- Walt Disney's "Beauty and the Beast: A Concert on Ice," starring two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Ekaterina Gordeeva in the role of Belle and Olympic Gold Medalist Victor Petrenko as the Beast, begins production this week at CBS Television City in Los Angeles. The hour-long special, marking Gordeeva's first duet performance since the untimely death of her husband and skating partner, Sergei Grinkov.
Inspired by the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical and the Academy Award- winning full-length animated feature film, "Beauty and the Beast: A Concert on Ice" will be hosted by James Barbour, who currently stars as the Beast in the Los Angeles stage production. and Susan Egan, who was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance as the original Belle on Broadway.
The magical score from the feature film, written by the Oscar Award- winning team of Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman and the lyrics from the Broadway musical written by Tim Rice, will be performed by Egan and members of the Los Angeles cast including Barbour, Gary Beach ("Lumiere"), Gibby Brand ("Cogsworth"), Mari Jo Catlett ("Wardrobe"), John Dewar ("Monsieur D'Arque"), Heather Lee ("Babette"), Jeanne Lehman ("Mrs. Potts"), Aaron Lipin ("Chip"), Michael Piontek ("Gaston") and Jamie Torcellini ("La Fou").
Joining Gordeeva and Petrenko on ice are world champion figure skaters Scott Hamilton, Lloyd Eisler, JoJo Starbuck and renowned pair skaters, Shae- Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz and Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko. The skaters will perform their artistry on ice as the cast from the theatrical production perform the lavish score.
"Beauty and the Beast: A Concert on Ice" will present original ice choreography for a selection of the musical's songs. The special begins with the show's rousing opening production number "Belle," sung by Egan, where Gordeeva makes her exciting entrance as the town's beautiful book worm, yearning for the romantic life that she loves to read about. Later, Egan will take to the ice when she joins Gordeeva and they perform to "Home." Other skating production numbers include "If I Can't Love Her," featuring Petrenko and Gordeeva; "Be Our Guest," featuring Scott Hamilton as the torchy candelabra Lumiere, and the "Beauty and the Beast" title song, in which Petrenko and Gordeeva are joined on the ice by JoJo Starbuck as Mrs. Potts.
They need to do stuff like this again. I remember watching this as a kid. Loved it. Especially with beauty and the beast being one of my favorite movies.
This was pretty much exactly a year since Sergei Grinkov died. I’m so glad that his death didn’t keep Katia from skating. She’s amazing. Their daughter Daria skates too, and she’s amazing too. They’ve just been so strong for the past twenty two years. By the way if you’re wondering why Susan Egan sounds familiar she did the voice for Meg in Hercules.

I actually saw daria grinkova katia’s daughter skate at mid Atlantic regionals at sky rink back in 2007-08 and I’ve been a huge admirer of her and Katia and her husband Sergei watching katia and Sergei skate pure poetry
And I was on a first name basis with victor pertrenko for a long time bc my former coach and him grew up in the city of Odessa Ukraine and marina kylimova and Sergei ponermerenko their son anthony competes for the United States in ice dance and an Olympic hopeful for 2022 Beijing

Man… my dad took me and my sister to see this when I was 5 and I fell asleep about 10 minutes in 😩 I’m glad I can now watch it on UA-cam as an adult haha

Scott Hamilton who is Lumiere in this special is my childhood idol in ice skating.
I love Scott Hamilton, the only figure skater that I have seen that does a backflip.

Oh my gosh! It's been a holiday tradition to watch this every Xmas Eve since I was 5! My own copy was accidentally thrown out a few years ago.. Thank you so much for sharing this!!
My family and I had the Aladdin on Ice video tape with Kurt Browning and Kristi Yamaguchi. My dad and I would turn it on and put on roller skates inside our house and skate around with the tape playing. But after his death from brain cancer back in 2006, I wanted to take skating lessons in honor of that memory. Now I’m on the last basic level. I hope I get to compete someday.
I remember a part of this show on a recorded VHS. I didn't speak a word of English, back then, but I loved it!
I recorded this on vhs when it aired, and I wore that tape out so much! Lol
CBS aired this twice, first in 1996 during the holidays and again in August 1997

They would add a transition (the 7 notes of the prologue theme in F Major, just like in the 1995 LA production after “It is you!”, then softens down like in the Cruise Line Production, just one semitone higher) to Mrs. Potts’ additional verse from the 2017 movie: “Winter turns to spring…”

Gaston is a prime example of why it's not always the best idea to go through life with a bunch of adoration blinded cheerleaders, better not to have your head and ego inflate to the size of a Macy's float.
