A former actor (Louis Hayward) poses as the son of a wealthy man and gets involved in a murder in which the real son is a suspect. film is in the public domain
A perfect Depression-era movie to keep up one's hopes and spirit, and again even now with the problems our country and the world are again facing. Wickedly Chels, thanks much for posting it.
The release date of this movie is 1938. I thought that was a little late to call it a 'Depression-era movie'. That was until the moment where he in way addresses the audience while lighting the fire place, and says 'houses without people, people without houses, funny world'. No wonder the screenwriter got hauled in to the HUAC. Such communist sympathies.
I don't know when I've had so much fun, watching a movie like this. What a most phenomenal tale of a story, and, vice versa, a story of a tale, and then some. Such a fine, great actor, and his older co-star. Loved the whole interior of the house "they broke into" ... such lavishness.
Perfect, just flipping Perfect...from beginning to end. What a dashing character Louis Hayward cuts. The comedy relief provided by J.C. Nugent's & the actor who played Willetts was phenomenal everything tied up at the end a la Lulbitsch or Capra. RMH/Ohio

Every now & then, though, something fantastic happens along and one is elated to have come across it.
+Eliezer Pennywhistler Because we keep hoping that a modern day movie will be able to actually be a good movie. If a movie is not good then we have the right and the duty to turn off the movie.
Eliezer Pennywhistler Maybe that's the kind of stuff you watch, but no, I was thinking more along the lines of films like Moonrise Kingdom, The Limits of Control, Killer Joe, Goodbye to Language -a film you would most likely never understand - as well as many other cerebral films not financed or necessarily distributed by major corporate shit studios. Sorry to say, but anyone who makes or watches movies made from comic books are just plain lazy and easily entertained, simple-minded boors. The fact that these shit films may be box-office hits just shows the pathetic condition of lowbrow American audiences.
This gets off to a bit of a slow start, and the protagonist is presented as a sharpie in the beginning, but if you get past those things it becomes a very good movie.

Re Louis Hayward. He did smoke and died from a smoking related illness, not at 72 but at 75 a few weeks shy of his 76th birthday. Noel Coward was his employer, not his lover or patron. Hayward was very well aware of this kind of gossip about himself, and countless other prominent people. It pissed him off.
+Barry Lane -well, of course, if they were lovers, that fact would never have been made known - at least publicly - being gay, even 30 years ago, would've ruined one's reputation, at least in Hollywood!
If someone is gay, whether or not in the entertainment industry, there is a history encompassing an ongoing series of relationships. Noel Coward had that with several men, who over the course of time became his heirs. You may, or may not know this, but I not only knew Louis Hayward, but was his personal manager. He was not gay, resented the allusions, and despised Noel. And not for being gay, but for his personal conduct. Noel for his part, never wrote that he and Hayward had a relationship other than a professional one. That was left to his biographers and interpreters to fantasize about. Which sums it up pretty nicely from my perspective.
+Barry Lane I discovered Louis Hayward a few years ago on Turner Classic Movies.A wonderful amazing man and actor. He shines as an actor and as a human being as far as I am concerned.Good looking too!
Eva Ruah are you just "off the boat" or something? C'mon...jeez. You're either very naive, probably born in the 90s or later, or you come from a much less hung-up place, like, well, just about anywhere in Western Europe. If a BRILLIANT film, like Midnight Cowboy (1969), which stuffy, hung-up American movie ratings people gave an "X" rating to (not to be confused w/"XXX", which is hardcore porn). But the joke was on the industry in the end, since Midnight Cowboy won the "Best Picture" Oscar for the 69 year. Dustin Hoffman was marvelous as "Ratso" Rizzo and Jon Voigt was great as the naive, country boy, come to the big city (NYC) to be a "stud" -for all the rich ladies who'd pay him for "services"...when, after a while, it's obvious that his plan to be a gigolo isn't panning out, he gets desperate for money and so,1 night he wanders in some porn theater, and who happens to be sitting by him? A young Bob Balaban. Joe Buck, desperate for $, lets the kid give him a blow job but afterwards finds out the kid doesn't have any $. Anyway, in the theater, when the kid goes down on Joe Buck, they don't show anything. It's in a darkened theater, for one and all you see, basically, is like a view from the row behind them. It's all "suggestive" -but, of course, it's suggestive of "gay sex" which, has to be why it earned an "X" rating - I know that if that scene weren't in the movie, it would've gotten an "R" rating. Of course, if the exact same movie were made today it would get an "R" rating, not for the gay sex thing, but for all the other racy stuff going on. But, yes, it's hip to be gay nowadays in Hollywood, TV, etc, but there was a time when, oh, a character, here & there may have effeminate traits, etc, but the actors themselves were all "straight" as can be - even the gay ones were deep in the closet for fear of being blacklisted, in effect. Hate to say it, but that's how things worked in the bad old days.
It does not bother me that anyone is "gay", it is just that it is not something anyone needs to know, sort of personal, you know? Loved the film though.

Lovely, lively film!
EXCELLENT!
Wonderful film!
Really good and entertaining !
that was a fun movie. made me smile the hole time!
"Hole" time? HA-HA !
Amalgamation of “It Happened on Fifth Avenue” and some WC Fields routines.
Clever.
It does not bother me that anyone is "gay", it is just that it is not something anyone needs to know, sort of personal, you know? Loved the film though.
No one in the film was gay.
@@barrylane4980Nor queer.
In 1940 Lewis Hayworth was great in the movie "The son of Monte Cristo" if you get a chance see it.
Misspelled his name.
@Von Staufenberg also in film, "Repeat Performance" with Joan Leslie as a terrible cheating husband. "House By The River", where he is a murderer, "Then They Were None", same. He played a scoundrel or murderer in several films.
@@eveyholmes -He is not a bad guy in then there were none. He was filling in for the guy that was supposed to be there. Try watching Young Widow and also The Black Arrow. The fortunes of Captain Blood and Captain Pirate. And The Pirates of Capri.
@@lindaname9413 I have seen Young Widow, Man In The Iron Mask and several other films with him. He was one of my favorites years ago when I was i my teens and in my 20s.
@@eveyholmes I guess I have reignited my enjoyment of his talent. Unfortunately, some films have not been restored. I so want to see the Repeat Performance and Return of Monte Cristo. Glad you enjoy his talent, as well.
Splendid
Grand entertainment !! Thank you.
Pat. November. 2021
pretty good film
great oldie, real enjoyable
Thank you for sharing! 😄
Well, to be perfectly honest, wilde4445, the Maestro's sexual orientation never bothered me one bit - despite the fact that I'm a heterosexual - suffice to say, he was a brilliant performer, and an
utterly superb play and screen-writer, in addition to being a marvellous raconteur and an all-round jolly good chap ! Mein Gott,
wilde4445, you don't me to tell me you didn't realise Noel Coward was homosexual ? My dear, he was as camp as they come ! LOL.
"Are you sure she is a lady?" "Can you ever be?"
Seems like I have heard that before
He’s too nice and confident about the near future after he lost the second hundred!
About the movie thought it was very good well worth watching
Louis Hayward reminds me of Hugh Grant.
You can say that again.Awful. beyond belief. just ideal for the public. thats why UK. Europe. US is out of control but controlled by press.
In one of his films a little like Leonardo DiCaprio, in Captain Pirate With a van dyke breard. LOL
Nice one thanks for sharing from. Betty London UK
Excellent movie
Noticed in the credits that Charles Previn was the musical director. Father of Andre perhaps??
Only took a second find out he was his cousin
I Love a good crew ball Comedy done well and was one. Enjoy every body. 😱👀🎭

dib/ sorry re: your friend, but I could have lived without knowing Noel Coward was "gay".
This was a excellent movie. I am a Louis Hayward fan.
