Mossad or Mossad Merkazi le-Modiin ule-Tafkidim Meyuhadim is one of Israel's three main intelligence agencies. Apart from Mossad, Israel also has Aman (military intelligence) and Shin Bet (domestic security). Mossad is responsible for foreign intelligence gathering, intelligence analysis, and carrying out covert operations.
Mossad was founded in December 1949 under the name Institute for Coordination. Mossad is the successor of the Haganah intelligence division which was the Jewish military force in Palestine thanks to the British mandate.
Mossad was officially founded in April 1951 and Reuven Shiloah was appointed as its first director at that time. Shiloah was previously involved in special operations and covert diplomacy before the creation of the state of Israel. Shiloah then retired in 1952 and was replaced by Isser Harel, who had previously led the Shin Bet.
While leading Mossad for 11 years, from 1952 to 1963 to be precise, Harel was recognized as having an important role in developing Mossad. The Israeli Intelligence Agency then transformed into a very professional organization capable of carrying out operations throughout the world
