This is awesome. That’s my family’s old boat. My grand father had it built in 1967 and name it after my grandmother, Emily Ann. It was in the family until about 2000. Good to see her again and glad that the name’s been kept.
I grew up drooling over one in Corpus Christi Bay. It was the boat to beat back in the late 60's early 70's. The owner was quite a character, too! Great video as usual!
Scott, you nail these boat tours. FINALLY a sailor doing a walk through and review of a ... wait for it... sailboat. The key things you hit on are all the important things that the UA-cam University sailors reviewing boats hve no idea of. One thing about the 40 I see in the view that went unsing is less steep companionway ladder. I think it was the Ericson that was near vertical.. My last boat was a friggin fire escape masquerading as a companionway so I know how much nicer shallow incline is. Also of note is Liz Clark and her voyaging around the pacific in a C40. Yup great boat and great review, thank you!!! Talking about great boats for PHRF around San Diego - SC27, Santana 525, Olsen 30, Merit 25, Ranger 33 and 37, Morgan 27 and if you can find one the 42 Mark2, Great racer cruisers from the old school the fleet of Choate's boats..There's one or two Ericson 46's around and a real nice 39 out at R&R down by Humphries.. totally redone looking sharp. Would Taiwan Turkey's be in this or are staying "racer/cruiser"? anyway I ramble...heck its boats. do more! love yoru videos..
LOVE THIS!! Such a great, easy-to-watch review. We just crawled around a Cal28 that we want someone to bring back to life. Classic solid core fiberglass hulls... probably good for another 50 years!
Really do enjoy watching the Sailboat Tours. Back in the day, I used to do walk-through visits of sailboats boats moored at new and used boat sales docks. As a result, I have owned probably too many one design, IOR, and PHRF boats. I have a fondness for designs by Sparkman & Stevens having owned a Yankee 30 Mark 3 and a Swan 38.
It is so great to have Scott walk us through these boats.. Like the background he gives on the boats..,,Love the reviews!!! How about the Dehler 34...1986?? IOR oh yea.. Duke
Speaking of classic Trans Pac racers, Come up to Superior and have a gander at a classic Olson 40, the Screaming O. Also, that was a beauty and the best boat tour I have seen on these you tubes. We will take you out on Superior for a fun sleigh ride!
Scot, great look at the Cal 40! My father and I had one in the mid 60's and really loved racing the boat. Turned on a dime with the spade rudder, great in light air and a super exciting (fast) downwind surfing hull! Suggest you review the Ericson 39 which was also a light air terror.
Thank you Scott this channel is great. Cal 40 trivia The house is perfect but it looks right because the roof is more than a little concave in profile, it's easy to see if you sight down the side, and Cal boats that have the mast step hump across the cabin also have a mondo galvanized Iron "I" beam inside that tunnel, that the bulkheads are tied to. Many Cal 40's have been remodeled but this is as close to stock as it gets.
Just like my old Cal 24 down below. I have standing headroom, too, as long as I don't get off my knees, and slouch. My head is a porta potty below the V berth, supplemented by Pee Jars. BTW these boats are FAST in light airs. I accompanied the fleet out of San Pedro during the 50th anniversary of their Transpac Win...with a fleet of 10 Cal 40's and I had to run my 4HP OB wide open to keep up with them.
These videos are rad. Some tribute to the Santa Cruz ULDB era would be sweet? Olson 30, Moore 24, Express 27/37, and of course the Wizard's offerings (SC27, 40, 50, 52, 70). Any or all of 'em, I'm subscribed!
Loving your retro series. Boats with character. How about an S&S 34 like Morning Cloud of Sybney Hobart fame and Ella's Pink Lady. I understand they've completed more solo circumnavigations than any other boat. I have the smaller sister the S&S 30, made as the PJ-30 in the US and they were also built in Oz as the Swarbrick and Swarbrick 30, after the moulds were sold when the Aquafibre went bust in the early-70s. Loads of classics / retro possibilities here in the UK too. Come visit post Covid!
Scot. There is or was a Calkins 50 at SDYC last time I was there. I think it's berthed in front of the clubhouse. I'd love to see you do a tour of that boat.
Cascade, Jerry Milgram There is a story here The New York Yacht Club & SORC found ways of defeating this boat, but it gave them heart attacks. It was built in Vaitses yard in Mattapoisett by Milgram maybe even with assistance from Walter Greene.
Love the #retroboat vids a lot. You could have said William "Bill" Lapworth's name from the onset but you eventually gave credit to where it is due! I own one of the most awesome one off Bill Lapworth cutter sailors ever built so a little touchy when it comes to Lapworth. On Instagram @SY_TITANIA Keep up the great work!
@@thomastunberg4887 I heard from a guy who wins lots of races with his OG Cal 30..it surfs too!...as does my Cal 24. With strong winds she will scream.
Any known shortcomings? the Cal 25 has a rudderpost that can break in half, SS chainplates can dissolve in rainwater (that's why some experienced sailors distrust SS).
the Washington State Ferry system learned the shortcomings of SS when it was used for the sprinkler system on a new ferry after a couple of years it sprung leaks all over. I welded my friend's '68 Cal 25 rudder post, bu if I were to do it again I would build up the fiberglass on the outside of the rudder, instead.
I'm going to look at '69 CAL sloop (not cruising). Anyone know of any odd-ball things I should look for (beyond the compression post)? Also, does the NOT cruising CAL have a specific name? I run into the cruising version 90% of the time. I'm 6'5" but I still don't like the cabin house.
Would love to see a review of a Chris White Atlantic 57 www.chriswhitedesigns.com/a57-recent as well as the Corsair F-24. Only thing to make the videos better would be to actually go sailing on the boats after explaining all of the unique characteristics. Keep up the good work!

Sweet boat 🚢
They don't make them like the Cal 40 anymore. It's a CLASSIC.

A Cal 40 from Bellingham, WA named Kismet won a lot of Vic-Maui races
we did the cal 40

oddly, there aren't too many of them here. might be able to do a santa cruz 50 and 52...
@@SailingAnarchyUSA Come visit Santa Cruz :). Lots of 27s here, plus the other sizes.
Santa Cruz 27 in depth, sails legend.

Express 37 next please!

our goal is to take the show on the road... still building it up to get to that point!

Nice job
thank you
i'm partial to IOR sailboats , in particular Baltics, Swans, etc. Cal 40 was a boat i looked at before i bought my Baltic 37.
Cal 40 is a CCA boat, not IOR
@@Tromsosail ok i was referring to swans, baltics just noting i did look at a Cal 40
Loved the retro boat reviews! I have an Ericson 35-2 (Commotion hull number 223) Have you considered the Islander 36 for review?
I enjoyed this as I am looking for a boat with this length and sailing qualities. I doubt that I would find many in Massachusetts, though!
One for sale in Oyster bay LI.
Hi Scott. Enjoying the videos a lot. Are there any CF27’s left in San Diego? They were pretty good in their day.... TJ
What about a MORC boat like the S2 7.9? Next year is year 40 for the class.
Great video. Anyone know where to get a sunshade for the cockpit like that?

Add 1971 Transpac overall...Argonaut, sailed by Jon Andron
Van den Stadt Pioneer 9, mass produced fin and spade rudder in 1960 , probably not many examples in California.
How about a review of the Wyliecat 44?
Can you find a Contessa or one of the Frers Swans, please?
there is a nice swan 42 here at the club. i am on that too!
I was prejudiced against the cals growing up I sailed on and raced on a full keel boat. I believe it was because we always lost to them.
Those "upper settees" are actually called pilot berths.

Haha @ your T-shirt. 😂🤣😂
How about doing the Cal 2-30?
If you can find one...
