I delegated team captains for various teams and took the role of team captain on the Rocket League team. We competed in the High School eSports League (HSEL) and it led to some of my best memories of my life. We ended up winning nationally in 2019 and the feeling is indescribable. not a RL player but i am team captain of an ow2 team that was one game away from getting to nationals.
i was a fairly reserved kid throughout my freshman year, but the one thing i could connect to people with was through gaming. Then comes an announcement that an esports club was forming and competing in the very beginning of my sophomore year. I went to the meet and i saw a few people i previously was friends with before kinda just falling out because of my own reservedness. A season goes by, and i find myself talking more and more, not only just in this club but in school and outside of school too. seasons go by of my team making it to playoffs but getting wiped first game until this previous one. i really wanted to make a memory, so i finally leaned into my role as the team captain. coaching my friends, playing comp with them outside of school, and meeting up in person quite often. i didnt think that the me 2-3 years ago could do this. and we just kept winning, and i had the most fun i'd had in years. each loss didn't hurt, it didn't sting, it just made me realize that *we* needed to do better. like i said earlier, we were one game away from state. but im fine with losing because i had fun. so much fun. I think a very understated fact is that after the pandemic, people lost social skills, me included. alot of people retreated into their shells that they just managed to crawl out of. But new opportunities like this are an amazing way to get people to learn to socialize again, building up from zero. corny as it sounds, im going into my senior year a totally new person because of it, and i'm experiencing that classic 'best time of your life' that people boast about. i'm jealous that i didnt get to experience it sooner, but glad that people will be able to enjoy it for generations to come.

The fact that students of all ages can compete and can be cheered on by their school at this level is unreal to me. We never had a crowd when I played for my high school back in the day, but I got a crowd for one of the RL conference championships that my college won last semester, so that's still cool. 4 years ago in 2020, my freshman year in HS, I helped start my school's esports program, and it very quickly became our most successful program at my school, started in Rocket League, and now compete in a bunch of different games and I am staying back as a coach while in college, and I could not be happier.

i'm 30 years old, and i've been playing RL for just over 3 years. When i was 15, in highscool in my country, i was always with the other geeks, we played on the only "good" PC our "students house" had at the time, and the other students didn't like us. I am very glad those kids in detroit got to experience this, full support, and lasting memories !

This made me so happy. I remember being heavily made fun of in school for being a gamer. Our community hasn't always been accepted by the mainstream. I'm glad I was able to crawl so that kids now can run ❤

Please don’t stop recording videos. Please don’t end hype to a game I’m afraid of dying. I used to play it in this bitter relationship I was in. I hit champ on my brother in law’s ps5 while visiting. I’m restarting with a new job/apt and just WAITING to get a ps5. CANT fkn wait to play rocket league. It better not be in utter disarray

Sunless, you have the best documentaries. I typically hate documentaries, but your cinematic style you use and the sunless sarcasm comes through every once in a while, and it's awesome. You can also tell that you're just a good dude. When you talked about how gaming is about having FUN, it really makes you stop and realize that games like Rocket League are made to be fun, and if I'm getting tilted I should just get off for the day 😂

This was such a great story that I never would have known about without your incredible production and story telling. Thank you my friend.
On the part of "E sports aren't a sport. Blah blah" my wife used to be the same. She would always ask why I watch gaming content and RLCS and never understood it and thought it was stupid saying "they shouldn't call it E SPORTS as it isn't a sport and is just video games". I built her a computer, got her hooked on RL/gaming, then watched RLCS with her once she understood the game, and now she is more obsessed than me. Lol. She was like "I get it now!!! This is awesome!". E sports is incredible, to anyone who tries to dismiss it, I just laugh at. What an unfortunate bubble you must live in to not try and understand something that has such a wild market cap that soo many people are into. If it isn't your cup of tea or you don't understand it, just move along. Don't try to put people down because you're stubborn, ignorant, and stuck in your ways.

You're a master storyteller, Sunless. Way to do it, Stephen. It's crazy how it's spreading. Just checked back in with an old friend who lives in my old college town and she told me they now have an entire esports program and a few state championships in Overwatch. Like....what?? Where was this shit when we were in school? :D
