My son at one year old sat on his cake 😂😂
We thought we’d do that cake smash that always seems to give cute photos of kids shovelling handfuls of cake into their little mouths, but my son had zero interest in eating the cake and was more interested in sitting on the cake, turning the cake into a pillow, laying his belly on the cake, and poking all the decorative sugar flowers into holes on the cake.
(It was a cheap store bought sponge cake I decorated in buttercream, so the point was to let him do whatever he wanted and just capture the photos)

Clients like this are a mystery to me. Why are they so uncompromising? Are they trying to get a cake for free? That's what I'm always thinking about people who throw tantrums over things that don't really matter in the end. The client in the story got a nice cake that's more fitting of the size of her party. I am super specific about what I want, so I would be extremely disappointed in that scenario as well. I wouldn't have reacted the same way, of course...but I would have wanted to pay for what I requested, not something else they decided for me without telling me.

@@destyniiskywalker exactly! I would’ve been so unhappy having to pay for something I didn’t want. I know the feeling of expecting one thing and receiving another. If there was an issue or concern about the size of the cake or a detail in the order the easiest thing to do would be to resolve the confusion before even starting on the cake.

    • @LordofFullmetal
      @LordofFullmetal 2 роки тому +66

@@destyniiskywalker The thing is, in this scenario what she wanted was not physically possible. Being "super specific" can be a bad thing sometimes, because you can't always HAVE exactly what you want and you are bound to be disappointed in those cases. For example - you cannot have a tall, three layer, ten inch cake that only serves forty. That is not going to happen.
Where the baker went wrong here, as she already said, was by not EXPLAINING "Hey, this isn't actually how cake size works, I can't physically do this. Here's what I can do, which of these options do you prefer?". That is all she could have done differently. She was never going to be able to give the customer exactly what she wanted.

The many horror stories of moms having meltdowns over their kids cake. 😅 I remember one woman who chose a pink & purple flower design but told me to make it purple & orange. Told her it was a bold choice & wouldn’t look as good as the original. No issues when she picked it up but apparently I went to college with her friend who posted photos of the cake & party. I liked the post assuming their party was awesome but the mom recognized me & took it upon herself to comment all over our mutual friend’s post that the cake I made was the ugliest thing she ever ordered even though it was how she asked it to look. 😬 I had to block the mom cause she started harassing me online. 😒

One of the things I love about you, Mimo, is you are totally upfront with us and you tell it like it is. Whether you're admitting your own mistakes or faults or someone else's. You are not mean or snarky, you don't say this freakin B or anything of THAT nature when referring to somebody else's faults or mistakes.
But you don't pull your punches. Everyone has faults and everyone makes mistakes. When an adult makes mistake and they realize it or it's pointed out to them they apologize and fix it to the best of their ability. That's what adults do. And when somebody else makes a mistake or shows a fault, we should realize that everyone does it and have compassion. If compassion is not possible at least don't take them to task for such a human condition. And I have to admit that blue fondant on the cake looked beautiful!! Mimo, I would gladly eat any mistake you baked!

I do understand in some instances civility is difficult. When somebody made a horrible remark on Mimo's page about wearing a hijab, I believe I was less than civil to more than one commenter. I have people come in all the time and point at a cake that says "1/4 sheet" right on the label and call it a "1/2 sheet." Or I'll make an order for a full sheet and when they come to pick it up say "That's way too big" and come to find out they thought our 1/2 sheets were called full sheets and the person taking the order didn't tell them a full sheet feeds 40-80 people. It’s very helpful if you to share these experiences to help others avoid problems we have, and that wouldn’t happen if you also avoided any accountability (because how would we know what to do or say differently, if you acted like you’re infallible)? Everyone is fallible, but it’s brave of you to share! It’s also very validating to know we’re not the only ones. Also - no small thing - learning how to order properly and communicate what we want!

"Do you want a stove or do you want a range oven?"
    "I don't know."
"Was it a gas stove or an electric stove?"
"I don't know. I just remember it was a really good deal."
"Do you remember the make of the stove?"
    "No."
"Do you know what color it was?"
    "Not really."
"Do you know how many burners it had?"
    "No."
"Do you know the model it was?"
    "No."
"Do you remember when the sale was?"
"It was a few months ago."
"Could it have been the last couple of weeks in November?" This conversation was in the spring.
"Maybe. Do you have it in stock?"

o gosh i has an irate mom as well. sent photos, she loved it. came to fetch the cake. firstly i usually load the cakes into the customer's car myself but this lady just walked into my property and i found her at my front door. i wanted to be polite so i didnt make an issue of it. she followed me inside and watched me take the cake out of the fridge. still happy with her 2 tier buttercream cake with custom toppers. the next morning she berated me with calls telling me i ruined her daughters 1st birthday because the cake was falling apart. turns out she had left the cake out on her kitchen counter overnight in summer. buttercream doesnt like to be treated like this. the cake obviously melted. ive changed my way of doing collections because of this.

This is not necessarily a "karen" moment. She asked for something specific for an occasion that was important to her and although you realized you couldn't accomplish all aspects of what she wanted (height and numbers of servings) she didn't have that information. She had a vision in her mind and it wasn't what she ordered so she was very disappointed and it was obviously too late to re-do or order elsewhere. You blew it. Although you admitted you should have explained it to her, you still blamed her for her feelings of disappointment. To post this as though she was at fault isn't very nice. You say "lesson learned", well you got part of it as you now know to explain to your customers when there is a discrepancy but that was only part of the lesson. Your cakes are a work of art and your customers deserve your respect the same as you deserve theirs.

You weren't paying attention. The Karen moment isn't being disappointed. That's understandable. The Karen action was constantly calling and calling to complain about the same thing over and over again to the point of harassment instead of actually trying to come up with a compromise or solution to the problem. If you think that's an ok thing to do, then I hate to break it to you but you're a Karen yourself. As an artist, time is money and every call like that could have been spent improving the finished product (in this case, the cake and fixing it to satisfy the customer).

My reasoning is it freezes well and it actually saves me money in not buying other desserts or sweets. We do the celebration with candles etc then we all have a serving, we leave a little out bc i have teens who magically eat in the night like mice, and i cut and place the rest into like family size containers, and freeze. It works for us and that way when my brother comes for dinner on the weekends, I've got a dessert if he wants and if he doesn't more for the rest of us! That said, if everyone's birthdays are close together like we have quite a few cake events in spring with mother's Day, two birthdays and fathers day, so we just get sizes we need... But i do love to buy in "bulk". A deep freezer and good quality containers are such a blessing when you're on a tight budget! 🤗

My first wild Karen encounter was when I was with my friends at the pool and we were getting done so we went to the girls room to change back to our normal clothes. Then I see a pair of yellow glasses sunglasses with a brown case. So I picked them up and said "who's are these?" then I hear a voice saying "Those are mine." Then she snatched them and complained about me "getting her clothes wet when I was sitting by them, not in range to get them wet. Then I just said "sorry" and she was YELLING AT ME saying "I'M NOT OVER HERE TOUCHING YOUR STUFF!!! YOUR OARENTS NEED TO TEACH YOU RESPECT. YOU NEED TO ,EARN RESPECT!!" It was as dramatic as I texted it, but she was basically yelling at me. Thinking about it now is just funny. I was a kid at the time too and was just trying to save her glasses.

My first Karen encounter was my own mother rudely complaining about a slightly overcooked steak to a server who at the time seemed to be in her early 20s while they were busy and seemingly understaffed (the only detail I don’t exactly remember, this was years ago) and she was incredibly sweet and kinda seemed to be dying inside the more my mom spoke. The first of many times I saw my dad use his parent tone to tell her to knock it off. My mom seems to be treating wait staff better now but she hasn’t gotten much better at home.

This one girl in high school said that I needed to specifically call her CA-SAUN-DRA not CASS-AND-DRA then proceeded to yell at me for like the most random things. I have never seen her before that one day we were supposed to work on a project together and her friends yelled at me too because they were clique-y. Some people are so dumb. Yelling at people they don't know for like no reason instead of just saying, "Hey this school won't allow 4 volunteers anymore, so we can help you find another site to volunteer at." Instead of, "YOU'RE SO STUPID FOR (w/e the heck)"

I think those are dowels. They keep the bottom layer from sagging under the weight of the top layer.

I take art commissions and I am dreading my first Karen day D: I always update with progress pics and ask lots of questions about anything I don't understand/think will look bad in hopes it will minimise that sort of thing but if I keep at it... surely I'll meet one...

I understand that you didn't tell her the serving size but she definitely overreacted. That blows my mind. And only $40 for BOTH cakes?! No. She absolutely had zero room to complain for that price. You gave it to her for the cost of ingredients. She basically got two free cakes. That blows my mind. 🤯

    I remember…
The First time I came across a Karen
It was Monday August 16 (it was my bday and I was turning 13) and me and my family were driving through a parking space after going out to eat and this other car
Comes in out of nowhere the wrong way in front of us and takes the parking spot we were originally going for, so we had no other choice but we parked across from the other car. We get out and the lady inside gets outta the car and goes through the hallway, and I hear someone say something in the hallway, and then I hear my dad yell “Shut the fuck up” and then I hear the same voice more clear and I asked my parents what was happening and they said the lady who they were yelling at, actually called us all “fucking ignorant idiotic people” and then we step into the elevator and go back up to the 19th floor where our stuff was, we unpack once we’re up their and my dad somehow saw which room she was in and wanted to have a word with her (to tell her not to say stuff like that) and I don’t blame him because she wasn’t just insulting my parents, she was insulting my dad, mom, me, my sister, and my younger sister who was 5-6 and mostly they’d say not to swear around little children since they can learn it off you and use it for something they shouldn’t. So time skip to Wednesday we’re at the beach and we have our stuff with us, and after gathering 3-4 baby shark teeth and a bunch of seashells we decide to go chill in the pools behind the hotel we were staying at, and what do you know?
As we were washing ourselves off the sand the husband of that lady comes up to us and starts “talking” to my dad and mind you, my dad had to go somewhere else that morning and he saw the girl and he tried to make peace with her and stop the arguing by holding the door for her that morning but going on with that fight, the lady and the husband are now arguing with my parents and I’ll tell you know this girl literally screamed Karen, she had blonde hair, and the Karen cut. They also had a daughter who was sitting on a beach chair taking photos of us only and called me and my sisters were just sitting their watching them argue, and then this bitch just calls me and my sisters “bowls of shit” like bish we did nothing. Then I decide to call her bitch for insulting us for no reason. So then after 20 minutes of arguing the lady was like “ugh, can you two just like stfu?” So we stayed quiet washed the rest of our stuff off and went swimming, and I started feeling a little uncomfortable because I took a glance at the family and saw the daughter recording and taking pictures of me, my sister, and my dad. After like an hour or so we had our stuff on a beach chair not being watched and idk how but when we were almost ready to leave my sister realizes her flip-flops were missing, and we spent an hour trying to look for her shoes, and we couldn’t find them, so then we go back to our room and just chill for the rest of the night (not chill but we actually went to this really cool pirate show as a bday celebration since we couldn’t do anything on Monday)
So short story short: this random lady cussed me and my family out, called us bitches, ignorant, and pieces of shit for no reason, and they probably stole my sisters shoes.

The order wasn’t made to the customer’s liking. Mimo acknowledged her mistake and gave the customer a discount. I agree it’s disappointing to not get what you want. Customer service is very important for a business. Though, it’s not reasonable for her to have the cakes for free. In this case, one or two phone call to express her disappointment would have suffice.
