However, Robin Walker's book When We Ruled, presented a holistic view with king Henry of Portugal as the person who stated Africans were good to be slaves in 1444 because they could not blend into society as the indentured servants did. He gives a global view of where the enslaved were shipped to as well for impact.

I am of English descent (though not American), and this was an eye opener to me. Namely the theme that the economic needs drove the social morals & ideology, something I have observed during my own time, but had never thought to apply to previous epochs. It's a cohesive theory. I know exactly the kinds of people who act like this today, "I want X, so what if Y were true so I could have X while.still being moral...". The Red Sea slave trade dates from the 1st century when Arabs enslaved Africans and trafficked them across the Red Sea to Arabia and Yemen. In 1400 the Portugese took advantage of the existing infrastructure and bought Slaves for Brazil. 200 years later the British invented the transatlantic Slave trade. I'd love if you done a piece on the Arab Slave trade as it is not widely reported in the west.

Throughout history people have compared their group with other groups and realized that they were inferior or superior based on the civilization in the advancement of these groups. Africans did this as well amongst their different groups. Some African areas were more advanced than others some had higher civilizations than others and naturally thought themselves superior. I learned about some of these points in college and other points made later in life through reading, documentaries, etc. A few interesting points made was the African not having allyship with their governments/kingdoms for protection, the cultural attitudes of Europeans to not be inhumane to other Europeans, and the African could survive the infections and diseases that were succumbing Native Americans.

All of the information you provided apply to the those countries and nationalities in the trade. The gun played a major role in their success. The gun is highly revered even to this day.

Just to add, Portuguese were the first ones in the 15th century and the last ones out of the Transatlantic Slave Trade in the 19th century. I say that not to absolve the Spanish, English, French and Dutch Europeans just that the Portuguese were the first ones. That being said, Ireland was England’s first colony. The Anglo Saxons aka proto English invaded the British Isles from what is now Northern Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands after the Romans withdrew in the 5th century.

The slaves were mainly imported to the tropical plantation regions, which were not attractive to european peasants/immigrants due to the climate and high mortality caused by tropical diseases, many native indians would rather die than to be enslaved therefore they started importing slaves from Africa to work on the plantations. Of course it was also more profitable to use slave labour than to pay for it. In Brazil the mortality of the slaves was higher and the life expectancy lower compared to the US, but the emancipation rate, mixing and social mobility was also much higher, therefore they kept importing new slaves while in the US it was developed a slave breeding system and stopped importing since the early 1800's. By the late 1800's the USA had more than the double of the number of slaves than Brazil, 1.5 million in BR according to the 1872 census and around 4 million in the US in 1865. Despite having imported much less slaves, there are around 40 million black americans while only around 15 million black brazilians, the difference is that Brazil has of course a much larger number of mixed race people, typically of African, European and often native ancestry.

Didn't the Portuguese play a large part in the slave the slave trade. At least in the purchase and shipping to the Americas. The north african arabs were also very involved in the slave trade. The english were the end consumer. The way I understand it there was a "supply chain" in the slave trade with many participants, including other sub-saharan africans. A sad chapter in human history that continues to this day in various forms.

However, Robin Walker's book When We Ruled, presented a holistic view with king Henry of Portugal as the person who stated Africans were good to be slaves in 1444 because they could not blend into society as the indentured servants did. He gives a global view of where the enslaved were shipped to as well for impact.

I am of English descent (though not American), and this was an eye opener to me. Namely the theme that the economic needs drove the social morals & ideology, something I have observed during my own time, but had never thought to apply to previous epochs.
It's a cohesive theory. I know exactly the kinds of people who act like this today, "I want X, so what if Y were true so I could have X while.still being moral...". My only criticism is that you assign a conscious deviousness to it, whereas I imagine these elite people are able to convince themselves effectively and these beliefs become sincere.

The Red Sea slave trade dates from the 1st century when Arabs enslaved Africans and trafficked them across the Red Sea to Arabia and Yemen. In 1400 the Portugese took advantage of the existing infrastructure and bought Slaves for Brazil. 200 years later the British invented the transatlantic Slave trade.

It was the Portuguese and Spanish mostly, not the English. They chose them because other black Africans offered prisoners of war (within Africa) for sale for cheap.

I learned about some of these points in college and other points made later in life through reading, documentaries, etc. A few interesting points made was the African not having allyship with their governments/kingdoms for protection, the cultural attitudes of Europeans to not be inhumane to other Europeans, and the African could survive the infections and diseases that were succumbing Native Americans.

Just to add, Portuguese were the first ones in the 15th century and the last ones out of the Transatlantic Slave Trade in the 19th century. I say that not to absolve the Spanish, English, French and Dutch Europeans just that the Portuguese were the first ones. That being said, Ireland was England’s first colony. The Anglo Saxons aka proto English invaded the British Isles from what is now Northern Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands after the Romans withdrew in the 5th century.

The slaves were mainly imported to the tropical plantation regions, which were not attractive to european peasants/immigrants due to the climate and high mortality caused by tropical diseases, many native indians would rather die than to be enslaved therefore they started importing slaves from Africa to work on the plantations. Of course it was also more profitable to use slave labour than to pay for it. In Brazil the mortality of the slaves was higher and the life expectancy lower compared to the US, but the emancipation rate, mixing and social mobility was also much higher, therefore they kept importing new slaves while in the US it was developed a slave breeding system and stopped importing since the early 1800's. By the late 1800's the USA had more than the double of the number of slaves than Brazil, 1.5 million in BR according to the 1872 census and around 4 million in the US in 1865.
Despite having imported much less slaves, there are around 40 million black americans while only around 15 million black brazilians, the difference is that Brazil has of course a much larger number of mixed race people, typically of African, European and often native ancestry.
The Irish were originally black too and this can be researched, also the etymology of the word leprechaun includes a word for Pygmy but so-called "mainstream scholars" debunk the so-called myth of St. Patrick's massacre of the African pygmies(dwarfs) in Ireland

There is a book called “whence the black Irish”, which infers that the black Irish transported were dark skinned folks to begin with, which is why they were sent to the West Indies.. Perhaps the Irish once they got to the Caribbean, were reclassified over time and then renamed like the Indians to the caste name of “black” and then told they were from Africa to steal their history.
my family is from Barbados and our last name is Browne which is Irish. Most have freckles , green ,hazel or light brown eyes and rust color hair. and we are as black as we can be. RiRi also

Because we were cheap! There were millions of us for the having at a negligible cost. Slaves were also a self-replenishing resource, as labor and tradable assets. I think reaching for "cultural" reasons is a false road. Slavery was economic before it was ideological. It wasn't "the English" engaging in the slave trade; it was businessmen, making quantitative decisions.

But I would like to suggest an alternative persective : always remember England in particular was first conquered by the Roman Empire .( the original slave master ) Many white europeans were enslaved over centuries by one of the most highly trained and well eqipped armies in ancient times. Didn't the Portuguese play a large part in the slave the slave trade. At least in the purchase and shipping to the Americas. The north african arabs were also very involved in the slave trade. The english were the end consumer. The way I understand it there was a "supply chain" in the slave trade with many participants, including other sub-saharan africans. A sad chapter in human history that continues to this day in various forms.
