For the best sound keep the gain below halfway and if you need more drive use a pedal.I have it permanently switched to the 0.5 watt setting and my neighbour reckons he can still hear me even though my house is detached from his!
Yep, amazing little amp...I have the new one (the drum machine isn't amazing)....I live in an abandoned house so I had no other option when I bought it, I'm playing a Mexican Strat through it and I can't believe how good it sounds, not to mention the range of cabs to choose from
I always kind of wished that music stores wouldn't have music playing in the background. It fucks me up, I'll pick something up wanting to try a specific song/sound, and then all I can think of is the song that's playing. On the other hand, I've had fun jams with complete strangers just because we would all naturally play along with the radio at GC lol
I know these amps have been out for a while, but checked out the Mini 5 recently and was really impressed. Better than the Fly and Boss. A little more expensive, but worth the difference. Sound more robust and less fizzy than the competition.
Thank you for the great review. I was leaning toward an old childhood friend, the Pignose, but I knew there had to be something better out there. I ordered and just received my Vox amp. I have to say that this little guy does everything and more that I could ask for. Thanks!
"Don't say we only do expensive gear reviews". I never thought that. I always found you guys did a pretty good balance between affordable gear and expensive stuff. Maybe the reputation comes from the fact that expensive stuff tends to be the newer approach to guitar technology and manufacturing? Which makes sense, as there's a point of diminishing returns if cheaper guitars are just using the same baseline tech and manufacturing process - as greatly as they have been improved the last decade or so - where the differences is really just brand and which brand is willing to go for the smallest profit margin. Otherwise reviewing 'the more expensive' gear is more an exercise in reviewing different tech and manufacturing paradigms these companies adopt over time.
It doesn't get any better in terms of size and quality for price - Vox is simply the best sounding amp emulation out there for the cost. DSP technology sounds great in these little amps, as well as the Tonelab and Stomplab series, and the VT series.
An amp like that would be great for the beach or street musician using an acoustic. That said it would be nice to see you guys demonstrating on some electric acoustics. Don't miss out on your acoustic playing audience.
You guys are wayyy too caught up on this 'busking' idea...How about someone that just wants to be able to pick up their guitar and amp and go out on their patio and play, without needing an outlet...perfect...
@automachinehead Hey man, don’t knock it till you try it. Jamming with people or even playing on your own outdoors in nature, while electric, is cool as hell.
Dear Mr. Chapman, I cant thank you enough for the lessons and advices that you put out there. It really helps us in ways you cant imagine. Recently I have been struggling in making new melodies and tunes and in fact slowly loosing interest in playing guitar, mostly because I don't find the joy and I am stuck in the same place for a long time.... Any advice would be very helpful since I love playing and making music 😊
I absolutely love my little Vox Mini 3 Gen 1 for practice. I've even used it for recording clean with a mic for color and add effects in a DAW, and they just sound killer. Wonderful little amps!
thanks to you guys i went to guitar center and got the mini 3 i played slide blues on it i was blown away so i had to get it...now i need a case...January 3rd my ford explorer was stolen never found so..i will go down town phoenix and play my heart out to see if i cant get enough to buy a new/used small suv
Just got mine and so love it! It is pure magic that so much power can come from a small amp! I like this better than the Orange Micro crush even and Micro Terror for half the price.
We once did save an open air wedding ceremony by having the notary public's speech amplified to about 150+ guests by this little guy... Amazing surprise! :D
I rigged this up to a blackheart b15 combo which has generally very bassy 12" speaker via the headphone socket on the mini 3 (turn volume knob on mini 3 right down) if your using a larger speaker as it could damage it about 1/4 volume on the mini 3 is fine. And my word! I got an ace sound out of it and could easily be gigged the slight tinny speaker of the mini 3 was then bypassed to give a great overall sound the tinny and the bassy compliment each other
HI ROB that LP is SOOOOOOOOOOOO PRETTY! i love the wood color on the sides and back and that top wow! one of the best looking LP's i have seen and this is coming from a strat man/boy. oh and i love that it is hollow too.
Such an awesome video! Rob, I just wanted to say that over the years, you have become such a versatile player! When I first started watching you, I thought you were mainly a shred guy. But in the past several months, your playing has gone into so many different styles and it has been awesome to listen to! Continue your great work with Dorje and your channel! May God continue to bless you! :D
I'm Canadian and the only music store I could find that had these, they costed around $240 and as far as I can tell it would be a lot cheaper to ship it from andertons
Don't know about those little guys, but I recently bought a Vox VT20X and aside of a really crappy headphone output, the amp is very very nice. Orange and Vox models are the best I've ever heard. Some Marshalls are really good too.
Sssshhhh .. Couple weeks ago you pulled out your Boss Chromatic Tuner, the same one we all had at the beginning of out signal chain, 2nd to the VaVaVaVolume pedal; the one that people always asked me, " why do you have 2 of the exact same pedals for your guitar. One here --> and one there
I get the feeling that the people that are really surprised about your little jam session, and how focused you get, are either not musicians, or they are musicians that don't get to hang around other musicians much. This is how jamming goes, you get caught up. Especially if the people playing are familiar with everyone else's playstyle and timing. I remember my old band, we would improve new songs, testing out riffs, phrases or basic melodies. We were all so familiar with eachother that we could predict pauses from the others, and where each of us would want yo accent something. It made us look like we were well practiced and tight, but this is stuff we would make up on the spot. My first band, my dad's band, whom I played with for nearly 20 years, had gotten so familiar that we all had bady language and signals that were undetectable to the audience. Except for when Brinker wasn't paying attention, then Bill's signals would be comically exaggerated trying to get his attention lol
I think they are not only for people looking for a very affordable amps. If I could afford buying expensive valve amps I would buy one of these little amps just for fun! :D
right to vote at 2:11 minute 30 second Mark where you're just putting in random sounds are settings on the dials that first one was just really freaky when your Blended the two guitars together on that that was a really good combination for some reason it was no pun intended music to my ears.
They have Alesis do one. Its styled like on of those mini suitcases that you pull along on 2 wheels with a pull out/re-tractable handle. It has like a power pack that slots into the back that re-charges. It's also got bluetooth.
I got the Mini 5 based in part on your review and have a major complaint: it's to loud! Well sort of anyway. I also just got a Fender Player Plus Top and coming from a LTD Deluxe into a Yamaha THR10 I am having some serious issues getting tone. My use for these amps is primarily in a semi truck driving state to state. What I am finding is that on the lower wattage settings the harder rock amp models get a muddy sloppy sound but when its on max watts it sounds great, but then it gets to loud for use in a motel room! Seriously, I'm loving this amp and am sure I will get used to it. It is mostly an issue of too many new things going on at once. It is definitely good at getting a blues tone at any of the wattage settings.
Brandon It _may_ be because I live in a rural area. I guess when you live in a city you'd see _busking_. That may be why I've never heard it. But, I bet we say things in VA that you don't in WA, and vice versa.
Amazing full tube amps come out of Bugera and you can get a 22 watt used for 250 with infinite tube monitoring. FX, dual channel, mid boost, variable output, and a good control pedal for gain and the rather good built in reverb.
purchased mini ht-r Vox didn't know what I had until a pro played it. I bought a $400 tube amp I didn't need. after I was shown what the vox could do I was very happy with it. found a nice mim strat on ebay.
for beginners I recommend having a lesson in itself from an experienced player to show you what all the effects settings do to your signal. some songs require tap-tempo for instance. notice what compression did for +Rob Chapman!
One thing I always wondered is... how would it sound to get plenty of little amps plug to a single guitar. I received a 15w Fender Frontman, when I was a young boy and I always wanted to try that, but I only could get two amps wired that way. It would be cool to try that idea on some more.
Interesting comment, Use one of these (from the line up) as a practice/song writing amp where quite often I go and commune with nature, Last time I was on a volcano surrounded by vocations. there biggest problem is they are not that loud wispier like is more the sound that you here in person but they do seem to mike up well or feed the headphone output into a sound card and the recorded sounds are OK at a pinch. They are more redeeming than that amp that came with the guitar package at the lowest price in the shop :)
I live in the U.S. and I started playing guitar about a year and a half ago and my guitar teacher and a bunch of the teachers at the store I go too gig with the micro cube amp because it's just easy to set up at most of there gigs because they are usually small gigs
I've had my Vox Mini 5 Rhythm for 11 years and I have mixed feelings about it. The preamp sims are ok, but not stellar. It's kind of a muddy sounding thing, and I find that even with a P90 in the bridge and the tone cranked up full, it just doesn't spit out enough treble to make me happy. However, though I'm not crazy about the preamp sims, I find the line input is fantastically clear with ample headroom for an external preamp pedal. So, instead of cranking the tone up full and losing all my bottom end, I can set the bass, mid, and treble on the preamp pedal and set the tone knob to about 1 o'clock on the Vox Mini and it gives it a great treble boost. Preamp pedals are great with the Vox Mini 5 Rhythm on the 'line' setting. Ironically, the preamp pedal I use the most is a Mosky Classic AC-30. It sounds more like a Vox than the Vox Mini's AC sims. Another thing that makes the Vox Mini 5 sound kind of 'meh' is rechargeable batteries. Your average 6xAA rechargeables pump out a paltry ~7.2 volts and the thing really wants 12. With the low voltage it doesn't take much volume for the speaker to start sounding farty and obviously underpowered. My solution is to velcro a 12.6V rechargeable power pack to the inside of the trap door and plug it into the DC power jack. HUGE difference. Much better at handling higher volumes without farting out, and with 9800 mAh capacity, I probably won't need to recharge it again until next year. Another thing that I love about the Vox Mini 5's line setting... my bass sounds wonderful through it too, especially after upgrading to the 12.6V battery. It's really clean and you can turn it up quite loud before it starts to distort. The bass also sounds decent through the microphone jack so if you want to plug in a guitar and a bass and jam with the rhythm loops, you're good as gold. This amp is small but it really is a Swiss army knife. On it's own it's ok, but team it up with a preamp pedal and a 12.6V battery pack and it's a hell of a lot better.
Ironically one of my favourite sounding vids in your collection. Those amps are sweet. ps...Rob... Simple Dm Pent will suffice for Black Magic Woman ;) Oh go on then.. throw in a tad of Dorian.
The Mustang III and above are great sounding amps. Yeah, if you A/B them with an expensive tube amp they're not going to quite hold up (although the difference in tone is a lot less noticeable than the difference in price), but you can get perfectly good and gig-worthy tones from them.
Calling this a 'busking amp' seems to have negative impact, I would call it a 'bedroom amp' instead for practise and leave it plugged on the mains. I have a VOX DA5 amp from years ago which was a precursor to this series and the reverb modelling is the best I've heard without a pedal when demoing other amp makers reverb settings. Now my DA5 is packing in (cuts out) and so I'm wanting a replacement. Also the 'crunch' setting on this series gives a real nice mix of clean with some slight overdrive and that is also the tone I like - but it's not demoed here in this video. I happen to like the Vox modelling and definitely think it's versatile enough to suit most needs.
I have the ID core 10 too got a 15w marshall last week and returned it not much in that price range can compete with the blackstar......playing a 2015 gold top through it my tiny mind told me I had to play my LP through marshall but was wrong
I have the ID core 10 too got a 15w marshall last week and returned it not much in that price range can compete with the blackstar......playing a 2015 gold top through it my tiny mind told me I had to play my LP through marshall but was wrong
one and only gtope about these little powerhouses..the distortion sounds to "Tinny" but i imagine id i used the headphone out and pumped it throught my Vox VT50 it would sound just like the VT 50 ...I love VoX
I've seen some of these little amps with a built in rechargeable battery. Much better than buying a whole set of store bought batteries every time it dies. I have a Behringer MPA40 that will get about 5 hours (at high volume) on a full charge but it's not a guitar amp just a powered PA mixer-speaker. Recently picked up a Marshall MG2 that is old-stock from a few years back (gold face) it sounds good for a tiny amp but runs on "C" batteries so it's expensive to use over time as a remote unit.
Built in batteries i don't like. But they could have gone the way some other companies have, and make the Amp take rechargeable batteries, and charge them when running on mains power.
There is a way to connect to USB power banks with a USB DC booster. I have the VOX mini3 G2 and AC1. I bought a pedal-style polarity (outside +) 9V booster (myvolts.com branding) which I can use with the AC1. Unfortunately, the mini3 uses a reversed polarity (inside +) so I cannot test it. However, with a cheap multi-voltage AC adapter, I did check that it still works at 9V (after all, 6x 1.5V batteries will not provide more). On vox.com it says current consumption is 175mA. So I guess a 9V 700mA DC booster should be no problem. As for power noise, out of the 2 power banks I tested, only one of them injects noise in the amp (don't even ask about the AC multi-V adapter). But again, this is on the 1W AC1. As for built-in batteries, I assume when the battery dies (as in not holding any charge), you will have trouble finding a replacement. I don't think such a leap of faith will have success. But a 5V micro/mini USB power input..........
+djteac check the battery eliminator on line website, I've utilized two of them to power a wireless mouse. They work well but are a bit pricey but after all you'll never buy another battery again so to me it was worth it. www.batteryeliminatorstore.com/index.php?
You can use any Ni-MH AA rechargeable batteries. If you add a builtin charger to an amp you have to make it so the end user can't use regular alkaline batteries. The disadvantages of this are you are relying on a single charge and the battery isn't as easy to replace as regular rechargeable AA batteries.
I love my little vox g3 there are a lot of different hidden features (like volume knob actually working the way a tube power section breaks up ect..) that make it better and if you sit down and really tweak it i can get some spot on tones and for 3 watts it if fricken' loud when cranked. Actually every time i use it I cant believe i only paid 100 bucks for it.
I have the exact Vox Mini3 G2 amp and I got it in the exact same year 2 months before this vid was posted! For some reason I didn't even see that Rob Chapman did a video about it!!!!! I'm literally going crazy right now XD!
The Andertons busking challenge: Small budget for a battery powered amp and guitar from the store - you setup together for an hour in Guildford town centre with a hat (or something) in front of each of you and see who gets the most shrapnel!
Do this !!!!!!
+ 1 :-) cool challenge!
DO THIS PLEASE!!!!!
This would be very cool!
this would be sweet to see
I think Vox has the best mini amps. Not only do they sound almost like their full sized counterparts (Valvetronix) but they have very good modeling tech. Orders of magnitude better than Line6's modeling.
I've got the Vox DA5 which is the earlier version of the Mini 5 without the drum machine. The perfect practice amp. For the best sound keep the gain below halfway and if you need more drive use a pedal.I have it permanently switched to the 0.5 watt setting and my neighbour reckons he can still hear me even though my house is detached from his!
Yep, amazing little amp...I have the new one (the drum machine isn't amazing)....I live in an abandoned house so I had no other option when I bought it, I'm playing a Mexican Strat through it and I can't believe how good it sounds, not to mention the range of cabs to choose from
You two should totally just sit and jam for a few hours, record it and use it as background music in the store
can i get an amen for this comment!
+JOHN VINTER amen
Fantastic idea. Throw in Pete and Bea of course. Very inspiring for people shopping for kit.
I love vox amps, I only started playing guitar a couple of years ago and my first amp was the VT20+
Thanks!
I've gone back to the pignose - less is more!
Bought the Mini 5 a week back. Brilliant! The drum machine is just amazing!
I like the drum rhythms but sometimes have to crank the rhythm volume all the way up to hear it over the guitar. Do you have this issue at all?
"Don't say we only do expensive gear reviews". I never thought that. I always found you guys did a pretty good balance between affordable gear and expensive stuff. These really are great lil amps . Crack open the battery door about a quarter inch for a fuller sound ;)
An amp like that would be great for the beach or street musician using an acoustic. That said it would be nice to see you guys demonstrating on some electric acoustics. Don't miss out on your acoustic playing audience.
Rob dials in a random setting at 11:15 and gets the best amp sound I've ever heard from him!

I have the mini5!!!
I used it on my rig entry, love the little guy, looks so cool like an old radio. Got it for Christmas from my parents:)
These amps are fantastic the perfect recording at home amp

@@elvispresley7375 oooooh so quirky of you
@automachinehead Hey man, don’t knock it till you try it. Jamming with people or even playing on your own outdoors in nature, while electric, is cool as hell.
The incredible thing is how people say it's sound is not great, but recorded by these guys on UA-cam it sounds phenomenal!
Actually no the Vox Da5 is universally recognised as a classic already and one of the best amps for its price and function ever made…
Dear Mr. Chapman,
I cant thank you enough for the lessons and advices that you put out there. It really helps us in ways you cant imagine.

Can I just say @ 10:43 , that is one of the best tones I've heard from Rob in ages.
I have a vox mini 3. It's a fantastic amp and it basically has it all for the price.
Good review. Picked up a Mini5 and love it. Great living room practice amp, too. The beats are fun to play along with.
I love the look of Lee's CAP10 guitar, that pick guard on that finish is great
Just got mine and so love it! It is pure magic that so much power can come from a small amp! I like this better than the Orange Micro crush even and Micro Terror for half the price.
I have a Mini 5, upgraded from a cube, to me they sound more authentic with a vintage vibe.
I have never heard such superb tone

That is the most beautiful Les Paul I've ever seen.
I wake up at 5AM EST every day just to watch these videos lol, keep it up Rob!!!
I'm Canadian and the only music store I could find that had these, they costed around $240 and as far as I can tell it would be a lot cheaper to ship it from andertons

Nine of these and a Squier mini strat and you could be a very small Brian May.
Why has no one came up with a rechargeable amp
It is available now as Blackstar Fly Charge
They have Alesis do one. Its styled like on of those mini suitcases that you pull along on 2 wheels with a pull out/re-tractable handle.

I'd like to see that. Maybe they can use the money they make for charity, also.
Is that a "British" word? I live in VA, USA, and I've *never* heard that word before. I had to Google it...
John T. Campbell Probably. I first heard it from Glen Hansard, who is Irishman. I'm from Riga, Latvia, btw)

Any chance of another How to Gig For 500 pounds??
that would be great !
+Rain very true, but I managed to get my peavey bandit 112 Sheffield for £85
Micro terror head, run emulated out into PA, boom $150 amp.
if you want to gig for under 500 bucks these days, used peavey amps, and used mexican fenders are your best route.

wtf they sound amazing? i was expecting something like a micro stack etc
nah they are very trebly, little bass
Tone is subjective dude.
they sound like garbage. sorry.
They do sound better here than in the shop, atleast for me.
DamageIncM Not in my experience.
Rob and Lee go busking would be a fantastic video
For 62yrs old Rob LOOKS GREAT! The fountain of youth. Share the secret please. LOL!
holy crap , they're delightful .
They translate to youtube very well. Shit sounds outstanding.
Can't believe it sounds that nice in person.
Those things sound way better than they have any right to :)
Just got this, I can’t get enough of it. It’s a Swiss Army Watch of an Amp with big bollocks.
I learned very little from this video about the amps, except you can busk with them. Not very informative, sorry for the negative comment guys.
Not?
good enough for cleans and thats it

The Cap 10 is the guitar i am saving for. Such a beauty :)
I live in the U.S. and I started playing guitar about a year and a half ago and my guitar teacher and a bunch of the teachers at the store I go too gig with the micro cube amp because it's just easy to set up at most of there gigs because they are usually small gigs
Sounds great for what they're meant to be.
Great for teaching on the go as well... Two discrete inputs. That's how I use mine.
I own 4 of these amps, i cant get my tube vox amps to sound as good.
nice improvisation guys
Shaffordable to the max!
Capfordable!
I bought a mini5 after watching this, nice bedroom amp for practicing!
The genuinely sound better than the Waza amp
On it's own it's ok, but team it up with a preamp pedal and a 12.6V battery pack and it's a hell of a lot better.
i used to have a bass mini amp from vox, not the loudest mini amp ever but pretty good.
Ironically one of my favourite sounding vids in your collection. Those amps are sweet.
ps...Rob... Simple Dm Pent will suffice for Black Magic Woman ;) Oh go on then.. throw in a tad of Dorian.
Do a video comparing 3 or 4 modelation amps pleasee ^^
+Regal Snorlax I have the vypyr and its utter shite idk what you have been smoking..
+Regal Snorlax as a previous owner of a mustang 1 it sounds like bull crap
I've had a couple of modeling amps (Line 6 and a Fender). Neither one impressed me at all. I prefer more traditional solid state amps.
i have one vypyr and its not that bad xpp very nice clean tones in my opinion =) distortion iit´s not bad
The Mustang III and above are great sounding amps. Yeah, if you A/B them with an expensive tube amp they're not going to quite hold up (although the difference in tone is a lot less noticeable than the difference in price), but you can get perfectly good and gig-worthy tones from them.
You guys are another reason why I wish I live in the Uk
Can you make curry?
+Vivian Stanshall lmao
+Vivian Stanshall I'm Italian: I win everything just getting into a kitchen
as always love you guys cookies for every one!
I have the ID Core 10 by Blackstar for practicing in my dorm room and now I really wish I had gotten this instead
I have the ID core 10 too
got a 15w marshall last week and returned it
not much in that price range can compete with the blackstar......playing a 2015 gold top through it
my tiny mind told me I had to play my LP through marshall but was wrong

one and only gtope about these little powerhouses..the distortion sounds to "Tinny" but i imagine id i used the headphone out and pumped it throught my Vox VT50 it would sound just like the VT 50 ...I love VoX
That echo when he said hollow though
Why bother with a battery eliminator when it's cheaper to just buy the proper AC adapter for the amp?
The VOX actually includes an AC adapter.
Im impressed!
you forget that they are in England until Lee says Battery. Thank you gentleman.
I love my little vox g3 there are a lot of different hidden features (like volume knob actually working the way a tube power section breaks up ect..) that make it better and if you sit down and really tweak it i can get some spot on tones and for 3 watts it if fricken' loud when cranked. Actually every time i use it I cant believe i only paid 100 bucks for it.
here in the US I get to wake up to fresh Chappers and the Captain most every morning
I got the Mini3 and it sounds pretty decent for size and power use
that les paul straight into an ac30 would be epic
In 2022 Vox make the best amps for the money the AC15C1 is killer but so are the smaller amps to.
I love you, guys!
Is the Vox mini5 rhythm better than the Nux mighty air. ??
I have the exact Vox Mini3 G2 amp and I got it in the exact same year 2 months before this vid was posted! For some reason I didn't even see that Rob Chapman did a video about it!!!!! I'm literally going crazy right now XD!
cheers for this! really useful as im looking at this kind fo deal'y-o right now
