When the Yankees first signed Matsui we as fans were under the impression he was a power hitter with bad plate discipline. He was actually the opposite. Very solid contact hitter who could do a bit of everything at the plate. He was absolutely on fire this World Series. The Phillies couldn’t get him out.
Hideki was a great player for the Yankees. If he played his entire career here, we might have be talking about him being a Hall of Famer. He was that good.
This was such a great season never forget it I was actually able to see a Yankees win as an adult and not a child and got to celebrate in Times Square w a bunch of Yankee fans and New Yorkers it felt so nice we all felt as one in New York that day and I’ll never forget it
2009 was such a different year for me. I was going through a lot but when the yankees won the world series I was so happy that they won. Thank you Yankees. I'm a yankees fan for life. :)
Same 2009 was a bad year for me I hated high school, and I lost my grandparents but seeing the Yankees win a World Series that year made me feel better.
this will forever be my fav moment in sports... seeing my yanks back to glory for the firs time in my life.. i was like 10 years old when this game was played
This 2009 seems like just yesterday. After all these years, still bring happy tears. Wonderfully bringing back memories of the other players on that team- Swisher, Cano, Jeter, Texiera & on & on. Let’s not forget ARod. Truthfully, this beast took them to this final series, agree? Been waiting ever since. Need more rings here!!!
No way. Look at Pedro's performance with the Expos (1997) and the Red Sox (1999-2000-2002). Stats vs the Yankees: 32 G, 11-11 record, 3.20 ERA, 216.2 IP, 170 H, 63 BB, 261 K, 17 HR, 1.08 WHIP.
We had a great supporting cast behind Matsui in that World series. The "Cap" Jeter as usual was clutch having the most hits in the series and great OBP, Damon also hitting a hot bat with a great OBP, A-rod hit well with 6 RBIs and great OBP, Posada hit well too while adding 5 RBIs. Matsui well, he destroyed the Phillies, driving in 8 RBIs with an OBP of .643 and batting average of .615...literally turned into Godzilla. We could have taken them out in 5 games with just a bit better luck.
Yeah it’s like he was calling a spring training game or something. I will say he got better in the last decade (excluding 2011 since he had a procedure on his vocal chords or something like that so he gets a pass). He’s been showing a lot more enthusiasm in big moments in both baseball and football. I think he finally understands that the majority of the people watching the game aren’t actually at the game and he needs to replicate that same energy that’s been shown in the game into his calls.
Ahhh... fond memories of those good ol days! Can’t believe it’s been 10 years & we still haven’t win another one after that one. It’s time to bring it back in 2020!!!!!
Matsui was locked in. I got to go to game and man what a fuckin game. Burnett pitched a gem that night and Matsui blasted a 3 run homer if im not mistaken.
He was completely in the zone. Almost like when Michael Jordan would just take a game over. Matsui was absolutely locked in. It was amazing to watch it live back then.
Pedro had so many quality pitches hit . He had some bad luck. When he had his old velocity wouldn't have happened. Still awesome Yankees pulled this off.
Last Worls Series title for great Yankees team 2009.Was at a bar with co workers from Radio City watching historic game and last title for the Cour Four.
Hopefully, this year. I'd like to see Gary Sanchez sustain his current wrath, Luke Voight to stay healthy, and our pitching to continue to flourish. Cluber needs to come back strong, when he does. Just like he was before going on the 'il'. Tough year though with Boston and Tampa Bay. And, Toronto. But, we can do it!
Charlie Manuel blew this series for the Phillies. He should have pitched the struggling Cole Hamels in Game 2, since Philadelphia already won Game 1 in NY and didn't really need to win Game 2. That would have saved Pedro Martinez for Game 3 in Philadelphia. Assuming he pitches the same as he did in Game 2, the Phils probably would have won Game 3 to go up 2-1. Instead, Hamels blows an early Phillies lead and the Yankees go up 2-1. Game 3 was huge for this series. This series was the beginning of the Phillies underachieving the next 5 years when they were the best team in the NL and maybe all of baseball, but only 1 WS in 2008 to show for it.
From Japan,I agree very much. In Philadelphia,Matsui was pinch hitter, not full time. So Manuel should have use Pedro Martinez only in Philadelphia. But,maybe Phillies had few good pitchers,so Manuel had to use Pedro two games in this series. Finally,Matsui's skillful HR in Game2 made himself into Godzilla in NY until end of this series. Sorry for poor English.
I was 2 when this happened, I'm waiting for the time I can actually experience the yanks winning, the closest I've gotten was when my second favorite braves won this year
Matsui one of the greatest Yankees of all time
Damn right. I miss him on the team. He was all business.
I had almost forgotten how much of a beast that dude was.
He was our last world series mvp
Okay, you got me. When I saw the name Matsui, I immediately thought of Irabu.
GODzilla
Matsui held it down for us.
So did Johnny damon
I might forget my friends name in highschool , but I will never forget the name of hideki matsui even if I spelled it wrong

@MANCHESTER UNITED dude shut up and stop shitting up every baseball video
I don’t think these clips could be any more out of order than they already are

LOL. "Yankees Media" indeed.
I thought I had a stroke at the end because I had no idea what the duck was happening
He stole the end
Yeah it ruined the video
Matsui was the hero of this Championship.
James Vs. Movies I would’ve guessed that
became one of my favorite players after that

He certainly was. He got MVP, I believe.
The Phillies couldn’t get him out period. The ball probably looked like a beach ball to him all World Series. He was on fire. Absolutely raking

Very solid contact hitter who could do a bit of everything at the plate. He was absolutely on fire this World Series. The Phillies couldn’t get him out.
Extremely well put. We instead got a .290 hitter who had some pop. Such a great guy to stick in that number 5 hole
@SamPerez-y1j I don’t recall saying he was a top 25 player….🤣
Matsui hideki's highlight

Matsui was a killer in both WS he played in.
Yankees are the best sports brand in the world.
Matsui was so damn good I miss that man
What an incredible lineup
No matter what uniform he wore, Pedro Martinez was owned by the Yankees when it counted most! #WhosYourDaddy
No way. Look at Pedro's performance with the Expos (1997) and the Red Sox (1999-2000-2002). Stats vs the Yankees: 32 G, 11-11 record, 3.20 ERA, 216.2 IP, 170 H, 63 BB, 261 K, 17 HR, 1.08 WHIP.
@@pedrohenriquez1970 Pedro Martinez got owned in THIS World Series though. Especially by Matsui lol
BenGorilla ChristianDude he was like 40 though
@@thomaspaulgames77 True. But he still pitched well for the Phillies during the season though (in my opinion).
Nah no lie Perdo was a demon on the mound back in the day when he was on Boston but the Yankees knew this series that had to get on him quick
Andy Pettitte was the ultimate gamer. Every big game, he was the guy you wanted to give the ball to. Absolutely a Hall of Famer.
100% hof.

Godzilla was a monster in the WS.
i love yankees! from japan!
Why does the thumbnail show Jeter? It should show Matsui, the hero of the series.
Matsui in this series was God. I am proud as a Japanese!
Matsui always look really calm
🔥🔥🔥✨
@@BryanFiGs He was the calm and the storm. A classy guy, too.
He was unstoppable. We loved Matsui here in NYC. The Phillies could not get him out.

We love Matsui here in NY. Godzilla!
Listening to Joe Buck just kills it
He hates every Newyork team
Every announcement channel hates the Yankees except for yes network
I hated Buck so much. I’d much rather hear John Sterling on the radio call.

Seeing this right before the playoffs just got me more excited hope we get #28 this year
Nick swisher was the key to that World Series. It wasn’t his play, it was his clubhouse presence and antics keeping it light and everyone positive.
everyone talking about hideki but a-rod clutched up fr
Matsui couldn’t be stopped they had no answer for him.
He was completely in the zone. Almost like when Michael Jordan would just take a game over. Matsui was absolutely locked in. It was amazing to watch it live back then.
The video would be a lot better if they were in chronological order. Lazy editing
Might not have been a sweep, but the Yankees really took it to Philly in this series...and Matsui was on 🔥
Phillies vs Yankees greatest word series matchup of all time especially with the roster they had

Matsui got robbed of the Rookie of the Year title when he first came.
