I watched this unfold on TV. It was absolutely horrific. The panic, people desperately trying to help each other.
The narrator mentioned the clubs song 'You'll never walk alone' which is sung before every game. Never has a song been so apt. I always have a tear in my eye when I hear it.
Daniel, I know this isn't a reaction channel but I think you would see for yourself the passion, memories and unity these fans have after all they've been through if you watch them sing it. I know there's a video of it on UA-cam.

King Kenny (Dalglish), Liverpool legend and manager at the time went to almost every funeral and those he couldn't were attended by players or other club representatives. The Families were supported by the club where possible. Kenny stepped down the following year. It must have been difficult for everyone but it took it's toll on Kenny

Fair play for taking the time to learn about this mate💜I've known about this since my teens(20 years now🤔😔),and I'm not a fan of either club,or even football in particular really, but this is SUCH a heartbreaking story,it always has me tearing up 😪
Another aspect that he didn't touch on,was the press coverage afterwards (by the S*n in particular😑😡😡),where they not only blamed the Liverpool fans, but outright villyfied them, making up stories, including Liverpool fans SUPPOSEDLY going through the pockets of the victims, leading to a stereotype that still stands today, of Scousers being thieves....👀😡😡

I remember this, what was the most telling was the reform in policing games and the way future games where handled but at same time blaming the fans, this genuinely was footballs darkest day, 97 humans died for no reason, the one and only thing to come from this was the end to terraces at the top of the English game (slowly being stopped in the EFL aswell)

Don't kid yourself. Lots of people believed it.
The fact is that, given the reputation of Liverpool fans (and English fans in general) at the time, a narrative of "Drunk hooligans causing trouble" was entirely believable because it had happened so many times previously in the 1970's & 80's

  • @Mantis_Toboggan_MD.

    Re the "Sun" newspaper.
One of the big reasons the 'Sun' is hated is because they went with the headline - "THE TRUTH" on the front page and then printed the allegations that the police had made about drunk fans attacking cops, attacking ambulance crews, urinating on dead bodies, picking the pockets of the dead/dying etc....
There were other papers that also printed these allegations but they printed them as "Allegations", which is still pretty bad but Nowhere near as bad as printing them as fact.
There was CCTV & BBC TV cameras trained on the pitch that day and none of them picked up any footage of fans behaving as alleged. Also, only ONE ambulance crew ever made it on to the pitch (which is a whole other matter!) that day and they never reported being attacked. In fact they later testified the exact opposite.
So that is why the Sun newspaper is so despised in Liverpool and Merseyside in general. Also, the other papers printed retractions fairly soon afterwards but the Sun never apologised for something like 15-20 years or so.
It really is disgusting when you think about it.

Me, my dad and Mum who are huge Liverpool fans watched this live on tv like the hysel disaster too. Over here in Ireland during the 80’s we got to see on tv the majority of Liverpool matches. When in the fans came onto the pitch we thought it was just crowd trouble/pitch invasion, I remember being very angry at our own supporters cause it looked like it was going to be classic, then we saw a fan getting cpr and then the fans crushed, colour drew from our faces and then reports of people had died, it was truly shocking. This vid doesn’t highlight the complete stupidity and catalogue of disasters by the authorities involved, the previous year Liverpool played Forrest in a semi final fa cup with fans being stewarded with barriers down the streets, there was none of that this time, imagine putting Duckenfield in charge of his first ever football match in this fixture. The way the Liverpool fans were treated after the event was a disgrace even to this day, no doubt some muppet will post an idiotic message about this

12:30 - Re the "ticketless fans" story that was put out.
There was a sports show on BBC every Saturday called "Grandstand" and they reported on Grandstand around 3:30pm or so that ticketless fans broke open a gate etc.... Then again that evening on the 6 o'clock news and again at 9pm. This story was IMMEDIATELY put out as the official cause.
So.... The question to ask ourselves is - Even if that was true, how could anyone possibly know that was true within 30 minutes of the event occurring? Aren't you supposed to carry out an investigation into these type of accidents before establishing what happened? It was obvious this was the official line from the police in order to cover up the fact that it was their error that had led to multiple deaths.
The reason this story was so readily believed at the time, was that football fans (not just Liverpool fans) in England were extremely badly behaved in the 1970's & 80's. There was regular violence, pitch invasions and fans turning up to big games without tickets was a common occurrence.
"Crowd control" rather than "crowd safety", was the priority when it game to policing football matches. This was a tragedy that was YEARS in the making. Liverpool fans were the unlucky ones but in all honesty it could've been fans of almost any club at the time.

  • @HamzaDarby

UK no longer have those cages in their stadiums and they've been seated still to today. There are discussions for safe-standing stadiums. Plans for these would remove the seats but still allocate the space for the ticket holder. A lot of fans do want to stand, but only with the knowledge that something like this can never happen again.

This was a tragedy that was waiting to happen. The stadiums at that time were not suitable, the way the police policed games due to the real fear of crowd trouble at the time was heavy handed, the metal fences around the stands, everything. This could have happened at any stadium on any weekend back then.
This day was just error after error a horrible mess. However, the way the authorities and the extent they went to to cover their mistakes up was disgraceful.
    RIP 97.

My Dad was at the match, in the upper tear and saved a lot of other fans by dragging them out of that pen!
What the police and government did by backing them was totally unacceptable. No one has ever been prosecuted or punished for this. That is why Liverpool fans never sing to the national anthem. The Sun newspaper wrote an article about the incident saying that Fans were urinating on the police and stealing from the dead! No one who supports Liverpool has ever bought the Sun newspaper since.
The families never gave up the fight for justice, it took so long! Steven Gerard’s cousin was the youngest to loose his life, he was just 10 years old! There are now 97 victims as one person had been in a coma since the disaster and died 2 years ago 😢😢😢

The 2017 inquest changed all the death certificates to unlawful killings and yet nobody has ever been brought to justice. The tragedy on 15th April 1989 was horrific enough. But the lies and cover up from the police, media and right to the top of the government was inexcusable. This video barely scratches the surface of the horror of that day and the subsequent days, weeks, months and years to come.
I was 14 at the time of Hillsborough. I have the words etched in my memory as I walked through the door that day. My mum and dad watching it unfold, my mum turned to me and said, something terrible is happening at the match. It was around 3:15 and we watched in terror at the pure chaos unravelling on screen. We were fortunate that we had no relations at the game. But all around us, news was coming in of friends and neighbours who were missing. There were no mobiles back then and people had no way of contacting their loved ones. The fans did more that day to save people’s lives than the emergency services. Without their quick actions, the death toll would have been much higher.
And yet they were vilified in the press to try and cover up police negligence . Families of dead children asked how much alcohol their loved one had drank and if they had a valid ticket!
LFC has and always will support the families, they have been amazing. I recommend people watch (Jimmy McGovern’s) Hillsborough drama or ITVs drama, Anne, for an accurate portrayal of what the family’s went through.

Ì will never forget this day. The memories of the feelings of confusion and helplessness, followed by anger never leave.
To this day the club does not play on April 15th, it is a day of rememberance. The players of both the Mens and Womens teams as well as the academy lay wreaths at the memorial and the club website devotes itself to rememberance. Fansites also remember and at 3:06pm (the time the match was stopped) there is a citywide silence with the bells of the cathederals chiming 97 times. Fans across the world pause and pray/remember at this time as well.
Until recently there was a annual memorial service held at Anfield, but that was stopped after the inquests at the request of the families.
There is a minutes silence/applause (depending on whom we are playing) and a mosaic before the closest home match to the 15th every April.

@@sconaldo7 it is 100% true, they still have terraces in Germany even in their biggest stadia but I don't remember seeing 96 Germans die every Saturday. The difference is their government enforced regulations on stadium maintenance before a disaster struck meanwhile ours waited until 96 people died and then used terraces to absolve themselves of blame which you've proven has worked. In modern football matches the entire away end and usually whole home ends stand up in all seater venues which has way more potential to be dangerous than just letting them stand up in a purposely designed terracing with appropriate crush barriers.

The manager on the day was Kenny Dalglish (ex-player), he went to every funeral and continued as the manager but it became too much for him. Him (and his wife) ensured the club supported all victims. The 97 will never be forgotten by this club. They will never walk alone. This is the link ua-cam.com/video/q8yTLHzeBXU/v-deo.html

They mentioned in there Duckenfield was inexperienced in policing this kind of event. The same two teams had reached the Semi final the previous year. It too was played at the same venue. There was no trouble and no problems. Surely there must have been a report on the way in which that event had been policed. If Duckenfield had followed the same plans from the previous year there was no need for there to be any problems. And yes 97 is the official number of fatalities. 766 injured. R.I.P. To the 97. Yes the same two teams played the year before, but to say that their were no problems is not true, I was a Liverpool fc season ticket holder in 1989 and had attended the 1988 semi-final the previous season which you mentioned and believe me it was very close to having tragic consequences with an almost identical number of mistakes including the police using the strange funneling techniques which I had never witnessed before or after in 20 years of supporting the Reds, when you see shepherds loading sheep into pens that is what the police were doing from about half a mile away! Leading into a bottle neck and identical crush outside the ground upon arrival, the local bumpkin South Yorkshire police were ill equipped in manpower and common sense and again opened the central pen and the fans told to enter without showing tickets ( I had my ticket with stub still attached afterwards) I was carried down the same central pen by the forward movement and could only see the tunnel in front of me and ended up being crushed up against the crash barrier that gave way the following year, fans were also climbing up into the seated area above in desperation only for a giant of a bloke getting me of the barrier I might not be her telling you what nearly happened in 1988,I like others escaped out of the central pen and into the corner pen which had plenty of room but I was so drained by events I sat down shaking and didn't take much notice in the match, the next season when the FA Cup threw the 2 teams together again I refused to attend even though I was a season ticket holder, God bless the 97 YNWA ❤

As a side note, it's amazing how the memory plays tricks on you.
So many people in the comments saying they remember watching the game live on TV.
It wasn't broadcast live on TV (not in the UK anyway) it was played at 3pm on a Saturday and it was supposed to be shown later that evening as part of "Match of the Day". So TV cameras were there but it was not on Live TV.
I think what people are remembering is watching "Grandstand" and they interrupted the Horse racing or snooker (or whatever they were showing at 3 o'clock) to go over to John Motson at Hillsborough for some breaking news etc....

Duckenfield, the guy in charge that day who said the fans opened the gate, later admitted that he has ordered the gate to be opened and failed to give order to close the tunnel to pen 3&4. He was charged with manslaughter in 96 cases but was voted not guilty which is a shame to this day. He hadn't even looked at the place he was in charge of before this day, nor had he read the safty rules of the stadium.

I really think it would have been better if you had watched any video on British disasters including Hillsborough and Bradford etc made and / or narrated by British voices, as the incorrect pronunciations of teams or fans names etc, in my opinion, lacks a sense of respect for victims of these events.
I mean no offence, but it just doesn't feel right to me to hear American voice overs on stories such as this. 😥
I do appreciate the gravity of your response though and thank you for being respectful re this tragedy and travesty of the police actions.
