- These are my initial thoughts and observations about the VX-6R. I also run through the included accessories as well as some other items such as the Yeasu Clip-14.
You were very smart in your choice on the Yaesu vx-6r great radio thank you for sharing this video
Thanks for posting this, I've been looking at several Yaesu's and haven't decided yet. More and more I've been leaning towards the VX-6R and finally made up my mind. Once again, excellent review.
VX6R is a great HT!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks excellent video and excellent information on the new radio. At some point in the future will be my new go to most likely. Very helpful video, better than most open the box type reviews. Thanks!
I live north of you in Buford.
Learning as much as I can before I take my test.
Subbed. 👍🏼
Thank you!
Thanks for the great review. I really appreciate how u walk us through all the accessories and don’t dwell on the radio too much. As I’m fairly new to Ham radio... I was unaware of there being a store in Atlanta. I’m in Bham, Alabama and works out nicely. Thanks again!😁👍👍
Bill Badoni Thanks for watching! I’m glad it was helpful! I am planning on making a follow-up video soon.
Just thought I would pass along something I learned recently about the VX-6R HT... While watching RadioPrepper, he mentioned that he had just gotten the radio ( although I think it's the European version ) and that when he removed a jumper under the battery compartment panel, he was able to transmit on 6 meters... I recently purchased a VX-7R antenna, which has two sections, and together it will work for the 6 meter band. Since I had the radio unlocked from Gigapart when I purchased it , it will now also transmit on the 6 meter band as well as those slightly outside of the amateur bands in case of emergencies... Although it might only be transmitting at 1 watt, and I haven't determined how well the transmission might be It still seems like the small investment was worth it for the additional capabilities...
I wanted to follow up with you on this. Have you experimented with the mod much?
Thank you for the tip on the belt clip. I just got one for my VX-6R today, and I had no idea how to unclip it from the radio after I had clipped it on.
Thanks for the heads up on the AA adapter. I did not realize alkalines limited you to RX only.
John Nesbitt You’re welcome! That’s mainly the reason why I started making these kinds of videos. I wish I would have read up a little more about it but I was surprised too. When putting in freshly charged AAs I noticed it read a lower voltage so I looked into it and read that info somewhere. Thanks for the comment! It’s encouraging to see this channel actually helping other hams. Thanks for watching!
@@lytcomm88 If you put AA Lithium batteries in that cradle rather than alkaline, it that also RX only? Or does it allow TX then?
Ryan Wichelns It always allows TX, it just limits it to a lower output wattage.
@@lytcomm88 Got it. Do you know if loose AA lithium batteries limit TX in the same way as AA alkaline batteries?
@@AdirondackSherpa I'm not sure. It's probably worth a try.
Excellent video, professional and informative. Well done!
Thank you!
Nice, my favorite handheld.
Hey buddy I really like your video on the vx6r I have the same radio you're absolutely right it's rugged I have mine for about a year-and-a-half it still looks brand new I keep it in the case and I get to waterproof mic for it and all the accessories to go with it it's a great price point for with the radio does thanks for sharing this video really appreciate it goodbye from Atlanta Georgia
Joe Framo Thank You! It’s good to hear it’s working well for you!
Great hands on video on the radio!
Cro PrPr Thank you!
Great video. I love my VX6R. I have had mine almost a year now. I got the mod when I bought mine at HRO. The only thing I did different was buy a Super Elastic Signalstick Antenna. I frequent the backcountry and it works better for me. Kn6mat
hotfootedhiker Thank you! Yeah, I also ended up buying a super elastic for mine. I have used it extensively now and I’m going to do a review soon. Thanks for watching!
Still recommend this radio or should I look at something else? Also, what freqs with what antennas have you tried with the mod?
I went with VX-7. Hard to get now. More info on the screen, 4 bands. However 2 bands not very usable, 6m band need much bigger antenna to be effective, 220mhz is a bit rare. It can transmit on very wide range.
What i dont like about vx 6 and 7 is a AA battery pack. The battery need to be fitted with a hummer, and taken out by screwdriver, provide tiny power with only 2xAA. Seruously? Both batteries are fixed by tiny plastic clip that feels very weak. All the rest are great radios.
Love my radio. The only thing different I have I use the Super Elastic Signalstick Antenna.
hotfootedhiker I use that antenna as well. The 6 month review will probably include a review of the Signalstick.
LYTCOMM88 cool looking forward to it
@@Whiskey6Radio The 1 Year review has been out for a while now. Just curious to see if you've seen it at all. 73!
@@lytcomm88 I’ll have to watch it. Thanks for the heads up
How easy was this radio to set up and figure out? Im studying for my license, and have not purchased a radio but i have loke a top 5 and this is one of them?
excellent!
I noticed you added a new antenna to your radio... just wondered if you had a chance to use and antenna analyzer to see just how much difference there is between the original and the after market...? I haven't tried an after market on my radio, but have tried several on others and found them to be less advantageous than the stock ( which is better across the freq's I use )
The Diamond antenna that I show in the video works well. I have not used an analyzer but I get great signal reports going into the local repeater.
What is a good solid antenna for the VX-6?
I talk about that in my one year review: Yaesu VX-6R: ONE YEAR REVIEW (Super-Elastic Signal Stick + Yaesu Accessories)

Hey thanks for nice job!
One question, does the signal stick affects the Waterproof rating?
Sorry for the late response. I don't think it does if you have the antenna screwed in all the way it seems to make a good seal.
@@lytcomm88 thank you for the response!
Have you tryed to use the battery box with the lituimion battery 14500? Size AA but 3,6volts. Maybe this will work
I have not tried any other internal battery. I have only used an external Lithium Phosphate battery together with the internal.
Is this radio DMR capable ??
no

Nice👍

Hey my friend make another video on a vehicle 6r you have a great presentation you do a great job on UA-cam I subscribe to your Channel
Thank you! The next video will be a second Vx6R review! Thanks for watching!
I never even tried to manually program my VX-6R, which I've only had 3 weeks. I got programming software for it and once you take 5 minutes to figure out the software, you can literally program like dozens of channels in a few minutes. I got the Diamond triband SRH320A antenna instead of the dual band like this guy got. How ya gonna do 220 with a dual bander? The VX-6R can do 220, not just 2M and 440. This radio can be mars modded by anyone that can take a soldering gun with some de-solder wick and takes about 4 minutes to do. Don't need a professional to MARS mod this one.
It's a nice radio. But the battery life is quite short. The ability to listen to SW is nice but it could use a secondary jack for that. Also the "pre-programming" of SW stations is a waste of memory in that the majority of the pre programmed stations aren't transmitting to North America anymore/are not broadcasting at all. The belt clip is totally useless. Yaesu could have done it a little better with this
should i get the mars mod on this radio?
Up to you. I wouldn’t want to risk damaging the radio.
@@lytcomm88 Well I would have gigaparts do it. Not sure how easy it would be to get the additional frequencies with the stock antenna, or if I would need specific antennas or gear to use them.
@@anonymous_friend not sure. I know the UA-cam channel “Radio Prepper” does that mod himself. He may go into what is needed to operate on those frequencies. Might what to check it out.

Unless you are extremely dedicated, well practiced and licensed, this resource is not worth the investment.
What are you referring to specifically?
@@lytcomm88 It's overpriced unless you really need one.
