This for a class and it won the audience award at my school's digital media showcase! It was fun to do an homage/parody to series like The Walten Files or Mandela Catalog. This was almost entirely made in After Effects, which was a mistake, but hey I learned a lot.

Well this certainly got more traction than I ever expected. I only uploaded this video to UA-cam because someone asked to see it, but I'm very happy that so many others liked it as well!
I've had some people ask if this will become a series and as of now... not sure. I have some ideas for more FEAR PSAs, but it's more of a matter of if I have the time/energy to make it. So hey stay tuned and there may be more nature-related horror in the future.

i expected the call step to be like, "if you see or hear a loved one calling for help or danger, ask for the code word. call authorities and leave immediately if they don't know it."
but just yelling and confirming your codes when you see any companions on the campground who isn't in distress and continuing on your hike is a bad idea, and exactly what the angler tree would want 😳

This reminds me so much of one of my favorite pieces of this kind of art: Wilderness Survival Guide by Gemini Home Entertainment. I immediately thought of Nature's Mockery when it started describing the Angler's Trap. Love nature based analog horror since there is so much about nature that can be scary and probably just as much that we don't even know about that could be far more terrifying than natural disasters, or diseases. Yet, when most people think of nature, they think of peaceful hikes, sunshine, friendly animals. Its the perfect subject for simple, natural horror.

Being compared to Gemini Home Entertainment is such a compliment! That series does such amazing things. I wasn't thinking of Nature's Mockery when making this, but I'm sure the influence was there in the back of my mind somewhere.
And I totally agree about your thoughts on horror in nature! I got the idea of Evil Trees because I was thinking of how spooky it would be to be alone in the woods and thinking you're alone, but you're not. I didn't want to do just a Spooky Man In The Treeline type story, though, so I thought "Okay what if the TREES were the Spooky Man"

I like how all of these steps are guaranteed to fail
Continuously verifying the code word with people outside will make the trees know what it is the second you use it once
Marking the trees immediately places you right up against any potential traps
Calling out to people will give away your location immediately
Covering/cowering is pointless because the effective range of hallucinations is 1000m and the trees can move

Also random tangent but my first thought when the video brought up the code words was, “Just write it down. Even if you drop it, the trees can’t read, right?” But now, the more I watch it, the less confident I feel in that solution.

This is awesome! Would love to see more F.E.A.R PSAs or similar in the future! Maybe taking inspiration from the plant life in other parts of the US? Feels just like if you took the SCP foundation and turned it into a group of park rangers warning you about bear safety lol
During the “Count” section I expected the advice to be about seeing new trees show up where there weren’t any. Something about the numbers being moved out of order was WAY more disconcerting to me. I don’t know what exactly made it such a chilling idea, but it REALLY worked. Almost makes it feel like the entire forest could be covered in these things all shuffling around when you’re not looking. Very spooky.
The ending was a nice surprise too! And by covering up the last C, it leaves me feeling like I missed out on a potential life-saving piece of info. The narrative is built on the pretense of safety and then! Oh no! What’s cover mean???? Very smart. Especially following the implication that these trees can sit around waiting outside people’s front doors
Super engaging stuff, and in such a short runtime! Awesome work!!!

I'm just guessing hear but for the last tactic, C standing for "cover", probably means to cover your ears and eyes and is potentially the most important one. Since the hallucinations are both auditory and visual, covering your eyes and ears would effectively make the tree useless and unable to manipulate you to get closer. And since it's a tree, it'll probably be incredibly slow, meaning it's only effective tool is it's hallucination tactics. Excellent how much thought and depth there is to this short little analog horror video! And I wonder if anyone else picked up on what i noticed lol
