person with a different perspective on life to advise Adam. There was room in Eden for all of them. Just like there is room in the world for all different types of people and we all bring different experiences to the table that could help one another.

i honestly think his lyrics are meant to mean a lot of different. it's that simple, but super complicated at the same time. it's super simple so it can interpreted in many complicated ways. and i think it differs from person to person. i definitely think he meant that the whole gay aspect of the song can apply to some people.

ITS BECAUSE HIS SONGS TELL A STORY. That’s why I love his verses. He does a better job at storytelling through music then some musicals. Something I try with my music, some success some failure, but all my favorite artists have at least 3 songs that focus on some kind of story, not just a general message

*water fountain* - found annabelle by the water fountain and began their on and off relationship
*annabelle’s homework* - continued his toxic relationship with annabelle even though she was seeing others too, but dealing with her baggage (or homework) but after being broken up, she immediately moved on
*let me down slowly* - came back to annabelle and continued their relationship but eventually broke up and was never really connected
*swim* - met annabelle again and realized that he never stopped loving her, but she doesn’t want any strings and just wants ‘him’ but he’s determined to make her love him
*boy in the bubble* - got involved with shady things because of annabelle, yet he understood the pain since he was living through it so he sympathized with everyone
*steve* - slowly realized that he felt a little ~gay~ when he met a guy but still loves annabelle
*gotta be a reason* - broke up with annabelle for the “last time” but she called him worthless and began to break down since he lost all his friends due to his shady business
*out running karma* - all of the business he did with annabelle has finally caught up with him a) his parent found out what he did b) he went in dept c) annabelle keeps showing up in places she is and isn’t
*if i killed someone for you* - annabelle has pulled him into another toxic relationship and he can’t help but spiral, slowly seeing her hatred rub off on him he feels extreme emotions he hasn’t felt before. and then finally, too late, he realized he lost himself for you.
*the death of a hero* - looked in the mirror as he did it and saw his life how it was before he met annabelle and got involved with everything.
*1994* - trying to redeem himself by going to rehab and finally telling everyone what he’s been through: ODs, toxic relationships, losing friends, etc. before realizing that he’s worth so much more.
Should we thank Annabelle for making Alec who he is now?
