It is very very clean............... Don't touch anybody with your left hand! Well that makes a lot of sense.
Thank you for showing Westerners a topic that is... sensitive to many Westerners!!! There should be no embarrassment, and we thank the commentator/presentator for his tasteful and complete description of "essential knowledge" for any Westerner visiting areas of Asia other than the "big cities" which usually have western conveniences! Great presentation of a sensitive topic!!! The presenter did a better job explaining than any Western person I know!
I actually held my breath while watching this video.
"aim for the hole"
epic :):)
Its a priceless moment seeing a foreigner running to the bathroom from eating spicy food just to find out there is just a bucket and a mug with no tissue without an instruction manual. What would one do then? :)
I just love the TERMINOLOGIES.
I love how he keeps saying "very very clean". >.
"You never shake hands with the left hand or touch things very much with the left hand"
*presses hands together*
This was very interesting to me. I was only 19 when I was in the Air Force and I was stationed in Kuwait. I was told not to shake hands with the left hand but never knew why. Now I know.
Don't skip out on leg days at the gym. You better know how to squat otherwise you'll fall into a whole of your makings.
I can't imagine how this would work for a frail, elderly person. Or worse, how would an amputee manage?
first and foremost, how did i get here.
Im never taking toilet paper for granted again.
"Do not just use the hand without the water. That is inappropriate" OMG, LMFAO!
I nearly had a heart-attack from laughing so hard while watching this. This is epic!
the terminology part is GOING to be my ringtone :D
"Do not just use the hand without the water"
No shit Sherlock!
Good thing he told me to take my pants off, I would never have known to do that!
What do i take away from this video? Never touch a persons left hand when in India. If they only have a right hand, run sway.
Most informative piece of video I've seen in years!
You don't greet with the left hand but when you namaste you put both hands together, so what does it matter after that?
Dear Sargunaraj
I came here by chance and could't control my laughter for your sense of humor. I live in France and I know how much difficult for me with tissue and I avoid using public toilets as much as possible. I prefer to do my business at my home and then take a bath afterwards. This is very essential especially next day after having very spicy dish.
Keep posting and sharing your sense of humor.
Regards
Anand
I LOVE his accent, HAHAHA
You must Vash Vith Vater!!
Good tip, i'll remember to lock the door now
I just love how indian people speak english. I like the way it sounds.
I like your confidence :) First class experience!!
I didnt know if he is being serious or making fun but definitely educational for all westerners out there
"FIRS CLASS EXPERIENCE" xD
I thought I would like to visit India.
Then I saw this.
How do you not have wet pants after? You've washed but then you are wet. Is it normal to walk around with wet pants?
VERYVERYCLEAN!
yeah right.
Thank goodness. I'd been wondering for several years how to use a latrine. Your directions would have never crossed my mind.
Thank you.
Think of the water you save, no flushing.
I can't speak for everyone here in Australia, but in our household we use toilet paper for, err, number ones, & baby wipes for number twos & feminine hygiene. I agree that toilet paper is not an efficient method for cleaning after number twos; it would be like having a bath by rubbing a dry towel over your body. Sorry - I'm trying to be as PC as possible!
It is one of the most difficult subject to handle. No one can do it this good but you sir!! It is so natural and watchable :)
Clean method, of course. Welcome to civilization.
This video is pure gold. And i agree that it is cleaner to wash.
The problem is that everyone thinks Wilbur is trying to entertain/make fun through these videos. You couldn't be farther from the truth. Understand the message of Cultural Intelligence the man is trying to spread. Please don't look at this video the same way you look at 'Love Marriage'.
You rock Wilbur. I love what you are doing, Keep it going
Hey Wilber! Thank you so much for this video! I would love to travel to India some day, and I feel that much more prepared! I would hate to run into a bathroom and not find any toilet paper! Now I know what to expect!
YOU SIR, ARE A GENIUS. i am a south indian and i absolutely love this video. keep it up!
While squatting is a healthier way to go to the loo, tissue paper (and some water if necessary) is DEFINITELY cleaner than using your left hand!! It cleans more thoroughly and means your hand doesn't come into contact with the faeces.
Even if you use soap to then clean your hands, that soap bar will then have germs on it which will be passed on to the next person who mightn't wash their hands thoroughly enough.
A western-style toilet with a simple step to aid squatting is the best method.
I thought that the soup from that dipper(?) always tasted a little rank. Thank you Wilbur this is first class!
HAHAHAHAHAHAI CAN'T STOP LAUGHING :D I LOVE THIS GUY HAHAHAHAHAHAHA ... Just a question is that a joke or he is really serious hahahahaha
what? no purel? this is the most insightful video I've seen in a while. thank you, sir.
I thought your lleft hand was very very clean first class experience and you don't wanna shake with it, weird
Here's some fun trivia. Kakoos comes from the dutch word for toilet or outhouse "kakhuis". This was probably a loanword into Tamil from Malayalam since the Dutch first landed in Kerala (or the area that would later become Kerala). The Indonesian language uses the same dutch word as well.
We use left habd for cleaning the bottom, and when we take the soap we take it FIRST in RIGHT hand, form the lather and then bring both the hand together, this is done twice.
One more important thing.... we keep two soaps in bathroom, the toilet soap is generally different from the bathing soap.
THIS IS THE CLEANEST WAY IN THE WHOLE WORLD.
What if you are left handed?
Feels great! First time using a latrine today, I just had to wash my hands very thoroughly when I was done. My only advice, practice squatting before entering the latrine :-)
He is a great comedian to me! Whenever i feel down i just look through his video's and i feel so happy haha! He never fails to make me laugh!
I almost died at the taboo part! OMG! HAHAHAHA!
Amazing video, very informative. I used it for the forst time and I was successful
Sir.
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain the proper way to use the eastern style toilet. Understand though that it is difficult for Americans to clean themselves with the bare hand because of our own taboos. But, hey......when in India do as the Indians do and pass the salt....with the right hand please.
This guys a legend.
What do old people do? not even a handle to hold on to!
This killed me, I have abdominal pain from the laughter!!! This "Wilbur Sugunaraj" guy is so funny!
That is a good idea, I have been doing that.
The hand is washed well before cooking.
Nobody dare to explain these things and that too in a very untidy latriene like the one in the clip. Hats of to you for your open nature in front of the world.
I was really shocked when he showed the mug and said "I'll show you what we all do with this" ! :O
He's saying you use water and wash with your left hand. I'm sure that your own excretion will leave your hand after you wash it off your hand with water perhaps while you're still seated but after you have washed your butt properly (at this stage your left hand is still not clean but shit is not on your hand). THEN go to wash your hands thoroughly with soap. Now your hands are clean properly. Actually even doctors such as Dr.Oz recommend washing your behind. - :)
I appreciate his endeavour very much . I really think he is serious. And I want him to be so.
Carry on Wilbur
Totally hiring you as my tour guide when I go to India.
Sir, I have been watching your videos for the last two weeks, and i take a bow for your work on social cause.. Thought they are funny but that's how we reach to the public.. Great work. Come to east India and shoot some thing on people living there.. I have several things on mind and wish to help you in your work..
Enzymes in the sewer system actually consume the toilet paper, so it is quite sustainable. Also, most toilet paper is made from harvested trees, or recycled paper.
That was quite informative. You're welcome, Sir. Keep up the good work.
this is by far the best video i ve seen
My compliments for the explanatory video. However, there is a basic flaw. The water is poured from the front not from the back as shown in the video. If you try to pour water from the back, it would be extremely awkward, difficult, you may sprain yourself and may even lose balance. Pouring water from the back is done only when it is done by someone else, for example by a mother for her children, as that is the most practical thing to do. However, for one's own use, it has to be from the front only.
Front or back as long as the brown stuff is off your bottom there cannot be a flaw! :D
Thanks for this video! I've actually been curious about this method since I am from America and there are no Eastern style latrines.
So then when you put your clothes on they will get wet.
Thank you for the info. I have been talking about this subject today. I just moved to Italy and was wondering what to do it some toilet (holes)
I read that the toilet paper was clugging the hole and you had to use the water!
sir pranam..thank you for the detailed description.
Now there are western toilets everywhere in India and eastern toilets with good system so that anyone can understand its use. This video shows a very rustic toilet which you'll get if you go to very rural places. In hotels even small hotels you will get western toilets but may not get toilet paper. In India we use water to clean as we think water cleans everything. Yes there is no relation with the handshake and doing toilet job in left hand. Thanks. I request the uploader of this video to use some animation or paintings rather than doing himself. (Very funny ! LOL). Western people I assure you that you will get a very different things(good), language than what this video says and this is typical south Indian style very different from other three parts of India. Thanks
Oh em gee, I love you Wilbur! You make me proud yaar!
i appreciate ur guts wilbur ,the onli one to explain typical Indian tradition
"otherwise everything will be in the front" XD XD XD
i think i've watched this video like 10 times straight hahahaha... and still laugh every time!!! :P
ROFL i cant stop laughing at the "Terminology!!" and the intro "Wilbur sargunaraj" !!!! Amazing!!
Good man! First class experience :-) thank you :-)
Remember to take your pants OFF -Very Important
I love your satire. Please keep making them.
it's ok to wipe your ass with your hand if you use water…very very clean….yeah…right
Thank you...quite informative. No left hand shaking..got it.
haha, that was great. Thanks for making this video and for covering a taboo topic just for the sake of us confused westerners. I found your video from a link on Full Stop India while doing research for my first trip to your country! :)
This is the same type of toilet we used in Senegal. Except ours had a flushing mechanism.
very very first class experience!!
No worries.. By the way in the Middle East, we got the same types of toilets too.. And water is much more cleaner than toilet paper alone, however both water and toilet paper is the best.
splashing a bucket of water is necessary after the act and many of the toilets have flashing system as well.It is not an issue. Yes, in public toilets it may lead to diseases, but not at home. Both the hands could be used for cooking once they are washed.
Good job, very informative to non asians - I have read so many blogs about non asians finding it hard to use Indian toilets. Its clean and hygienic unlike the tissue culture.
Yep i used this for long long time, its really very clean
To the Indians who swear Wilbur and think its a disgrace to Indians, here is my reply! He is not showing something that is not done in India! He just explains how to use Indian Latrine system and clears the taboo of how it used!! Is that anything wrong?? If you think its wrong, then you are a disgrace and you should not take shit next time in Indian latrine! To be honest, this is a brilliant video and have to appreciate his brilliance and to show what we do! also appreciate that he is not shy!
OMG!!! THIS IS VERY USEFUL!! I USUALLY DONT LOCK THE DOOR terminolgy~
This guy knows his shit.
A FIRST CLASS EXPERIENCE...very very good
That was a first class experience.
This method Is best, imagine how much paper would be used in India. More paper for paper user.
if you are a noob then yes... also if if you feel you will be taking some time in there then its always better to take your pants off and squat freely... its more comfortable... But once you are more comfortable and you are generally quick with your business you can actually drop the pants till your knees and squat... and since your thighs and upper calf will be pressed together your pants won't move .... and as i said with practice you will wash like a pro... :D
Thanks Man!! This will help many and it IS cleaner than TP
Awesome! You are the most 'Alive ' person I've ever seen!!!
Very informational... thanks for being the teacher. Very brave of you.
Very informative and inspiring advice! Now I see that my toilet (seat), three-layer toi-paper or a bidet, it's all just......... a European hangover :DDD
1. lock the door
2. aim for the hole
3. finish your business
4. use water to wash
5. use left hand for washing
Sounds a bit familiar
The best toilets are in Japan. The new toilets, not the old ones.
They are very comfortable with heated seat, and the jet spray of water really cleans you well.
