ZOOM Lenses for Filmmakers - Optics, techniques, effects & lens test of the DZO Catta Ace
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 чер 2024
- Zoom lenses are different. Beloved by some of the greatest filmmakers and frowned upon by others, zoom lenses open creative possibilities and speed up the process. In this episode we show how zoom lenses have been used in cinematography, and why.
We explain optical and mechanical principles of zoom lenses, explore features that are desirable and search for the ideal filmmaking zoom.
We explain and execute a dolly zoom and many other interesting things you can only do with a zoom lens… at lens bending speeds.
We will show you some techniques like extending a camera move or masking zooms.
We also test the affordable DZO Catta ACE Zooms that bring cine zoom features to owner operators.
As a bonus, we are going to use our anamorphic adapters to create anamorphic cine zoom lenses.
So, lay back and zoom in!

The quality of your videos are just astounding! Thank you for all your hard work!
Very happy you feel that way. It is our mission and pleasure. Spread the word!!
As much as I think youtube is great and does a good job of promoting quality content the sheer fact that scope isn't on 10m+ views is criminal! Thank you so much for putting these films out for us to watch, they're fantastic, professionally made and one of the few rare trustworthy sources of niche film making information online
I think you are right and this is a scandal ;-) Well, we cater to a very small audience. Thank you for your kindness and… spread the word
I agree but it's an educational video. Our society is programmed for entertainment. It says a lot about what's important to people. Personal pleasure is what folks want most while learning is secondary. Sad.
@@MediaDivision you don't. they just don't know you exist yet. you are amazing
Media Division is a masterclass in cine lenses. Taught me so much, thank you! Amazing gear to drool at as well. I genuinely think this is the best channel on UA-cam.
So glad you feel that way Sully… spread the word, we could use some more people that think like you
Greatest UA-cam channel
Thats the spirit ;-) Thanks man!!!!
Found y'all recently. Been learning 3D for a number of years for various reasons. Recently got into photography/film with a solid second hand camera.
Absolutely incredible presentation, and super informative at the same time. Not sure if I can fully appreciate how much effort y'all must put in but it definitely shows
Thanks for your kindness Aners… it is a ton of work, but it is also rewarding if it is enjoyed by people like you.
A new MediaDivison vid, today is a good day!!! 👍👍🎉
Better than watching the news today... or any day lately :-( glad you enjoy
I'm not sure why anyone would actually hate zoom lenses. They're a tool, just like any other lens. All have their compromises and it's all down to preference.
Because they are a compromise… not more not less. Most movies don't contain any zoom shots because… well, we just made a video about that
I think the move away from their use in film-making has a lot to do with the prevalence of cameras that have rolling shutter. A rapid zoom in/out, or even a really fast pan get ruined by the jellyness/lean of rolling shutter.
As always great episode
Thanks a lot Timofej!!!
Jaw dropping quality as always 👏🏼
🙌 Thanks a lot Geek… appreciated!
What a shock. Already the most in-depth and thorough deep dive into zooms anywhere on here. BRAVO
Very glad it is to your taste man… thanks a lot again!
As always impressive
Thanks a lot Roberto!!!
Thank you for your dedication in the creating this kind of a educational videos.
It is absolutely out pleasure. Enjoy and spread the word please
Fantastically-shot and informative as always. DZOfilm definitely partnered with the right person to showcase their lenses.
Thanks a lot … I hope DZO gets some love for partnering up. We can't do this without support from all sides
Here comes another banger from the best technical camera show
Thanks Slim Bim… appreciated!
Love this topic. I recently found him by chance in a filmmakers subreddit after I’ve already been following this channel for over a year and he responded to me. Great guy, great channel, super funny, entertaining and informative. One of my favorite channels on YT.
Thanks man... that is kind of you to say. Of course I answer... having a great community with like minded filmmakers is what the whole channel is really about. Appreciate you hanging around with us.
Wow one of the most incrdible reviews, in quality and detail. Thank you dearly for your service to our community.
My pleasure Nick... trying to make everything worth your time.
These videos offer great in depth knowledge, ultra high quality, great atmosphere and the length is also a perfect compromise between too long and too short. Thank you for the effort and time you spent on creating these videos 👍🏻
Glad you agree with our production style. Totally our pleasure man. Thanks for hanging & engaging!
Thank´s once more for your outstanding work! Even as a humble hobby photographer I´m always excited to see a new video from you. In my opinion this is THE cinematic channel on UA-cam that hardly can´t be bet. Wish you all the best!
Thanks a lot... very happy we are that in your eyes. Wish we had more people like you around.
I love your channel. The content for aspiring film makers is inspirational
Thanks Jason… very happy you do. We couldn't ask for more. Thhanks for beeing around
The quality of your lessons is unmatched. Kubrick would be proud of you!
That is more that we could ever hope for. I really hope he would have a little nod for us in store... that would have made my day, month, year, life ;-) Thanks a lot man!
Each of your videos is a real masterpiece❤❤❤
ThNks a lot man… appreciated. Always trying
Love the channel no egoes just plain art
Happy you see our work in that way man.... Thank you!
Wow....after watching this i want to own a cinema lens....that parfocal property is awesome. Great work as always !
Totally.. but it does come at a price. If you can use one.. go for it.
Media Division!!!! You're back. I was worried you'd lose inspiration after the absolute masterpiece that was anamorphic 1 and 2 and for some reason you don't have a million subs.
I was just showing my whole family those two videos. I can't tell you how awesome your creations are.
Thanks a lot man… don't worry. That was not my expectations with that subject. Still, we surely could use way more subs and views. Say sorry to your family from me.
22:25 This could win an Oscar✨
… I wouldn't go THAT far… but OK… I thank the academy ;-)
Funny enough, I just rented a Catta Zoom for my FX3 for the weekend. Excited to see the tests you guys do!
We like it… I hope you will as well.
Wait...What? This channel always blow my mind!
Thanks man… always trying to improve
Another extremely intriguing video from you guys. I rewatch the Anamorphic episodes just like I do my favorite TV episodes. I always learn something new and look forward to the next video! Cheers.
Haha same man. I love the canon fd episode
Thats exactly like we hope it would be... darn, I wish more would feel this way and we could do this full time all thee time. It is very rewarding for us on an emotional level, but you can't feed children with that. Very happy you enjoy
@@mavillejones5908 so glad man... still one of my favourites, too

Thanks man, always trying.... and.... where are you??? Well hidden, especially for a bear ;-)
I really appreciate your great productions! love from China🇨🇳
Thanks Roland… appreciate the appreciation ;-)
I don't dedicate to filming, but this video blows my mind. It just mesmerizes what can be done with zooms.
Glad you enjoy Pablo… Zooms give indeed pretty awesome options for filmmaking
It's always a pleasure when you upload, Nicholas! Thanks again for a wonderful episode.
Thanks Aron… appreciated. Thanks for hanging
Always exciting to watch your videos.

Words cannot describe how much I love this channel, Thank you for another amazing video.
Aw… thanks man… very much appreciated. Our pleasure
I really missed your videos, jumped in this one the second the notification popped up, fantastic video and in depth presentation, keep up your amazing work.
Thanks man... don't. worry, next one is in the works already
I love you, guys! Asalways - perfect! Best wishes from Latvia 🇱🇻🖐🏻🙂
Thanks a lot... glad you like it... and the channel. Thanks for being around.
Amazingggg Loved it bro. The Quality of Video is Perfect and to be honest you deserve millions of subscribers . Love from Pakistan
Thanks man.... we wouldn't mind, so, tell UA-cam.
Awesome, this clip describes so many aspects of zoom lenses in such an easy to absorb way, impressive work!
Thanks man... during research I was surprised how much info I was missing thinking I knew enough about zooms. Hope we where able to take others along on the journey
The zollies used in Severance are a great example too; with just white behind the actor it gives a different effect. Also, great job explaining the complexities of zoom lenses. We going to see more of your Angie 28-70mm in action?
interesting... havn't seen that, yet. Thank you. We already did a test of the Angie in SCOPE Chapter Three. As a spherical lens itself it can't hold a candle to the ACEs of course. The very short focus through makes it a pain to work with. I rather use my Contax zoom
Incredible as always, perfect. thanks
Thanks a lot Devi
Thanks for your incredible content! I get super excited every time you upload and I always learn new things with your videos.
Happy to hear that! That is all we are working and hoping for. Thanks for beeing around
You guys are top notch. Pleasing to watch, can’t wait for new episodes!

And the next one is soon to come, too. Already deep in it.
The sound of that motorized precision @22:29 is just absolutely phenomenal... I can't thank you enough for being the inspiration I needed to start my own film making journey. Du und dein Team, Ihr seid einfach der absolute HAMMER!
Vielen Dank für Deine Unterstützung Max... und Dein netten Worte. Bin sehr froh einen Unterschied für Dich gemacht zu haben!
Your videos are just love letter to cinema and to cinema technology
I hope they are.... Thanks Torronto
not jsut a lens review... you're lecturing filmmaking universe with single product! Media Division is way to underrated. Deserves soooooooooo much more!! Thanks for sharing :)
We where hoping for something like that… how boring would a lens test alone be?! Yeah… I wish we would get a bit more attention… spread the word please and thanks for sharing.
Great episode as always!
Thanks a lot TechnoPilot... and as always, thank you for your support. Hope you enjoy!!!
Thanks for the video. This was excellent. I love your stuff.

Thanks a lot Marcel.... and thanks a lot for your support ;-)
Love your channel. Best of the best. Thank you!
Thanks a lot! Glad you think so. Spread the word
Wonderful video. Much appreciated!
Appreciate your kindness HipHop… thanks for hanging!
While a borderline 33 minute commercial...I don't mind in the slightest. I forget the previous episode (anamorphic?) where the big guns wouldn't loan MD a set of lenses for testing, for shame...a manufacturer making a decent product providing said product for review/education is splendid in this case. One day when I need a cine lens set...I'm gonna be reaching for a DZO.
Exactly… we couldn't have done this episode without a manufacturer offering their lenses… and they deserve a little love back for that. Thanks for hanging Frollard
@@MediaDivision likewise, thank you for passionately sharing what you do. This is a look into a world at such a granular scale that most people never even approach... Even just glossing over it.
Great video as usual!
Thanks JD
As always amazing video! The lenses look great, but much nicer is the light from the para :D
Thanks a lot. Big lights sources for the win ;-)
Brilliant as usually thanks
Thanks man... totally our pleasure
Great stuff as usual Nik
Thanks Nick… wait for the next one… that will be the big one ;-)
This is still the best produced content on UA-cam.
Thanks man... appreciated
Wow, very impressive episode! Are you guys still planning on making a video on vintage Leica R lenses? I really enjoyed the videos on vintage Canon FD lenses and Contax Zeiss lenses.
Thank you. Actually no... we don't owe a set and the Leica R (while good lenses) lack a good cinematic story to tell. Unlike the Super speed or K35 relations, there is nothing of that kind with the Leica R.
Solid info even though it was a paid sponsor product, great presentation.
Thanks....see it this way: We couldn't have just bought or rented a cine zoom for the episode. Input and help from manufacturers is essential to give you everything around it... and for that, the deserve a test and some love from us
Wow that dolly zoom intro hits hard.
Glad you think so! Thanks
Another fantastically done video. Just the amount of work that had to go into showing the image through all the lens elements, that detail is very impressive!
Thanks Sam… it is based on the Same simulation we used for our SCOPE series and that made it much easier to pull off… took us "only" a days work. A long day that is.
@@MediaDivision Ah, even then it took a long day. Most people don't know how much work 3D visuals require.
That Clockwork Orange milkbar shot is a combination zoom out and dolly back, a great example of subtly hiding a zoom.
I wasn't aware that there was a zoom in there at all… and it is really not visible. Do you have a source that confirms that?
@@MediaDivision You can tell from the compression of space in the opening close up, there would be a lot more distortion if the focal length stayed the same.
Also this is from Malcom McDowell:
We shot in the Korova Milkbar, the opening shot of the film, and the young lad on the end Mike Tarn, was sitting there. Warren and I were friends, Warren Clarke who plays Dim, and we were kind of bored sitting there waiting for the lighting - it was endless. So we said to this Mike guy, "Is there anything that you can do that is going to get you noticed?" We're winding this guy up really being very wicked. He goes, "I don't know. I can flutter my eyelids like this." I went, "That is so cool! What do you think Warren?" "Yeah! Yeah!" Stanley's ready - OK action! Big shot here (on his face), zoom lens and a pull back on a dolly. Suddenly, "Michael!! What the hell are you doing?!" "Well, he told me to!" "Don't look at me! I didn't tell him." Ruined the shot. Goofing around - Stanley didn't like that. We teased him a lot.
Thank you... where do you got that text from?
@@MediaDivision there’s an ASC interview with John Alcott about Clockwork Orange with a brief mention of it:
“One outstanding use of this lens system is Clockwork’s signature opening shot, which begins as a tight close-up on Alex’s sneering face and then slowly zooms out as the camera dollies back, revealing his trio of thuggish companions and the bizarre interior of their favorite haunt, the Korova Milkbar.”
The article and another one online talk about the lens being a modified Angenieux 16mm 20:1 zoom with a 1.6x extender on it to cover 35m.
I can’t seem to post the links in the comments section, but feel free to PM me for them.
Thank so much.
Wonderful video
Totally our pleasure... glad to have you here!
Great video sharing!!! Thank you
With pleasure man… thanks for hanging
What an episode.
I will be honest, I had an irrational fear of zoom lenses. I always found them cumbersome, inconsistent and 'slow'. But as most fears, it roots from lack of knowledge.
I have been enlightened! Thank you for making this; The incredible production quality makes it a pleasure to watch, as always.
Thanks… well, Zooms will always be a bit of a compromise… but the possibilities are worth it if you need/want zooms.
Excellent. Thank you!
Totally our pleasure Fuzzy
Feels like a movie, looks like one. Congrats
Thanks a lot man… appreciated. Hopefully we grow with each of our projects.
Amazing video! I have the pleasure of working with two FUJINON 24-180MM T2.6 lenses in a studio setting and they are simply incredible!

I am indeed a huge fan of yours.....is there some way at some stage to get kind of master classes....kein scheiss....you are believably german....would be cool.
But i bet 90 %of the people watching the vids do not perceive the level of mastership.....
Ich überlege schon lange ob man da was machen kann… das wäre dann aber eher in Form von Life-Broadcast. Es muss sich halt rechnen, und das ist das Problem. Der Channel rechnet sich so gar nicht.

Zooms rock!
For anyone with a crop sensor e-mount camera, the Fujinon MK zooms are still amazing, parfocal, and can be found used for a good price compared to new. FX-30, a1, a7iv, a7Rv are all great matches!
