    Summary
    Playing this again after about 13 years was very emotional, especially as I ran the UK Mafia fan site all them years ago. It's a game that will always be special to me as it brought me well over 1000 hours of joy. The story is great, the immersion of the city, music and character are unsurpassed by any game since. Then when it's all over you have a huge sand box to play with in free ride mode and free ride extreme, it's a gaming masterpiece.
    Sure it feels dated when you play it in 2017 but it still got me totally immersed as I drove my little banger around the City, over the bridges, into the country, it's a proper game, when games were great. At £7 it's a steal, hell it's worth £7 to drive around the world listening to the radio and feeling that 1930's America immersion as you avoid the cops and obey the traffic lights, knowing you have a Thompson machine gun on your lap should things get out of hand.

      i don't agree on the soundtrack. maybe it fits the game, but i just hear "roalty free action music". Try Hotline Miami, Saviors, Desync and Distance for truly great Music.
      Edit: and if you like Orchestra music like the Mafia Theme, maybe the Musical "Chess", The Mission or some Ennio Morricone.

    I literally started playing it a day ago.. I was wondering how you didn't have a retro review of the Mafia. I'm still fascinated how the developers achieved all this in 2002. Just a phenomenal game in so many aspects.

    • @tehf00n
      @tehf00n 6 років тому +4

      2002 was around the time of the 1ghz processor at standard, with 256mb ram min usually. You can do a lot with that. The fact they used blend spaces on the lips to make the faces look animated was ace at the time.

    • @tlita93
      @tlita93 6 років тому +3

      Yes mate, I know. I was 9 at the time and me parents still haven't bought me a PC. And when they did, in 2004. it was so awful that it couldn't play any of the legendary PC games like Mafia for example. Counter Strike 1.2 and a couple, literally couple, of other games worked. But all the Need for Speeds, basically anything just wouldn't work, so.... I played almost every game like an asocial nerd guy with my friends. The only reason why I hang out with those couple of guys hah.
      So nowadays I'm like a "graphics whore" when I see a game it's always graphics first, I know, it's an a disgusting way of looking at games. However, I still don't play 90% of the games, even the "pretty" ones. It's just so dumb, limited, unoriginal, storyless, featureless, non-innovative.. So to me watching WoB videos is really interesting, since Mack has such a great experience of games, completely opposite of me in every way, so I always love to hear his critics about the new games or praises about with the retro reviews. :)

      @@tlita93 Did you play Kingdom Come Deliverance? Same lead developer/artist as Mafia, but it is a medieval setting. Story driven RPG, but requires good PC though. The nature looks like nothing extra at first look, until you realise it looks exactly like real thing and does so everywhere on the 4 x 4 km map.

    It was such a good game, so many people rip on it's "open world" for being "empty" but it's complete bollocks, Mafia was never about "filler" side-missions and things like GTA/ubisoft games, the map wasn't meant to be littered with shit filler "collectibles" and other trivial shit.
    It was a great story focused game set in an immersive world that helped elevate the games story and gameplay.
    I loved how they actually had traffic laws, speed limits, etc and cops would chase you and give you tickets, etc. This made the parts where you actually needed to speed an dthings more exciting because of the additional risks.
    Unlike GTA where you can literally just zoom around with no regard to anything.
    It's a shame that Mafia 3 basically threw ALL of this out the window in favor of "grindy" filler copy and pasted bullshit just to get to the "story" missions and threw out all of the traffic laws and other things to making it unrealistic just like GTA.

    • @straightbusta6912
      @straightbusta6912 6 років тому +4

      The 3rd game was a major disappointment for most fans of the Mafia franchise. Myself included.. but even before the game dropped an actual trailer, I had a lot of doubt about its quality. The first red light was when the license was bought off / transfered (or whatever the hell happened there) to 2K. And then, when I got to know that the 3rd game will have completly different developers.
      They took the short way of your typical modern 3rd person sandbox GTA-esque mixture with a somewhat decent story. But I'd never guess that they'd make it out to be a chore when attempting to move the story by doing just the main missions. It fell short to the classic tropes of prioritizing what the casual gamers look fordward to these days.
      Or what the developers can get away with.
      Large map, shitload of uninteresting filler content, repetitive side missions, dozens of glitches on launch with technical issues, messed up PC port and of course.. the downgraded features. Because with sequels years apart these days, we always gotta have 5 new gameplay features and 10 older ones either toned down or removed completly.
      Problem is that these things didn't happen just to the Mafia franchise. More games will follow, or already did. Though we still got some pretty good sequels being released, or an occasional unique game with interesting new concepts done well. Can't be all negative about modern gaming.

      you're comparing ubisoft with rockstar? thats a fuckin blasphemy...
      rockstar dont have filler missions in their games, its all about the story and the cinematics with them...thats why in gta 5 for example you have 70 (GTA SA 100) main story missions, whereas ubisoft, 2k, avalanche and other companies, that are making open world games, put 13 main story missions in their games....

I spent hundreds of hours in the free ride modes doing silly shit and it was so much fun thanks to the living city and physics. And of course the story is simply brilliant.

    Hey Mack, that was a lovely review of a golden oldie... actually a platinum with diamond on top oldie it's that good. I know Patrick Marek as well, and he was one of the devs of Mafia 1. You might be interesting to know that he created the Marek LMP cars in Project CARS 1 and 2. You might want to check them out if you haven't.
    These days he does Assetto Corsa mods and professionally CG for hollywood blockbusters, but he was the one who did the driving line and so on for the AI in that racing mission. This because he was an avid sim racer back than, and he told me that the race was originally much harder even but he was told to make it easier. Go figure! :D

      The ballistics were pretty good. They later used the same but modified engine for Hidden and Dangerous 2, which is in my opinion the absolute best squad based (and realistic) combat game ever made. It did so many things that nothing else seems to have quite gotten right since, or took a good while to manage it. Like rag doll. It was the first game I recall having realistic rag doll where a killed foe actually had mass and didn't just bounce and return to a null state. If you shot someone in the face, they dropped like a sack of shit as you'd expect someone to drop when shot in the face. The sneaking mechanics were pretty damn great too.
      Of all the shitty games we see getting remakes/HD make overs these days the Hidden and Dangerous franchise is something I'd love to see (properly of course). I'd also love to see G-Police and Wipeout make a return, imagine the game you could make now with the modern engines and computing power in something like G-Police? It was pretty damn amazing and head of its time. Just like Mafia.

      I didn't like mafia 2 as much as 1. It had a good potential but since Daniel Vavra left development team lot of feature have been deleted and side missions have been redone in to DLC which is boring. If they realeased the game with all side mission and features that we can see on E3 and development footage it would be game of the year.

      Weeell I'd say Mafia 2 is equally good, but while it fixed things from mafia 1 it also lost something on the way... Replay Value. The Immersion is there, like the original game, the story is still decent, but not having a free-ride mode just breaks things. I mean they give you this immense open sandbox world that is actually far more alive than in mafia 1, so what if you can't have time or incentive to appreciate it. It's like they put a 5 kilogram Cake of your beloved falvour on the table, and you get to enjoy a thin slice like as if you'e on a diet.

It was tense, and absolutely dripped atmosphere. The sound added greatly to this. Tree branches cracking in the wind, and barn doors banging away like a Vietnamese hooker. Phenomenal stuff.
    Also, at the time I remember being blown away with the graphics. Even daft wee things like the cigar/fag smoke and the glowing ends off them.
    As a result of this game, I was really disappointed in Mafia 2 and 3. They just couldn't reach those same heights in which was probably damn near the pinnacle of gaming IMHO.
    Thanks for the fond trip down memory lane.

    Mafia was, and in fact is still one of the best games ever created. PC of course is where to play at its best. Wonderful story, marvelous characters, incredibile graphics for a 2001 game and incredible physics too! My god I fell in love instantly with this game back in the day. Beautiful review by the way

    Been going through your reviews, I love em, and I was a console gamer when this came out I was so envious of PC gamers. Thankfully it did come to console and I got to play it and while im sure alterations were made it was still largely the same game and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
    That being said I think nostalgia might be tinting things here, I did play this not that long ago, tried going through it again before Mafia 2 came out. And I gotta be frank, it did not age at all. I had to bail on it very early on.

    Cannot agree more. I played this game back in 03 and it was such an experience, comparing to the newest mafia and open world game it really lacks the heart and effort of this masterpiece, can't believe they could actually pull this off with so much attention to detail and realistic physics and cutscenes 15 years ago! Developers now need to look back from this game and learn to instil passion in games! hope to see game like this quality again in this generation

    I remember there was ammo loss on this game when reloading! Love small details like that.

    Loved this game. Seem to remember I spent more than an hour on the racing mission, it was that frustrating. That mission is the only downside though in an otherwise great game. Thanks for reviewing this Mack and bringing back golden memories playing this.

    Thanks for the review Mack. This brings back some good memories. The game was really very immersive, I actually felt like a mobster in the 1930s, doing my day-to-day shady business and climbing up the criminal career ladder. The story was good, the missions were very interesting. I like Mafia better than GTA games of the early 2000s, because GTA doesn't take itself seriously. The things you do in GTA games are just ridiculous.
    I remember you once said that you didn't like Mafia 2. Why didn't you like it?

    I was surprised to hear that you didn't like the gun play. A lot of people don't like it but for me it's one of the highlights. The shells hitting the ground. The magazine staying there after it hits the ground. Just feels sexy. And to control the Tommy gun you need to just pull the mouse down while shooting. It's challenging but can be done. I loved the gun fights in this. The first one at the diner/petrol station is one of the most memorable ones for me. I thought it looked so cool. I love how everything looks.

    100% with you on this. I'm always looking for a game that competes with this and I'm yet to find it!
    I remember the race mission, it was almost impossible to complete and, if I recall, they released a patch to reduce the difficulty level because people were going ape shit about it.
    Loved the old Mafia game....so immersive and the story was believable. Love your honest and frank reviews. 👍

    Immersion is the right word. I remember buying this when I was around 14-15, and playing the hell out of it. The mission where you raid a church funeral actually impacted me to the point where I felt so bad about it, I couldn't sleep at night. Intense game!

    Remember the mission, where you had to load a truck with boxes? One box at a time and do it quick enough before the guard comes back. Nowadays, there would just be a cutscene for that.

    Everything you're describing reminds me of GTA SA multiplayer. There was this server called Next Generation Roleplay. Essentially you could do whatever the hell you wanted. So fun. Join a gang, join the police force, army, become a paramedic, become a trucker, pizza delivery boy, drug dealer, drug smuggler, join a street racing club, run for office, become a body guard, grow some weed, become a fucking lawyer, go to court, sit in a jury, etc etc. So fucking great. All of it was so realistic when the players would go along with it. Had to fill up gas in your car, had to call a mechanic (who was another player) if your car was damaged. The admins were ontop of it. It was amazing. The level of immersion was insane. You could literally be whoever you wanted to be.

    Mac forgot to mention as the game progresses and you advance through the decades the cars actually change according to the time period. Fantastic game I played this for hundreds of hours with a force feedback wheel and pedals. I even spent countless hours unlocking all the secret cars in sandbox/challenge mode.
