People make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to make videos and TV shows that aren't anywhere near as interesting or informative as this production. Best thing I've watched in a long time. Mad respect.
I learned more about the versatility of a 5 gallon bucket than I ever imagined watching this video! Shoestring is definitely a treasure and a University of information and practical experience.
Your train and yard knowledge makes me think have worked for a railroad. My dad was a switchmen at inland steel in east Chicago, Indiana and knew the same stuff you are talking about. I really enjoy the work you do.

Well Shoestring you're certainly living the dream. As a young girl working for the railroad I was fascinated by Hobo's and I so wanted to do that but women have a tough time out in the wild. I love your video's and I commented on one how you seemingly owned the "yard" but then I watched one of your video's where you were really worried about being seen. So I guess you do have to be very careful. I would love to ride the rails with you and your experience as it's been a lifelong dream for me. You're definitely a pro at this game. Thanks for the video's and just know there are a ton of folks that would love to be in your backpack to share the experience. Best regards, Lisa
I just started watching your videos a short time ago and I am hooked! It is amazing your knowledge of the railroads, the geography as well as life skills and you are always so willing to share your knowledge! Thank you! Looking forward to watching some of your older videos as well as your new ones!
My grandfather was an inspector for the Southern Pacific Railroad up in Minnesota. This was in the 1920s thru the 1950s. He used to crawl underneath the trains and inspect the parts of the engine to make sure they were okay. During the depression that was a great job during those hard times. He worked seven days a week twelve hours a day, fifty weeks a year and he never complained because jobs paying that kind of money were almost impossible to find.
good video. reminds me of a hobo story from when I worked for NS in Spartanburg, SC. we were assigned to a remote switching yard with a small locker room that had crew bunks in it. a older hobo came along and started hanging out with us each day. we gave him a few dollars and brought him sandwiches to eat and let him sleep in one of the bunks. one day he showed up with a bottle of wine and got very intoxicated and starting verbally abusing us and even threw some rocks at us. after while he passed out so we pulled a empty boxcar bound for Birmingham Ala. up to the locker room and stuffed him inside it closed the door but did not latch it and sent it out on the next southbound train which arrived shortly. when he sobered up he was well on his way to Alabama. several weeks later he returned and was mad as a hornet and started verbally abusing us again, so I reminded him of what happened the last time he pulled this stunt and told him "don't bite the hand that feeds you " or next time we will send you to Canada. .
Shoot the bastard and throw em in a ditch or river. Everyone loves to feel pity over the deadbeats. They are just like a raccoon - playing on your sympathy until your guard is down and that's when you discover why hes a bum in the first place.

My grandpa was a German immigrant, he used to ride the rods. Back in the day cars were made light then beefed up underneath with truss rods. They went from up high by the axle to a truss saddle low in the middle, then back up to over the other axle. When the car would age and sag, they could tighten up those rods and pick the middle up and keep the deck flat. Those were the rods they would ride. There were two or four, side by side, that you could lay down on. It was a place the bulls could not reach while the train was moving. (His story to me)

10:10 is a track skate, not a chock. They are used to stop rolling cars that have been dropped or kicked into a clear track. Wheel chocks are wedge shaped with a long wooden handle and are used mostly in repair facilities for equipment that don't have operable hand brakes or to keep from having to set handbrakes.
Just discovered you...subscribed...my granddad was a track crew forman for the Santa Fe outa Cleburne Texas. He worked for them for 40 years,20s thru 60s.
Awesome Video Brother... Those rubber mats are used for giant paper rolls... They put them under the roll to help keep them from sliding... They use them in the Trucking Industry too...
The rods referred to with "riding the rods" were not brake rods, but TRUSS rods, used to brace cars with wooden frames. They did not move relative to the car. There were usually about four of them per car. They were no longer needed when cars began to be made out of steel.
The natural reverb effect at :30 is something studio engineers would kill for, and pay $100 for a program that could recreate it. That is some sweet sounding reverb. Someone needs to record their instrument or voice in there. Imagine John Bonham playing drums in it. Forget about When the Levee Breaks, that would sound HUGE
I chuckled when I saw the kratom. I've probably bought a kilo a mouth for the last five years, been trying to get off it the last two years. It can be a lifesaver for people with pain, depression and alcoholism. But the withdrawals can be really unbearable, it's sapped my ability to focus and it's taken a lot of pleasure out of life.
Back when ridin the rods was a thing they had big steel rods with turn buckles that pulled tension on the wooden side and end walls of the box cars. They laid boards across them and there was usually two rods on each side of the car
ChainsawN&W1218, interesting video, I remember, I know it's a movie but I remember them riding the rods in Emperor Of The North and what Ernest Borgnines character Shack done,I miss the hump yard at Shaffers Crossing in Roanoke.
