  • The highly localized streamside salamander is nearly identical to its more broadly distributed relative, the small-mouthed salamander. How can we be certain they are different and what is a "species"?
A special thanks to researchers at the Jezcova lab of Miami University for their assistance and valuable contributions to this video!

Very high quality video. I'm glad research is being done with these amphibians because they dont seem to get the attention they deserve.

That's cool. I've never found salamander eggs like that. Found plenty of newts eggs but they're attached to sticks and stuff. Next time I'm in range of Streamside salamanders I'll have to keep an eye out.

This video was fantastic guys, one of my favorite wildlife videos I've seen in a while. Your videos are always so polished and well thought out, I appreciate how seamlessly you blended a wildlife adventure video with effective science communication about such a cool evolutionary question. We haven't come across any streamside salamanders yet, I would love to see one while A. barbouri remains a valid taxon... I hadn't looked into the recent literature on how streamsides are classified, so this video helped a lot! As usual I'm blown away by the variety of b-roll that you have and how good it is, you guys never disappoint. I loved hearing from the researchers and learning more about their current studies, scicomm at its finest. Nice work!

Thanks guys! We really enjoyed making this one and are glad you enjoyed watching it. Not sure A. barbouri is at immediate risk of being “downgraded” from species status given how common hybridization and cryptic species are among other amphibians - certainly is murky though!
