This is what Sting had to say in his lyrics book:
"In England our house is surrounded by barley fields, and in the summer it's fascinating to watch the wind moving over the shimmering surface, like waves on an ocean of gold. There's something inherently sexy about this sight, something primal, as if the wind were making love to the barley. Lovers have made promises here, I'm sure, their bonds strengthened by the comforting cycle of the seasons" (Sting 167).
This is one of the few songs that once you played it cannot stop listening and keep playing over and over again. Legend.
My dad passed away on April 9th 2019 and everytime I listen to this song and it takes me back to my childhood, where he drove me to school in our little blue 120y datsun, or when he would let me ride on his back when he took me to the beach and taught me how to swim. I remember him letting me have my way when my mom wouldn't, because I was always daddy's little girl. When he got his first and then second stroke, it was the toughest thing to see him go downhill health wise and I prayed and cried almost every night that God would not make me have to live through the pain of losing my dear father 😪. Fast forward a few years to 2019 when he became bedridden and I had to witness everyday as my once strong father dwindled down to bones and became so weak and totally immobile that he had to rely on my mom and I to take care of him. The last 3 weeks he stopped talking and was mostly in a comatose state. The night before he passed I sat next to his bedside and quietly sang into his ear. I felt him gently squeeze my hand 😪. Everytime I listen to this song, it brings back a rush of memories from my dad, both the good times and the last of his days so it's kind of bittersweet. I hoped that time would stop so that he wouldn't have to go away....it still feels so unreal to me. I just hope that one day I can get to see him again and I can be with my dad again 😪

I can only say to you that time is an earth's matter. God is out of time. Rely on Lord Jesus for you scars and your void in your heart and He will fill it promptly. Your father is in a better place where no sickness no pain no tears no bitterness no suffering are on the list. I pray for your scars to heal soon

5 year ago we moved to a new city. im 17 now and i spend my whole childhood there and my father used this song on every child video from me or my sisters. listening to this again makes me cry.

Reminds me of those cold and chilly autumn nights when I was in marching band and we would come back from competition and I would just listen to calm old music on our way back to our hometown. I think this song has a different meaning to me right now. I left my home for another country 13 years ago at the age of 3. I just left home again after a short visit and I made some beautiful memories during my time there. Now I'm feeling really sad because my stay there just made me realise how much I'm missing. I'd give anything to walk in the fields of gold again...
