So I grew up in the theatre, and from the time I was about 10 I started asking my parents friends, all actors about the approach they took to “becoming somebody else” (as I saw it then). It became my favorite question, probably asked it 30-50 times; and a few times it led the adults having uproarious arguments over the best approach. My dad and others were of a mind that it depends on whether the part is a lead vs character. A character part, especially if short, needs a hook, an inner vignette, that you can play into. A lead needs a more sustained inner consistency. One of our good friends, Hal Holbrook, got so lost in his (method) part that people worried for his mental health, so they would debate (think cocktails and argument at stage projection volume). The best argument I ever heard was this: “you can’t make a role from whole cloth. Instead focus on the difference between the role and yourself”. Hence the need for radical honesty (you have to have a solid reference point for your emotions). Don’t limp like someone who has a limp, walk as though you have a limp, and let the difference suffuse your character. Same for an accent or a ‘disturbed’ psychological state. The role might shock you, make you realize maybe that you’re not that far from your character, but having your truth underneath gives you a sanctuary, allowing you to stretch into and not hold back from the full breadth of your character. Woodenness is a consequence of thinking you can conjure up a character rather than extending yourself into it.

It would be so interesting if you had a podcast or a series of talking to actors, or even directors, makeup artist, producers, technicians, stunnt doubles, etc. Just everyone involved in film and television, and talk to them about all of this and see a conversation between you and them
    Their process
    Their reasonings
Comparing and having healthy debates on why you or them choose a way

Driver is correct. Actors show too much emotion. It's an exhibitionistic, self-indulgent display that robs the audience of the experience. That doesn't mean an actor never shows emotion. It depends, among other factors, on the story's circumstance, situation, conflict, stakes, point of view of the other person or people involved. Audiences tend to feel more emotion when the actor restrains it, like a pressure cooker. It can be very powerful and is hard to do. We don't cry. We try NOT to cry. That's what actual humans do. Unless they're manipulating the other character for a purpose or goal. Actors can easily and unintentionally wind up playing the victim in their roles through an excessive showing of emotion, especially anger and suffering.

Your vidoes from masterclass & YT hammers 🔨 being authentic. Text analysis, being a version of yourself in a similar situation that has the same weight/risk/stakes lights a flame and by being present 🎁 to the moment w your scene partner fans 💨🌬the scene. I really am enjoying your masterclass 2.0 I'm in Korea 🇰🇷. Acting is universal and your m.c. 2.0 has a great structure. Your class is beneficial in combination of watching the videos along w practically doing/applying

Have been following your channel for a long time, and it has helped me understand the craft and technique from an academic perspective.
Now my take on this is a mixed bag. Till I'm in front of the camera or on stage, I'm an incredibly gifted faker trying to learn everything about the character and apply it where it matters. But the moment I'm in front of the camera, I'm truthful and honest and am living the life of whoever I portray. But yes, then again, I've some 5-10% of my faint conscious/subconscious controlling me so that I dont overdo anything. Don't know whether this makes sense.

    1st one.
I did want to go with the second. I'm reading a book on this kind of stuff right now . The book is called Deep Survival.
Great book but it focuses on the mindset and why people survive and why people die.
So when you said probably people want to pick the second one because they want to believe people are truthful is bang on protecting ourselves from harsh truths

Bottom line really is that every actor has their own process. All are valid. Personally mine is a mash up of techniques BUT really yhe script snd where it places me and the emotion it is indicating is tops. Crying on cue is easy if the imaginary circumstances I find myself in and the words I'm using lead to that. No drawing on padt life experience, pieces of music that make me sad or other techniques Just where I am in a scene, what's happening around me and how that makes me feel!!

This was pretty helpful for me as sometimes I do really resonate with a character and it’s quite easy for me to project those emotions as the character buuut sometimes I just don’t resonate with the character but I’m still capable of pulling off a believable performance and I think the end result should be what’s most important. I don’t think we should have to feel like frauds if we don’t fully “become” the character, sometimes you have to truly “act” rather than “be”.

No need to believe truthfully that you are the evil bus in our remake of SPEED......Have you ever felt like a bus?
Not catching a bus, but just feeling what the bus must feel.....
We generally referred, in my younger days, by a technical term:
    psychopath......
Disclaimer: I acted for 40 or so years......never tried to feel like a bus...

Their is no 💩called method acting and their is no psychological breakdown when we see so-called actors we only see actors who are overacting and actors which are self conscious of themselves and actors who don't know where to go
And acting is not about building emotions internally it's about how You can convince peoples who watches them and acting depends on the aura they send not on the aura they feel I mean they pretend they're feeling and so-called method actors are self conscious of what they're doing and you can read pretending person without thinking too much
And the true definition of acting is shown us in tropic thunder by RDJ he explains it it's not about what you feel it's about what your audience feel if your audience can't feel you it means you're just mumbling and pretending.
Just like you feel Brando trying too much to act in the godfather and being insecure around camera that destroys everything and adam driver is right if the audience can't feel anything it means you're over doing
