      This is an old video, i realise, but uhh, you wana hammer the CV shaft before removing the lower balljoint. It should be able to move about 5mm in and out, and theres no danger of pulling a joint appart that way.
      Also, the ball end of the hammer would be better... sometimes they are very stubborn, and wont come out with out some extreme hammering. Less likely to mess up threads with the ball end.
      Thank you for the video, it served it's purpose for me :)

    Great instructional video!
    Wish this would have been the first video I watched, instead of the last - regarding my Honda Element ball joint replacement. Going forward, I'll be searching for Sue's 1A Auto videos.

    I love the idea you didn't have to remove the steering knuckle to replace that lower ball joint, I've seen other vids on UA-cam where they remove the whole steering knuckle to do the job, unnecessarily your method saves time I got to do ball joints on my 03 Honda Element this will definitely help me

    • @elizabethf8078

      That only happens with the OEM's from back-in-the-day, when (thanks to no snap ring or bad install) the ball joint would pop up out of the knuckle and destroy the clamp on the cv axle. When that happens, the bolt gets frozen like granite. It took me hours of peneteting oil, hammering with a pickle fork and eventually a ball joint separator and my neighbor's hydraulic impact wrench to get it out of the lower bracket..I don't have a lift, so I didn't have enough room to fit my press in. It wouldn't press straight from above, then hit the ground when I was ready to put my new one in. Genuine pain in the @#$%!

    When ever I'm trying to figure out what maybe needing to be fix on my Honda Element, I come here to check to see how to do the work and if I am able to do the work myself.
    Thank you Sue for all the work you showed in the video. It's too bad 1A Auto does not have a service that would also rent you out to do the work after we order the parts. I hv spent thousands on repairs in diffrent shows do to the fact that I'm simply not strong enough to do the job. What frustrates me is the jobs are not done correctly and there is always something else seeming to need to be repaired. Yes parts get old but really, 80 thousand miles and I'm told I hv to replace for the second time the front struts again? I've given up on finding an honest mechanic shop. Seeing Sue working on the repairs also tells me how much I've been grossly over charged for the work stated they did. 😡
    I sure admire that Sue and all her knowledge. Thank u again for the videos. 👍🏽

    You’re wrong about the axle nut. The factory absolutely crimps it in those two places. It’s to ensure that the nut doesn’t back out. You should absolutely re crimp it after installation too.

    Try not to hit the axle end with a hammer you can ruin the threads instead reinstall the axle but up to the threads and wack away. She could have used the air hammer 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @stan4930
      @stan4930 4 роки тому +2

      I thought that too. A rubber mallet works well, but if all you have is a metal hammer, just put a block of wood on it and smack that with the hammer. Then, if you have only a hammer and no wood...just put the nut on backwards, at least it gives you a bigger surface to hit.

    She makes it look so easy. I am trying to remove my CRV lower ball joint but it will not come out of the control arm.. I’ve tried, a fork, a ball joint spreader, pressure from another jack. I used heat applied and penetrating oil with no results. I haven’t use a bfh because the factory manual says not to hammer the Control arm. If I can’t get it out I hope I don’t have to get another control arm and a knuckle.

    My ball joints did not come out with an air hammer.. I only wound up mushrooming them. Had to remove knuckle, angle grind off the spindle enough so that I could put a pitman on there and impact that sucker out. Neat trick if it works, though.

    • @michaelabbey6073
      @michaelabbey6073 2 роки тому

      If you have a ball joint press then there shouldn’t be the need for the air hammer. Air hammers can be a great tool to get you out of jams but can also cause a lot of damage that will result and more work than needed.

    WARNING. My ball joint would not seperate. Hit it with the pickle fork, then a ball joint seperator. Decided to saw it off, but in order to replace the ball joint you need to knock out the axle shaft from the hub which for me was impossible. In the video the lady hits it with a hammer and it pops right out. In real life that's not how it worked. Anywho, just be wary that this stuff is not as easy as it seems. Sucks. My El has become a piece of junk for the time being.

      Not 100% clear tightening brake knuckle after tire on??
      Had to remove the lower control arm with ball joint on the brake knuckle using press rigged up with a small socket over the caster nut (even bent at angle not screwed on enough) the socket had a round end that mated well with the Cheap Harbor freight C clamp that would never again attempt to remove other bushings bending Clamp on precious job.

    • @MrSupernova111
