      Quick question.... I bought my spiced rum 92 proof, is that too strong? I wasn't sure what to get. Thanks so much ❤️

      Quality of vanilla beans plays a great role in providing the best flavour to any recipe.
      Have a look at these Extra Large Vanilla Beans, they provide a unique flavour.

    Ich nehme eine trockene Vanilleschote und 200g Zucker, breche die trockene Vanilleschote in 3-4 Stücke in den Zucker und zermahle alles zu einem feinen Pulver. Sofort benutzbar und klumpt nicht in hoher Luftfeuchtigkeit. Unbegrenzt haltbar.

    I've had good luck getting vanilla beans at the local health food store in the bulk spice area. MUCH less expensive than at the grocery store.

    What would be your thoughts on which way is better, to do the vanilla sugar this way or to dehydrate the beans and powder them and add to the sugar? Does it keep fine when you add them wet? I would guess the flavor would go farther the way you did it.?.

    • @OurGabledHome
      @OurGabledHome  2 роки тому +3

      Good question! I think you would get more out of dehydrating, grinding, and adding the vanilla beans to the sugar than infusing. Since sugar is a preservative, the beans keep just fine in it 😃 ~ Anja

    Please tell me how to use vanilla sugar in a cookie recipe using two cup sugar. Thank you.

      You can simply exchange 1tsp to 1TBSP of sugar for the same amount of vanilla sugar. Hope this helps!

    Do you ever remove the vanilla beans from the extract?

    • @OurGabledHome

      I just leave them in there but you can take them out once you are happy with your extract. Hope this helps ~ Anja

    I have always found that you have to dry the vanilla bean first before adding raw vanilla beans. In a couple weeks I would have a sugar brick if you don’t dry the beans first.

      That is interesting! My sugar stays nice and loose with fresh vanilla beans. Sometimes we need to adjust to a particular sugar, vanilla bean, ambient humidity etc. Thank you so much for sharing and commenting 💛 ~ Anja

      Here is a tip for you. Take 1 cup sugar and 1 dry Vanilla bean. Break the bean in 3-4 pieces, add the sugar and grind to a powder. Keeps indefinite and won't clump together. Don't dry the bean in the oven as high heat makes it bitter. Air dry is best but may take awhile.

      @@andreaa.1696 Thanks for the tip, I made vanilla sugar yesterday, as per the video instructions, but next time I make vanilla sugar I’m going to try your way because it uses the whole bean and seems less wasteful.

    Hallo Anja, würde gern das Vanille Extract machen. Aber Spiced Rum hab ich hier noch nicht gesehen. Gibt es das in Deutschland überhaupt, und wenn ja, wie heißt das hier?

    • @OurGabledHome
      @OurGabledHome  2 роки тому +1

      Also, hier bekommt man den oft als Cpt. Morgan, aber Du kannst auch ganz normalen Rum oder sogar Vodka nehmen. Ich mag nur halt den Geschmack vom spiced rum 😊 ~ Anja

    How and typically in what do you use the vanilla extract in the Rum? I mean, everything you put it in is going to taste like Rum.....

    • @OurGabledHome
      @OurGabledHome  2 роки тому +3

      Yes, I actually like the more complex rum taste but you can make make the vanilla extract with vodka, too, if you prefer a "cleaner" taste. Hope this helps 😊 ~ Anja

    6:56pm. Is the rum actually alcohol? Or just a rum flavoured substitute?

      You can use it in any recipe as a straight substitute for the vanilla extract, especially in those you don't want to add extra liquid to. I hope this helps 😊 ~ Anja
