Haha its funny how people are complaining because Orient Star is charging for this watch what other brands will do for a watch of the same specs, I mean if you want a $2.000 watch, well... Spend $2.000 thats it. This is a $1.000 product and worth every penny. Is not a scam is just what it is. The loose endlink is just unforgivable tho
@@НапримерПетрСмирнов I think youre overreacting, you cant just throw away the good features of this watch just to blame one (because it has AR coating) and put a price of 300 just for that
when i sae that in real i fell in love immediately, from the design, to the finish, to the pr complication, also the band, dial, i even dig the logo. what turns me off is the weird price policy which makes orient look like invicta, who puts fantasy prices on watches, and then you just buy them much cheaper anyways. why not put a reasonable official price on this watch like about 799 usd, and get some discount from a retailer to pay between 600-700 usd in the end, would make the whole watch look much better and serious competitor. cause i find it has much more character than tissot, mido, certina or many seiko in that price league. ignoring that weird price policy, its a stunner with great versatility and character imo.
Thanks for this review which hits all the bases. I'm a little surprised that the indices are printed. With such a clean dial I think low relief applied markers would look great. I agree TUS are good people to deal with, especially for UK based people.
I am a fan of Orient/OS, having eight (Arena, Ray II, Kamasu, new Triton, 2 Triton/Neptunes, OS Diver, OS GMT). The only aspect of the 1964 that appeals to me is the smaller diameter. The power reserve meter is a feature I like, but realistically, the non-handwinding Arena is the only watch that really needs it. I see the power reserve as a good marketing differentiation between Orient and Orient Star watches. That is probably why Orients with power reserve meters have apparently all been discontinued.
Excellent review Shane. I also like the Orient brand, having a dress watch, a JDM Chronograph and my venerable orange bezel Mako XL, with the shake to wake movement, pressed clasp and hollow endlinks that actually fit perfectly with no wiggle! I agree that the price is a little bit high for this though. It is worth considering at a lower price though.
I'm watching this review looking at my zelos mako titanium on my wrist and thinking the zelos has better components throughout and it cost less than half the price of the orient star. Great review as always 👏
Great review Shane! Had they kept the design of the 1st edition and tightened up those end links (wow that's awful even at $200-$300) they would have a certifiable winner, but no, they had to change it. I only have 2 name brand mechanical watches, a Mido & a Seiko, the rest are micro brands because the bang for buck is just too good to pass up.
I've had the green dial one for 2 months now. Pros...It's even more attractive in real life than the videos. A very good looking watch with good clear legible dial. Bracelet end links are fine in the model I have. Cons...Accuracy. The 1st week was great but slowly got faster and has settled in at +14spd. I've checked for magnetism and it isn't. Shane, I'm curious about the accuracy of yours if you wouldn't mind sharing.
Well, I haven't worn it lately, so I can't so what it is right now. I'm probably going to wind up selling it, as I just haven't been wearing it. Although I did have footage of it on a Time-Grappher in the video when I was actively wearing it. I think it was running +6 to 7 spd.
Thanks very much Shane. Do you think it's worth me sending it to Orient Japan for them to regulate it better than its current +14spd? It's technically still in spec for that movement, but I've read that many people with the same movement are getting accuracy in the single digits. Local Watchmakers here in Australia telll me that if they touch it, it will void the warranty. So it's frustrating to know that it's running a lot worse than most watches with this movement.
@@Bluemax-1 I know what you mean. I'd say try contacting them first to see what they say. If they would even do anything about it or just say "it's in spec" and send it back. If they won't and you really think it's a keeper it's probably worth having a local guy regulate it.
Thanks Shane. I got a message from them (in English) saying they are not able to communicate in English. So maybe I'll try local as you said. BTW... Terrific review. Thanks Shane on all your reporting of various watches. While watching this video I noticed you had the 1964 in various bands which got me to wondering where I could find some of them. Have you considered a video with some of your favorite bands and where to find them? Thanks again
I just had a Star Diver delivered from TUS today but the bezel was slightly misaligned. Sent an email to Tom and a QC'd replacement has already been sent out ro me on a next day delivery. A little disappointed I had to raise the issue but I can't fault the company or the service.
@@RelativeTime spent a day with the replacement. It looks great and is nicely made, a sort of dressy diver in the green/gold. The bracelet is very good and even the clasp is acceptable for a pressed type. The only fly in the ointment is the bezel, there's too much backplay for a "premium" product. I still think the underrated M-force diver is the pick of the range if you can live with the size and looks. It matches the quality of Orient Star at a much lower price.
I have the teal one and i think it´s very good. I would call it a dress diver with all the polished surfaces and the fancy dial. The msrp is a little high but i got it for the equivalent of $726 and that´s ok.

I don’t know why yours is so bad, but mine is the best fit I’ve ever had. I would be interested in hearing from others on this. Do I have an outlier, or is the sloppy fit in the review the outlier? @@RelativeTime Yes. I got the same color (black dial). I was really surprised to see that on yours because mine is the exact opposite. Both ends fit perfectly - probably the best fit of any of my watches. I wonder if your dealer could get you another bracelet (or end links) to try.
I agree as per bit submarinerish. I have the green orient diver ltd JDM I paid $775 and now I see them with the extra strap at $680 gray market. Same movement and perhaps with bracelet I see this as an $800 max. Also agree on Orient Service. If an issue it needs to goto Japan although Orient USA can now handle swap outs of movements I understand.
I believe that the standard of movements need to go up a notch to at least 28,800bpm rather than the constant supply of slower beating ones. Helm do a 28,800bpm diver and don't charge an arm and a leg. There are other brands too. May as well have a mecaquartz then as they have similar beats and are much, much more accurate and reliable.
Well it's the idea of slower beat rate but extended power reserve. Same with seiko's 6r series of movements and the powermatics of Tissot and Hamilton. Is that really better than a higher beat rate... Hard to say. Kind of depends
@@RelativeTimethanks for response/ nice thoughts, review. ocassionly have to choice between Seiko cpt Willard1970 MECHANICAL DIVERS CONTEMPORARY DESIGN SBDX047 2100usd by Sakurawhatches. green OS 1964 860usd by Jomashop and Glycine airman 650usd/ after yor investigation will wait
@@ПетрПетроа-ю9п Between those I'd probably go with the green Orient Star. I have a Glycine airman. It's cool, but it is a bit different, and maybe not as versatile. As for the Willard... I just have a hard time thinking it's worth over $2k. Yes, it has the 8L movement, which is based on a grand Seiko movement. Yet they don't regulate it the same. So within spec accuracy isn't any better than their 6r series. So for me if your spending that much, you might as well start looking at Longiness or Oris. In fact, some of the new caliber 400 Oris divers are getting close to that price on the grey market. Another watch to check out might be the newer slim turtles by Seiko. Like the SBDC171. Similar look to a Willard / turtle, but is more in line with the orient Star in terms of price.
Its a nice watch but iv'e gotta agree with all said , $500>750 max as at a grand+ its fighting in a league where it needs lead in its gloves . Good full & honest review .
Seiko 62MAS SPB143J1 unfortunately also has play at the end of the links. I have first version OS 1964 and end links move very little. I never noticed it until after your review It's several times worse in your review.
Little while back this one (well, the blueish green one) blipped up on my radar. I like it, indeed reminds me of early vintage submersible dive watches. 😉 But indeed, if I'm buying an Orient, it's because I know, like with Seiko, I'm getting a whopper of a deal for not thaaat much. And that's just it... it's too much for an Orient (even if it's a 'Star'). Why the need to go 'exclusive and expensive' when you can do what you're good at and sell perhaps more affordable watches but at a higher volume atleast. Not sure enough about the Orient brand weight and the power indicator design for me to pick it over a Seiko Prospex SPB143J1 with a good discount.
I think it looks a little too close to the submariner. You could have a Glycine Combat sub with similar looks with a 4hz Swiss movement for similar money. If you really want something that looks like a submariner go with a steinhart ocean 1 ceramic. Otherwise I would go for the Ocean Star Diver which is a great watch for the money with distinct looks and excellent lume.
Great video! I do not think I am a fan of the 1964 as own the Star Diver. The Star Diver is a fantastic watch that looks like its own thing. The 1964 looks great (other than that bracelet) but is too homage like for me. I also do not like the hands. These make it look more like a homage vs. the 1st edition 1964 which looked awesome. They should have kept that design. I love the power reserve meters on the Star's and think it makes them stand out.
I just believe that Orient has their hands tied by Seiko. My point proven by statement that "Grand Seiko is a separate company than Seiko." But then G.S. starts putting their spring drives into Seiko divers. Lets not be fooled, this is an attempt by Seiko to greedily get more money in an overpriced Orient (value not good) for this watch you reviewed. Ten out of 10 times, I would pick the SPB143, SBDC167 (your watch, MM reduced). Its a marketing attempt to see how far one will go with Orient. The Kamasu is their best overall value watch. Almost perfect in every box check, and hundreds below what Seiko offers at this price. You hit this review right on the button!! Take Care.
Great review, disappointing to see Orient offering a flawed piece for that price. Totally agree they did well for what they’re going for from a design perspective but the finishing and material choice is too dated for my tastes. I think I’d be far happier with a Kamasu or one of its cousins knowing I can grab 4 more for the same price as this OS
The end link fit is unacceptable at this price. I would expect that for around $200, but not at $1000. Taking a page out of Seikos book for increasing prices with the same poor quality
Orient Star has the quality of watches several times more expensive. People, of course, complain because there is no Swiss made. As if it would pay $ 3,000 and say that cheap xD
Hi Shane, great video as usual my friend. Good looking piece. But it does look very much like a Glycine Combat Sub, especially the hand set, dial and bezel. Also, too much text on the dial. And what's up with the end links!? Looking forward to your next video. Take care and stay safe.
You are making an unfortunate parallel between the Orient star and the Grand Seiko. If you know, there is a higher level of Orient star watches, the Royal Orient series. Check them out, there were quite a few models.
It's been almost a year since I made this, so forgive me but what parallel is that? Are you referring to referencing Orient Star to Orient is similar to Grand Seiko to Seiko? That's usually what some people have issues with when i do an orient Star video. Now I can't remeber what I specificly said here, but I usually clarify it's not on the same quality level. It's just the easiest way to describe the relationship between the two brands to someone who may never have heard about it. As for Royal Orient, I've heard of them, but I thought they were discontinued a while ago. Like around 2010 or so.
This model is like a zebra in a herd of dive watch zebras. Its a black vanilla blah. I would've considered the 1st 1964. Someone at marketing in Orient may be forced to comment Hari-kari
Orients in general are great value (Kamasu, Defender, Bambino) but not all can be .... frankly at the $1000 price point I am looking away from Orient towards Swiss (Sinn, Christopher Ward, Longines etc.). Same reason people choose a Seiko over a Seiko homage with the same look and often better movement, milled clasp and sapphire crystal.
You can find the black dial one for around $900 but the teal one is being listed for as much as $1400. I really liked the 1st edition but when I saw that it was a limited edition I kinda lost all interest in it. I hate that they are doing the same thing as Seiko with their limited editions and raising the prices way beyond what any improvements have been made. With all that being said, I really like the teal dial.
I like orient, I really do, except for one thing, I know it`s nuts and my problem! I can NOT abide the shield with lions whatever above the Orient name, it ruins an other wise fine watch line, and I will not buy one because of this! My problem I know!. Now the Orient star 1964 does not have this on the dial, THANK GOODNESS, and it just improves the whole look of the watch, would I buy one?, no idea, I would need to get my sticky hands on one and have a look? If the other Orient models had the option of not having the shield??? well that could turn me in to a fanboy, though that`s dreaming I think? Onward and upwards people🤔🙂❤
I think the china recovery is going to take significantly longer than 6 months lol… These companies are probably just saying that so their stocks dont get absolutely crushed lol. Im pretty sure it’s going to get a lot uglier in the watch market. I’m sure those price hikes over the last few years aren’t helping things either 😂 Who knows, maybe they’ll get lucky and the projected economic growth in India by Wall Street will come to fruition to help bail these guys out lol.
I have zero love for this watch. It looks like something designed by committee and then funneled through finance to ensure everything was also made as cheaply as possible. A Casio Duro looks more cohesive.
I still like my Triton Neptune better. While nice I love the toolish nature of the watch. But man those endlinks killed it for me. That would of gone straight back...

Love Orient, I have 4 of them. Those 4 watches cost half of this watch so i'm on the fence about this one
Wow, the fit of the end-links is a DISGRACE!!! I literally shouted when Shane showed the wiggle.
Ummm Shane
@karlsenula9495 I'm not sure you read that right.😎
@@RelativeTime... think it was Shawn when I looked (likely a auto correct typo) and edited to Shane.
@@karlsenula9495 Oh ok... I thought you were making a joke like I was the one wiggling. 😄
@@karlsenula9495 Yea, it was, apologies...
The kamasu’s endlink doesn’t even wobble like that 🤣
The end links on my 1964 2nd edition don’t wobble like that either. I don’t know why the one in this review is so bad.
Its a nice watch but iv'e gotta agree with all said , $500>750 max as at a grand+ its fighting in a league where it needs lead in its gloves . Good full & honest review .
Thanks! The price might come down with time, but who knows.
Understand that I for one care as little as is possible about what haut horologists think or say. The Orient Star diver is hot!
The ice cream cone is far better than yet another Mercedes hand.
Seiko 62MAS SPB143J1 unfortunately also has play at the end of the links.
I have first version OS 1964 and end links move very little. I never noticed it until after your review
It's several times worse in your review.
Little while back this one (well, the blueish green one) blipped up on my radar. I like it, indeed reminds me of early vintage submersible dive watches. 😉
But indeed, if I'm buying an Orient, it's because I know, like with Seiko, I'm getting a whopper of a deal for not thaaat much.
Otherwise I would go for the Ocean Star Diver which is a great watch for the money with distinct looks and excellent lume.
yeah, but this is not homage of Submariner.
I think the technical term is "Jack Ball Hand."
Jack Ball? Maybe Jack in the Box head.
@Relative Time Oh sure, that's what I was referring to.
They should leave those loose fitting end links in 1964. Even at half the price I would be disappointed.
Take Care.
its nice i like it the price ouch too much... cheers
Adore Orient Star but prefer the Gen 1
Great review, disappointing to see Orient offering a flawed piece for that price. Totally agree they did well for what they’re going for from a design perspective but the finishing and material choice is too dated for my tastes. I think I’d be far happier with a Kamasu or one of its cousins knowing I can grab 4 more for the same price as this OS
Love a good Orient. I've had a few bambinos in the past. They're a bit expensive now, the new ones, but maybe they will drop in price.
Good video :)
Thanks! It's been a while since I looked at the bambinos. I should probably see if I can find a good deal on one of the smaller ones.
It's not aesthetically perfect, but because of sturdiness I bought one (1450 euro) /w spare silicone strap
The end link fit is unacceptable at this price. I would expect that for around $200, but not at $1000. Taking a page out of Seikos book for increasing prices with the same poor quality
Possible nickname for this piece: The Dudmariner
Nice enough, but for that sort of money I would look at Christopher Ward first
Orient Star has the quality of watches several times more expensive.
Those endlinks don't belong on a $200 watch let alone this one.
'Anti scratch-resisitant coating'. Wouldn't that make it scratchable?. 🤨🤣
Ummmmm... yes... 🤣
I think the 60s vintage inspired diver is a little overdone by now. Even with the power reserve i dont think this is unique enough.
Those endlinks are unacceptable.
ABSOLUTELY CORRECT Karl!! People are stuck on Brand Identification!
The price point on this watch is to high!!
I don't even think it's a $500 watch..a little bit better than the ray 2...a couple upgrades I think it's more of a $300 watch
Onward and upwards people🤔🙂❤
Excelente pieza, pero por su precio y esas falencias y carencias que señalas, mejor compro un Oris Aquis o Longines Hydroconquest.
For a grand that end link would leave a very sour taste in my mouth and definitely call for a return
For people who can’t afford a submariner. 😢
No one like Orient Saturation Diver 300M
micro-scratches = patina 😸
True. There is a point where you stop worring about it.
Rubbish to have LE OS, they are coming as seiko brand in diff color
One doesn't necessarily follow the other! why not have a low end of the high end! I will take my sixty dollar Invicta 1953 anytime!
I think the china recovery is going to take significantly longer than 6 months lol… These companies are probably just saying that so their stocks dont get absolutely crushed lol. Im pretty sure it’s going to get a lot uglier in the watch market. I’m sure those price hikes over the last few years aren’t helping things either 😂
Who knows, maybe they’ll get lucky and the projected economic growth in India by Wall Street will come to fruition to help bail these guys out lol.
I have zero love for this watch. It looks like something designed by committee and then funneled through finance to ensure everything was also made as cheaply as possible. A Casio Duro looks more cohesive.
not at that price. San Martin is higher quality than that turd LMAO
Not worth it sorry . Thanks for your efforts!
That's why I do it. Just so people can know before they spend their money.
The price point of this watch is too high!!
I love your Chess set, with the Olmec heads as peons.
I still like my Triton Neptune better. While nice I love the toolish nature of the watch. But man those endlinks killed it for me. That would of gone straight back...
Sorry Orient..that dial does look empty..yeap
