How important is it to get your opponent's knee to the ground? I have had success with this against lighter opponents but as much against the bigger guys. Thanks!

Very! You can use the "shin to shin" type hook to get their knee to the floor. Otherwise, you may need to move to another attack or back towards the guard.

Hey Maxwell! By far the most used version from 1/2 guard comes when you have an underhook and your opponent makes an overhook. In this case, you pin your elbow to your own rib cage and this traps your opponents arm (as shown in the first part of the video! Tussa (the gentleman who is using the technique) is simple controlling the sleeve of his opponent's right arm in both cases to prevent a posting counter. There are several versions of the sweep, and as long as you 1. control the posting arm, 2. most of the time are on your side (but don't need to be from 1/2 guard), and 3. have a solid "crowbar" you can have success... assuming you catch your opponent with his weight neutrally placed on both knees. I only called it the John Wayne because it looks like those old western movie fight scenes. It seems that when they hit the ground, they just roll around from bottom to top. haha. However, this move actually works awesome :). Glad you like it.
