I loved Ghost Next Door, it was a psychological fear. Feeling invisible and alone and abandoned, not being able to make sense of what's happening to you
Goosebumps was like the Stephen King of kid shows, the show was scary because of its cheesiness and creepy.
Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark are like the kid versions of Tales from the Crypt during that time.

Am I the only one (I know, commentors' cliche) who'd LOVE a *Goosebumps* reboot on Netflix? Imagine if R.L. Stine helped green-light & promote a new show with new (hopefully better) child-actors to adapt books that didn't make it into the original series? I grew up loving the old show but admit most episodes haven't aged well.

It kinda had an opposite effect on me. Goosebumps is one of the reasons why I hate modern horror films. Horror films now use nothing but jump scares to terrify an audience. Goosebumps however had actually concepts that was truly horrifying, something that would resonate with an audience much longer.
Keith Yeah, I agree. I do like jumpscares, I think the reason it's so disliked is because of this huge bandwagon. Especially now with horror games too people are upset about jumpscares being over used. Honestly I think jumpscares are fun.

When I saw the title I was praying that the Haunted Mask episode would make it in this list. It really did deserve that number 1 spot.

The Girl who cried monster is one of the worst episodes in my opinion. That girl is so annoying and the worst part is that the pay off is utter crap. Nothing happens to her even though through the WHOLE episode you want it to.

I remember renting these around Halloween from the video store, A Night in Terror Tower was always my favorite! I remember reading it too and just being so amazed by it.
I still love Cuckoo Clock of Doom as my favorite. (Spoiler for anyone who hasn’t seen it) The idea that time itself was reversing life to nonexistence is pretty terrifying, and now it leaves me with more questions about the clock’s power.
Also, it's one of the few times that a character is essentially murdered by the hero

Good episode. It's also in my top 5. I'm glad Michael got back to his right age at the right time. I also hated his sister so I'm glad he was the only child at the end too, leaving a cliffhanger will he or won't he ever get his sister back.

Tale of the Dead Man's Float would be #1 in my opinion. Quite scary for a kids show, and the monster looked sick!
That episode made me terrified to go into pools or even near large bodies of water for Months. It's most certaintly a classic.
For me the episode "My Best Friend is Invisible" scared the shit out of me with the ending. I personally read night of the living dummy 2 and never saw the episode, but I think the book is a lot freakier.
Watching Goosebumps every October is the still my best way to get into the Halloween spirit.

The episode about those masks coming to life is the scariest episode of Goosebumps Imo. Used to scare the absolute shit out of me when I was younger. Most episodes of Goosebumps didn't really scare me all that much, looking back at it now it's kinda cheesy, but the mask episode genuinely scared me and I still find it disturbing.
For some reason full face latex masks like those tend to creep people out quite a bit in real life too. I guess it's kinda like the Uncanny Valley. I know I've seen some HD TVs where the picture is so vibrant and the movement of the characters...real or animated creep the absolute hell outta me..I tend to avoid purchasing those kinds. Though the fact that now the episodes look kinda cheesy is mostly a product of it's time, it was in the mid 90's when they were first made and the late 90's when it ended. As of right now it's been 22 years since the first episode of Goosebumps, so..yeah it's gonna seem goofy and cheesy by our standards now, plus it was horror stories meant for younger audiences.

ShinKyuubi Yeah, it's just how they moved and how they looked. It really does go into that uncanny valley, and just the idea of Halloween masks coming to life is a really creepy concept in itself. This episode really had me shook when I was younger. I remember going into a Party City to get my costume for Halloween and I just remember how uncomfortable I felt around all the creepy masks that they had on the shelves. I thought one of them would come to life and chase me through the store lol.
This is a really underrated episode of goosebumps but no one here has mentioned “Piano lessons can be murder” that one really messed with me when I was little cause I had a piano in my home, we moved in and the people that owned the house before didn’t want to move it so they left it so we were stuck with a piano.
I loved this show growing up. The Goosebumps books and the show are a part of my life. My favorite episodes are How to Kill a Monster, More Monster Blood, Stay Out of the Basement, The Girl Who Cried Monster and A Night in Terror Tower with the lord high executioner famously screaming, "YOU CAN'T ESCAPE ME!!"

I didn't like the physical depiction of Slappy on the show. He looked more cartoony than how he looked on the cover of the book. Not as creepy. It seems like they probably made the show version less scary on purpose.

I think his design in the show was to make up for not adapting the first novel by giving him Mr Wood’s hair colour (the original antagonist in the first novel).

Never saw the Ghost Next Door episode, but I read the book when I was a kid. It's super good, probably my favorite in the series.

In my opinion, it actually had a happy ending.
Oh, absolutely! Hannah saves Danny's life, and gets to join her family in Ambiguous Heaven. Sounds pretty happy to me. I also thought it was an interesting deviation from Stine's typical formula, since the "twist" is revealed early enough to actually be a big part of the plot.
I remember the episode "cry of the cat"!! I watched when I was still a kid, and it scared the shit out of me! xD
Also My favorite Goosebumps episodes or books: Werewolf of Fever Swamp, awesome and entertaining story along with Night in the Tower of Terror.
The later because of the idea of learning you have no family and no identity of all of a sudden, is pretty scary to consider.
3:45 That episode had the best plot twist in the series when you learn that Hannah was actually the ghost.

No Werewolf of Fever Swamp?! Damn! That episode scared me beyond belief when I was younger. It still holds up pretty good today as well. Definitely should of been on the list. Can't Believe it didn't even make an honorable mention......

Dr. Strange Bat horror land was like a crossover thing he did. Slappy had his own novels which i loved when i was younger.

I loved the Chilogy episodes. The guy playing the villain was having fun, and it was contagious. He is what makes those episodes fun to watch.

Man goosebumbs is so nostalgic for me and, one of the best parts of my childhood. I remeber as a little kid joining the goosebump fan club where they would send you books and, various knick-knack each month. I remeber being so excited when the books would come in the mail. after I was done with my school work me and my ma would sit down and, read the books together. Then I would watch her play videogames until bedtime ah good times.
Anyone remember Give Yourself Goosebumps? They were my first exposure to the Choose your own adventure style back in the mid 2000s. I think my favorite is the one about the cursed comic book store.

Not only is The Ghost Next Door a very clever and surprisingly well-acted episode, it's the only Goosebumps episode (and book) that made me cry. I won't spoil what happens, but the ending is very touching and surprisingly emotional.

I grew up in the 2000s but my older siblings grew up mid 90s, I got to watch all of the vhs tapes including both haunted masks, thank god for hand me downs

Indeed, as a kid I had read a good number of Goosebumps books, loved them but they didn't "scare" me; the mirror's one on the other hand... especially the ending, it really hit me with dread... trapped for all of eternity with your mind kept intact, and you can't scream...

The Cry of the Cat. The Puppet srsly freaked me out to the point i didnt sleep right for the next 2 weeks. So i rewatched and called myself a wimp. Lol

I loved this show. And that classic opening. I loved to read the books too, especially the choose your own adventure ones. But honestly the thing that influenced me the most was the PC Goosebumps Escape from Horrorland game (the one with Jeff Goldblum lol). I still to this day have nightmare/dreams of that place. It was terrifying to play as a kid and it developed my love for horror.
This show gave me ton of nightmares as a kid. Now i just find it entertaining to watch.

I used to love Goosebumps as a little kid, my grandpa would read me the books. He suffered from a heart attack and passed away while we were still in the middle of one and I never touched it or any of the others after that.
The ghost next door messed me up when I was little. I'm now always afraid I'm going to make that discovery about myself one day.
As much as I loved the "Haunted Mask" episodes, I think "Swamp Fever", "Ghost Next Door", and "Werewolf Skin" have to be my favorites.

It was based off the book, which was the sequel to the original book, where Slappy wasn't really important.

My top 5 episodes in no particular order are: "The Cuckoo Clock of Doom," "Say Cheese and Die," "Be Careful What You Wish For," "The Girl Who Cried Monster" and "A Shocker On Shock-Street" 😁 Excellent video by the way, very informative and a great look back on what made the Goosebumps series work so well.
Goosebumps was never scary. Creepy. Definitely. Scary? Not even. It was quite inventive but to say it's scary is kind of an oversell.
As a kid I found quite a few episodes scary, mainly "Tower of Terror", but they're less so now. I will say though, after watching them all on Netflix, I was seriously jump scared by "Werewolf Skin". I was not expecting that werewolf to bust it's head through the window and I just about jumped out of my seat XD

You are correct, sir. The mask episodes were the ones that stuck with me the most through adulthood. They were so well done and I remember the first mask actually scaring me quite a bit as a kid. Granted, I was close to middle school age when they came out, but still. I remember reading some of the Goosebumps books in elementary school back in the 80s. :) My favorite was Werewolf of Fever Swamp. I wonder if I still have that book stashed in storage somewhere. My mom used to order them for me through the Scholastic program my school used to have. I looked forward to those order booklets so much. ^_^ I remember being so excited when Nickelodeon announced that they'd be doing a live action TV series based on the books I loved so much. Seeing the episodes made me wanna read the books I hadn't read yet. Good times. :)

My top favorite episode is Ghost Beach. It was the first one that introduced me Goosebumps and I’m thankful for it. Scared me a lot as a kid with that scene of the two kids in the cave begging Teri and Jerry to join them was chilling and that stuck with me for years 😮
