I wonder if the fact that such a small vfx crew did such amazing effects (and won the oscar for it), will influence the hollywood studios to pressure vfx studios to lower costs going forward.

Best movie if 2023! Watched twice on cinema. Its kind a remake of the original, based on real historical facts(the american terrorist attack in Tokyo), its touching with great vfx. As a half japanese its the first time I felt what was to be a civilian in Japan post war...i cried a lot both times.

I guess I have to agree to disagree with Hugo about the films editing, pacing and human element. I thought they were superb. The fact that one person wrote directed and supervised the effects on this film Is amazing ! However, I really like this video. This is the first I’ve seen of the channel and I plan to watch many more! Thanks for making cool videos about visual effects.

Fantastic! I really enjoyed The Creator. I thought Gareth Edwards, Monsters was a revelation. He really was a one-man band on that film. The way he used documentary style filmmaking with visual effect was so cool and The Creator built on that. I have enjoyed Gareth Edwards franchise stuff, but I really prefer when he makes original stories, but we get less of those these days. I look forward to watching more of your episodes. Once again, thanks for making them. I’m a big fan of this kind of stuff!

It is a budget issue. Mostly Japanese movie and other visual contents target Japanese market which is smaller than US market. In fact this Godzilla was planned for a limited number of theaters and 2weeks run in US.

    • @MarcMcKenzie-qb6or
      @MarcMcKenzie-qb6or 5 місяців тому

Yep. MINUS ONE really was supposed to be only two weeks in the US, but Toho extended the run because of the very positive reaction to the film, which probably caught them off guard.

Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels is one of my favorite films way before it made the #1 position in the Sight&Sound list of the greatest films ever made...and noticed G-1.0 gave it a nod...I enjoyed the kabuki theater approach style of acting and the cultural significance of the was from Japan's controversial POV...this film accomplished things most studios would consider taboo...the vfx is so subtle in most shots that one doesn't even notice it...watch it again and re-evaluate your perspective please.

I would love an episode of the recent Planet of the Apes (Rise, Dawn and War). I watched them again a while back and they're really great. The first one looked very impressive but you could see all the progress in technology in the two sequels. There are shots in War of the Planet of the Apes that during my first watch I thought: I know this is not a real ape, but what I see feels 100% real. Would love to hear your guys opinions about it!

If you want to see a fantastic recreated version of the Trinity explosion, I highly recommend episode 8 of Twin Peaks season 3. Perhaps not the best VFX in the world, but framed and presented so starkly and terrifyingly.
Also: I've been wanting to watch Godzilla Minus One for a while, and this breakdown of the breakdown has me hyped to finally bite the bullet. Thanks!

Oh yes, I love that episode of Twin Peaks, that exploding is stunning from a creative point of view.

I am glad that MINUS ONE won the Oscar for Best VFX--but no, I am not going to use that to bash Hollywood, because frankly, I found that to be stupid.
I also found it interesting to see that there was a lot of greenscreen/compositing used in MINUS ONE...but the anti-CGI folks were pretty quiet about that.

I just recently discovered your podcast! I'm not in the industry, but I'm really interested in the whole process of filmmaking, so I really like to listen to you guys!
The VFX breakdown of Godzilla was really fascinating, because there was even less that was real than I expected! they didn't even have a full airplane model for that final plane!
just wondering: did you guys see The Wandering Earth 2? It's obvious to me that a chinese sci-fi movie would not be recognised by the oscars, but that one is a movie in which the scale and the quality of the vfx really amazed me (and i found the story also quite intriguing). There is also some good vfx breakdowns of it here on youtube :)

@@HugosDesk you're welcome! and awesome! :D Long list is very understandable, as there is almost no movie without vfx these days!

It is the first Godzilla movie that I watched, and I didn't really appreciate it, but I also didn't dislike it. I think that this film is enhanced by its comparison to the other Godzilla movies and by the fact that many people are not used to watching Asian movies, which is refreshing. But by itself, it is just an 'okay' movie to me :/
Nevertheless, I can't deny the amount of work done with such a little budget and crew. Bravo!

The guy on the left doesn't know what he's talking about. The original Godzilla movie (1954) was a direct reaction to the dropping of 2 atomic bombs on 2 cities in Japan, ending the war in the Pacific. This version of Godzilla returns to telling that story. For decades I've been complaining about the ridiculous Godzilla movies that came out after the original. Those that came out after the original were like the difference between the TV series Lost In Space, which started out as a serious sci-fi tv show, shot in black and white, to a clownish piece of shit joke, shot in color. A movie about Godzilla fighting a big butterfly? Come on. a Godzilla movie with a joke of a son? Give me a break. For years Toho, who did most of the Japanese versions, including the original (with the exception of the original) were getting it wrong. The American versions were another kind of bad joke. And the ultimate insult...This masterpiece has been taken out of the theaters, at least in the United States, to make room a another fucked up King Kong versus movie. Godzilla and King Kong as Marvel superheroes running together. Until Gozilla Minus One, no one has been getting it right. Kudos to Toho for returning to what Godzilla really was...a straight-out scary thundering beast.

Hi, I’m the guy on the left! My name is Hugo Guerra. As mentioned on the podcast, I love the original film and even have a criterion edition of the film. As I also mentioned on the podcast this is a great Godzilla movie, and you are right, it’s a true return to form after a lot of very forgettable movies. Anyway thanks for watching the podcast.

Looks like everyone blind about how many bad vfx in this movie, especially water (tons of lowres and bad motion) or animation, nothing will be approved in a western production, just come on, stop hyping for a second.
Budget is not an excuse, many eastern Europe companies with same or even less team/budget did top level shots in movies but no one noticed that with same hype.
I just don't get it, we do hours overtime and pixelF to make remarkable shot but what I see - audience loves to praise mediocre, no surprise that AI will replace us very soon even with a current poor quality.
