If your going to store it just disconnect the battery from the radio and only plug it in when your going to use it
Hola estimado.
Viva Chile!
@@lytcomm88 ohhhh jajajajajakjaja excelente!!! Muchas gracias y felices fiestas cumpatriota
The FT70D has the SAME issue with the battery discharge. It's super annoying. I have to remove the battery after charging if I'm not going to use the radio right away or move it to "cold storage" while I use another. This is 100% a design flaw on Yaesu's part.
I've got this shack in the box on my wish list. It's this or the icom but the elecraft is sooo much smaller and has a tuner and uses less power
I believe they have made some upgrades to this rig. I think it now has the option to charge the battery without pulling it out
I have had one a couple years now and it's a decent radio. Has a lot of features and can do a lot of things except for digital/APRS or GPS. Of the dozens of things it can do, I really only ever needed to master the basics. Will never need to do more than a few of those things it's capable of. Badness is the slow san speed but it's a 20 year old design so I can forgive that. Scanning is something I do with all my HTs and it's important to me. As an ex-pilot I like to scan the aircraft band and this one is good at it except for the slow scan. It will also do the entire military aircraft band, not just the civilian one. It has a fairly good AM detector. Does HF but not SSB, hard to forgive that. Won't do broadcast AM/MW band without an added antenna, the rubber ducky will only pick up a few of the strongest AM stations. The menu is a s*** show because the arcane abbreviations are hard to remember what they mean so you have to have a manual to remember most of them. On the bright side, to make up for the really low max power on the 220 band it does well with what little wattage it's got. I talked on simplex to a guy on 223.500 over 7 miles away from me one time. But I do live on the side of a hill which helped. Has a decent sound quality too. Programming even simplex on the keyboard is not easy if you want to put things in memory and repeaters are difficult so I recommend software to program it. I can program my new Kenwood TH-D75 with the keypad easily compared to this little Yaesu. Overall though it's a keeper for sure.
Random question but are in Cleveland, TN?
Yes!
I've had my VX-6 since I first got my Tech license about 1.5 years ago. It was mt very first radio. I initially got it for it's durability, where it has since proven itself to be as close to indestructible as you can feasibly get. It pretty much lives its life attached to the side of any one of my three backpacks. It's been kicked, dropped, slammed into things, tumbled down the side of a mountain, and been submerged twice. It's got some minor scuffs on it, but still functions like it did when I pulled it out of the box. I do however wish it had a bigger battery. If I go out into the wilderness, I tend to take two spare batteries with me. I also primarily use a signal stick for the antenna. I found that it works really well, and its flexibility allows me to cleanly route the antenna through the MOLLE webbing on my pack or plate carrier. I just don't know how waterproof it is. I have had the signal stick on the radio in both heavy rain and snow a few times and it has been fine, but both times it's ended up under water it just happened to have the factory antenna on it. I really like the Signal Stick, I just don't know if I trust it going under water. As far as the parasitic drain on the battery, I noticed that right away. I just don't store it with a battery installed. It just sucks that spare batteries are $80.
Thank you for your videos n this radio. You do and amazing job describing things.
Hi, thanks for this video. I've noticed it too long ago that the battery drains away if unused for weeks. Therefore, when I'm not using the radio I slip a thin paper in the battery terminal, thus making a physical disconnect from the radio. This hack prevents the battery from getting drained. When I want to use the radio I just pull out that paper from battery terminal and there is full charge. Whatever it is, I just love my VX6R. Thanks again for your awesome video. Cheers! New Delhi
How about just removing the battery entirely? Easier than putting paper in there.
My experience: Vx6 - drains; Vx7 - drains; Vx-8 so and so; Ft3-no drain; Kenwood thf7-no drain (endless battery life); Ft70-drains a lot; Icom ice92-so and so; Dv10 receiver-drains too much; Ft65-no drains. But for me the vx6 gives the best performance on the field, I use it out with 2 batteries (the same of the vx7). IU5MQY
Great video and well thought out review. I sold my HT last year that I never used and found I want one as we travel the country now. I’m pretty much HF CW only and these things look overly complex. You just outlined a few accessories that I think I’d need should I go this route. Thanks. de W1ND
My VX-6R battery does drain but it takes about 2 or 3 months after a full charge and even then it will power on but show the low-batt symbol. Trust me this is 100 times better than what i experienced with the FT-70DR. I bought TWO extra 1st party Yaesu batteries with that and all THREE (including the one that came with the radio) discharged while connected to the FT-70DR in about a month or two. It was terrible. I sold it in less then a year and got the VX-6R.
Same experience. I'm not going to sell my FT70D as it's the only HT that I have that can do YSF, but it's a problem and should be more known.
Your original videos were THE reason for my VX-6R purchase, and I can’t thank you enough! I also got the Yaesu clip to replace the “hook”, as well as a SignalStick antenna. No noticeable long-term battery drain, here. Looking forward to more videos!
Thanks for the update! Do you feel the battery drains when it is left out of the radio? Or only when it is seated in the radio? Do you keep a spare battery on hand?
No, the battery does not drain on its own. I keep a spare with me at all times though but I find myself using the spare less now that I’m constantly using the radio and charging it. When I didn’t use it as much, the spare would save the day.
I've had my VX-6r for about ten years... I don't use it often. But I've had the opposite experience with the battery on my radio. I can leave it off for months.... many months, and when I turn it on it will still have the same approximate charge. Doesn't seem to lose any, or very little charge if any. AWESOME radio That's always been one factor I look for in quality electronics, whether from Radios, to laptops, to charging bricks and phones
Interesting! I wonder if I have a defective unit.
Love your opinions. Glad you followed up on this. thank you!!
Thank you for watching!
So which HTs do you recommend for long term battery storage but with rugged durability?
I don't have much experience with other HTs other than this one and Baofeng HTs. I would say baofeng has a superb battery performance including for long term storage. I would say maybe anything that is marketed as rugged/water proof but that makes a physical disconnect when powered off (like I mentioned in this video).
Yaesu Ft-60
I love my VX-6 and it gets used every few days.I also have a couple of old VX-5 handhelds and they are still going strong after many years.I did recently replace the battery packs and I expect they will continue to carry on working for many years to come. 73.G7HFS/PA3IKHù
I have had my VX6r for awhile now and I agree the battery life an't the greatest but Despite that I love the Radio I have a neat video you may find interesting I Uploaded a video of me Receiving a Amateur Sat A091 Sat pass using the stock Antenna
I never even tried to manually program my VX-6R, which I've only had 3 weeks. I got programming software for it and once you take 5 minutes to figure out the software, you can literally program like dozens of channels in a few minutes. I got the Diamond triband SRH320A antenna instead of the dual band like this guy got. How ya gonna do 220 with a dual bander? The VX-6R can do 220, not just 2M and 440. This radio can be mars modded by anyone that can take a soldering gun with some de-solder wick and takes about 4 minutes to do. Don't need a professional to MARS mod this one.
does the battery last?
literally covered in the video
How easy was this radio to set up and figure out? Im studying for my license, and have not purchased a radio but i have loke a top 5 and this is one of them?
I cannot enable alerts on your channel, is that by design?
I’m not sure. Do you mean that when you subscribe, it doesn’t give you an option for all notifications?
@@lytcomm88 that is correct
Civil Air Band Rx capable..?
Yes it receives air band. I listen sometimes while monitoring a flight tracking app.

Unless you are extremely dedicated, well practiced and licensed, this resource is not worth the investment.
What are you referring to specifically?
@@lytcomm88 It's overpriced unless you really need one.

By any chance have you put some electrical tape over the battery contacts and reinstalled the battery? Does the charge then hold when sitting in the radio? I suspect there is a tiny discharge from the radio itself.
I’m addressing this in an upcoming video. Another viewer suggested the same. I would like to include your comment in it but I’ve already voiced it. If I am able to, would you be ok if I feature your comment in the video?
@@lytcomm88 Hi, sure.
What is a good solid antenna for the VX-6?
I talk about that in my one year review: Yaesu VX-6R: ONE YEAR REVIEW (Super-Elastic Signal Stick + Yaesu Accessories) ua-cam.com/video/TWj3qhLFvYA/v-deo.html

Thanks excellent video and excellent information on the new radio. At some point in the future will be my new go to most likely. Very helpful video, better than most open the box type reviews. Thanks!
Thank you for the video. Excellent job.
Dear friend, do you use software for programing end do you also use Barometric Pressure Sensor ?
I do not use software or barometric pressure sensor.
I went with VX-7. Hard to get now. More info on the screen, 4 bands. However 2 bands not very usable, 6m band need much bigger antenna to be effective, 220mhz is a bit rare. It can transmit on very wide range. What i dont like about vx 6 and 7 is a AA battery pack. The battery need to be fitted with a hummer, and taken out by screwdriver, provide tiny power with only 2xAA. Seruously? Both batteries are fixed by tiny plastic clip that feels very weak. All the rest are great radios.
DOES IT HAVE AM ,FM, AIR BAND, SW ?
I know for sure it has FM and Air. Not sure about the others
Currently using a Xiegu X6100. Ordered a Kx2 kit on 11/02/2022 - wait time 16-20 weeks. At least I have the X6100 until then, but to say that I am impatient would be an understatement. Thanks for the video.
Which connector is required for the Signal Stick antenna? A BNC, SMA female, or SMA male?

Fantastic video and terrific radio 73
I'm still sporting a vx-5, purchased around 2001 (I did replace the battery). What I'd like to know about the 6 is if it has a two line display option so you can see frequency + memory name at once. A feature of the vx5 that I'd be disappointed to be without.
Can you fit the battery charger and the Bioenno Battery in the case? Thanks. Nice video.
Haven’t tried the charger but I’m sure you can.
I owned a VX-6 about 6 years ago. I liked it very much. I then sold it and spent the additional money to buy a VX-8. This past June, my Beloved VX-8 was stolen out of my vehicle. Yaesu no longer makes the VX-8, and used ones are going for almost FIVE HUNDRED BUCKS! So, I went back to a VX-6. Bought it last week. EVERYTHING you say about the VX-6 is SPOT ON! It IS the CLEANEST sounding Audio I've ever heard, even better than the VX-8! I DO hope to get another VX-8 down the road. But, this time around I am going to KEEP my new VX-6. In my humble opinion, the VX-6 is THE MOST USER-FRIENDLY Yaesu that I have ever owned!
Hi. I can hear AM (sw, HF) in 500khz - 999.99 mhz? Greetings from Chile
Great video and thanks for sharing. You have helped me to make a purchasing decision and I really appreciate and value your review, thoughts and comments. 73! WI9RHC Milwaukee.

With all the trees available I would have opted for an EFHW 80m-10m choked and grounded at the feedpoint.
Good video. I built a K2 (60 hours) and K1 (40 hours) back when they were getting started. I enjoyed using my K2 and building the extra accessories for it. The K1 was built for another ham operator.
That sounds like fun! Thanks for watching!
I just got a vx-6r and a signal stick, and I'm not picking anything up on the 2m/70cm band. I'm a newbie. Can you think of anything I should try or settings to check? Thanks
Have you tried a local active repeater? My issue when I started Ham Radio was similar. I found that the best way to test my setup in my area was to find a local net on a local repeater. There I was able to hear traffic and check-in/ask for a signal report.
should i get the mars mod on this radio?
Up to you. I wouldn’t want to risk damaging the radio.
@@lytcomm88 Well I would have gigaparts do it. Not sure how easy it would be to get the additional frequencies with the stock antenna, or if I would need specific antennas or gear to use them.
@@anonymous_friend not sure. I know the UA-cam channel “Radio Prepper” does that mod himself. He may go into what is needed to operate on those frequencies. Might what to check it out.
