Sorry, I didn't have the mic handy when I replied. I confused it with another brand...you're right, no power switch. Are you able to plug the mic into a USB port? Ok now I understand! I didn't realize the CX10 had a 3.5mm input as well. What are the other mics you've used with it that work fine? I'm wondering what the commonality is. Also, the Deity comes with two TRS cables. One is for general use and the other is for Sony compatibility. I'm wondering if trying the other cable (they look almost identical) might solve the problem? I use the D4 on a Panasonic GH4 with no problems. One would assume the 3.5mm jacks were the same.
I am searching over an external microphone that is usable with DSLR camera, and PC. I might want to make videos kind of outdoor (rollerblading/slalom skating mainly), and indoor recording me learning the Kalimba. I haven't had a chance to try the Rode Videomic or the MKE400 (MKE200 and MKE600 I've tried). The D4 *will* work both on a DSLR and on a computer. You'll probably need to get an extender USB cable for it to use it with your computer. Great review! About the RFI, is there any interference if you clip on a 2.4 MHz wireless transmitter on the cold shoe mount slide? You were pretty close to the mic where you were testing for RFI, so I'm thinking that the transmitter will seat 2 inches away underneath the back side of the mic, will that get rid of the RFI? I'm looking to get this mic and I want to use it with the "Hollyland Lak Max" wireless system. I heard that the newer Deity V-Mic D4 fixed that problem, but I wanted to know, just in case I get the older model. Thanks!
If I recall correctly, I could hear occasional interference even when the wireless transmitter was hanging by the mini-jack cable, which would have put it about 6 inches away. It's going to depend on the type of transmitter of course, and I haven't used the Hollyland mics. Hopefully the newer D4s are better shielded. Let me know how it goes!
Fantastic review and extremely in depth! Question though, I’d be using the D4 for my iPhone videos. Do you know of any mounting device for the D4 to sit atop the phone?
Hi James! Yeah, there are all sorts of inexpensive phone adapters that also have an accessory shoe on the top. The D4 would just mount on the accessory shoe. Something like this for example. It mounts on a tripod and you can mount the D4 on top. amzn.to/3qCDSlN (affiliate link)
I notice that they offer the TRRS 3.5 plug instead of the TRS, one would then assume that there should be some sort of headphone output so that if used with tablets and phones one can use headphones. Do you have any idea as to why TRRS and not TRS?
My understanding is that the audio output senses whether the recording device is a TRS or TRRS input and adjusts accordingly. So it needs the TRRS construction as the default. But there is no headphone jack on the mic, so that could be an issue for monitoring.
I don't own this mic but if you stop putting wireless stuff right on the mic there will be no problems, don't you think so? Just strap it under, or behind- it's that simple) Also on 11:00 there's also buzzing sound, yeah
Even with the wireless transmitter dangling down on the supplied cable, I still got some buzz when the transmitter moved. Yes it improves things but it wasn’t noise-free. Thanks for your comment!
I bought this, and have a lav plugged into it, however I don't know how to get it so it records dual channel. It should record the mic into L and the Lav plugged into it into R. This works when plugged into my DSLR with the TRS cable, but as it states in their instructions, it will not do this when using the TRRS connection. I want to use this on my mobile phone (it has a better preamp with no noise) which is TRRS, but it just bakes the recording together in one track as Deity say. Wondering if I buy a TRS to USB adapter it will work through that port? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. I can't find any info on this at all.
Thanks for your comment. I assume you’re talking about the Mini. I haven’t experimented with using the aux input while hooking it up to a phone/TRRS. I’m traveling right now (with the D4 Mini, coincidentally, but not the right cables for your setup). Perhaps someone else will see your comment. Or I can try it in a week when I return.
@@MatthewHaines Hi, yes I am. The mini. Thanks. Having a hard time trying to find out. I don't want to keep splurging on cables all the time. It would be great if I could get it to record 1 mic to each channel because it gives so much more scope in post processing. Annoyingly the Deity tells you that the TRRS cable cannot do this, but not how to get around it. I guess you need a device that accepts a TRS input, or maybe the USB mini will allow it. I'm not even sure if the USB will use phantom power? My phone does record in stereo with the internal mic, just not the external ones. I believe TRRS is used for L/R output and only one mono for mic in.
When I was researching a shotgun mic for my iphone12pm, I thought the D4 Mini was the best with in my budget range. I agree that the D4 sound a bit better and fuller, but I've gone off the idea of shotguns for my use. I have invested in a Fulaim X5 wireless job at c $130, but honestly my $20 PurplePanda wired lav gives me a better sound.
Yeah, I understand! It's a tradeoff between convenience, quality and audio consistency. Lav mics and wireless mics require more setup, and wires and clothing noise can be an issue. But your sound will likely be more consistent than using an on-camera mic. I tend to use wired lavs indoors (if I'm not using a studio mic), and outdoors I use either wireless or an on-camera shotgun mic.
I'm not aware of Deity making any changes to the mic re the RF interference. However, they don't respond anymore when I reach out to them. They seem to have taken my honest review a little personally. The mic is still a good mic IMO, as long as you're not attempting to use it with wireless mic systems other than Deity's.
No worries about interference. I have this and the Rode Wireless GO II. As long as you mount the Rode GO II on the mounting plate underneath the microphone where it is meant to be placed there is absolutely no interference. The only way you are going to have the transmitter causing interference is have it touching the top of the microphone. No one is going to mount it that way unless you plan on taping it to the top of the mic.
That's good news! I've had several viewers report that newer versions of the D4 don't exhibit this problem, so it's possible that Deity fixed it after I reviewed the mic.
@@MatthewHaines Yea i could have ended up with the revised version. Oh yea one more mention about hat too because you said something about it... You CAN clip your wireless receiver, you slide it into the front side on the bottom where the screw screw slides. Forgot to mention that before just fyi for ya.
I think that was less true when I made the video than it is now. But if true, then it’s a big fail from Deity. That said, other viewers have commented that they may have since fixed the problem. Thanks for your comment.
I don't think a "longer" microphone like this one belongs on a camera if you're filming and vlogging outdoors; however, I may use the longer one for video presentations that I make using my notebook or PC. As far as the outdoors are concerned, I'd go with the D4-mini exclusively. Nice video. Thank you! 👍
A longer shotgun mic will often (obviously, this varies from model to model) provide more directionality and cut out noise from the sides. Frequency response tends to be better than the mini mics as well. If I'm doing a vlog-style video with a mirrorless camera, I would likely choose something like the D4 or the Mackie. If I were shooting with a Sony ZV-1, GoPro or phone, I'd lean more toward a mini mic. Basically, I'm going to use the biggest mic I can that feels comfortable on my capture device. But that's just me! :) Thanks for watching!
Just bought the Deity D4 and tried it with my DJI Wireless Mic. Definite interference, making this combo UNUSABLE. You don't have to hold the transmitter up to the microphone body to get the interference. It occurs when the DJI is connected to the cold shoe on the Deity (the way it is designed). Very disappointed. I contacted Deity to see what they will say about this.
Oh that stinks. Sorry to hear that! The DJI system is not a combination I tried, but I did try two other wireless systems and got the same thing (as you saw in the video). Deity downplayed the problem as being the fault of other companies' products being unshielded. I'd be VERY interested to hear what they say. I mean...aren't wireless systems *supposed* to put out radio frequencies? I would think it should be the other equipment that should be shielded.
@@MatthewHaines It is really similar to this one with a few other options (pad, low cut, safety channel -20 db). As for sound I can't make a 1:1 comparision but it should be a little better on noise floor than the Deity but sounding similiar.

Any updates since 5 months
I'm not aware of Deity making any changes to the mic re the RF interference. However, they don't respond anymore when I reach out to them. They seem to have taken my honest review a little personally. The mic is still a good mic IMO, as long as you're not attempting to use it with wireless mic systems other than Deity's.
I went with the 3 pro
I haven't tried that one. Let me know how you like it!
the interference is a big worry for me , .... I might stick with a sennheiser MkE600 with a Sony UWP wireless to be on the save side
Uhh I have my D4 To wireless LAV system boomed here :-) lol.. No issues, no humming or any noise.
@@mediaflmcreation thanks, I’ll try it!
I think you're totally wrong about most people won't hook up a wireless system to a shot-gum mic. Everyone is doing that.
I think that was less true when I made the video than it is now. But if true, then it’s a big fail from Deity. That said, other viewers have commented that they may have since fixed the problem. Thanks for your comment.
@@MatthewHaines Have you found out how to tell yet? Is there a serial number threshold to look out for?
Damn, I just bought the Rode VideMic NTG...
I haven’t tried that one yet. How is it?
@@MatthewHaines It is really similar to this one with a few other options (pad, low cut, safety channel -20 db). As for sound I can't make a 1:1 comparision but it should be a little better on noise floor than the Deity but sounding similiar.
I have both and the Deity is superior in sound quality to the NTG and has less self noise especially when using USBC. The Rode suffers from a lot of handling noise when you start moving around which kills my audio everytime. It will have to stay stationary or mounted on a gimbal.
