A wife of a friend passing a charity shop spotted a M&S jumper brand new. She paid a fiver and then took it to M&S and got a “refund” of £60. She took great delight in her actions. I found it ugly and distanced myself from her. She did not notice, years later she remarked to another friend that we werent associating with her any more and being “funny”. Later on she got involved in a fraud that resulted in her and her husband losing all of their wealth including pensions. Ironic.

This has happened to me when Evri left a laptop, in a box with a picture of the laptop on it, on the doorstep, without knocking. The tracking info indicates that at the time it was "delivered" I was sitting in the sofa only meters from the door. When I noticed the notification saying it had been delivered, it had gone. A neighbour confirmed they saw it being delivered, and the courier's "proof of delivery" was a photo of it on the doorstep.
I complained to the eBay seller, who refunded me. Presumably they got the courier to pay them for it.

This happened recently with my daughter's engagement ring. I was in the house, in fact they (RM) had delivered a package only an hour before (same chap). This time he left the package behind the food waste bin. Luckily it turned out it was the ring box, not the actual ring (which had been in the earlier package safely delivered into my hands). Anyway, he and a bunch of workers grabbed a bunch of heavy items and decided to go get the stuff back themselves, although he did call the police to tell them what they were doing and they couldn't promise the state the thieves would be in afterwards, so maybe the police would like to actually go to the address and intervene. @@Valehass It depends on where you look. Some of the "news" pages that pop up when I open a browser are heavily one-sided towards the wealthy and the landlords and will bring up the dark sides of tenants. On the other hand, the same "news" sources seem to be totally unaware of issues that are in the news, on youtube or the internet, esp. those stories that show bad landlords and poor treatment of tenants. I am sorry for your friends and I agree it must be a nightmare for them, but I have also worked with people who need housing and who have had real problems with private landlords and unaffordable rents. To be fair to your friends, I believe that tenants agreements should include protections for the landlord and the property. Perhaps everyone should have to provide a bond or indemnity which is forfeit in the case of damage to the property. If tenants had to provide reasonable identification, the problem of tenants who run could be dealt with, at least in part, by a database which would identify such unreliable tenants and which would prevent them from being able to repeat their behaviour.
On the other side, landlords should ensure the property is up to a liveable standard and that tenants can't simply be evicted without good cause.
The problem with housing is that everyone has an anecdote about individuals, but the housing crisis is a national one, such that there are too many empty properties and too many homeless and not enough will to solve either problem. Remember that some MPs complained about increasing benefits and about benefit claimants but failed to disclose that they were raking it in as landlords to benefit claimants. When some people are making money from the suffering of others, there is no reason to sort things out.

Some years ago I had a few months as a courier, I got back to the depot one evening and was asked to deliver a large box of, what turned out to be cosmetics, urgently to a local customer. My instructions were to go to the office at the stables and deliver it there. When I got there the office was open but customer nowhere to be seen. So I phoned my depot and was instructed to leave it in the office, which I did. I got back into my van, and something seemed not quite right, so I went back and took several photos of the package and surrounding area.
By the time I got back to the depot, less than ten minute drive, the customer had phoned in and reported non delivery.

The police should be prosecuting this, but as usual its easier to police people's thoughts and speech than actual crimes like theft, or fraud. It's no wonder so few people respect the police. If the police do nothing then the traders should work with the card and delivery companies, and start blacklisting the people who do this, so they are unable to buy anything online.

@EgoChip I agree that some people genuinely do not receive their packages or are not informed of where they were actually delivered. But admitting that immediately creates a problem. If the police did investigate, how would they be able to tell if I am someone who honestly did not get the item or that I am someone who is lying? If the delivery driver is capable of lying about their own dishonesty or incompetence, they are capable of lying to the police. Even if the police search my home and find nothing, that does not prove that the item was not delivered. Even if the police suspect dishonesty, they cannot claim I stole it if they cannot find it. They are not likely to want to search entire homes and outhouses, just in case an item was misplaced, nor are they likely to be able to demand that all the neighbours allow their homes to be searched.
If the traders do decide to work together with the card and delivery companies, how will they distinguish the honest customer who never got their items from the dishonest ones who only claimed they did not? Finally, my experience is that the delivery companies, themselves, will do anything to hide the failure of their drivers, even to the extent of changing the name of their company or preventing customers from reporting poor delivery. (A certain company named after a Greek God has reinvented itself and has done so repeatedly because their performance does not improve.) The same thing applies to some big companies that employ their own drivers, they are not necessarily going to admit to failures in their system. For example, I can no longer review books from a certain online bookstore and marketplace because I pointed out some potentially fraudulent behaviour in my reviews. I was in the right, but the seller removed all my reviews and not just the few offending ones.
I would love to see the problem solved, but how are the customers to prove their honesty and how are the sellers to ensure they do not punish the innocent?

I returned them asking for a like for like replacement (as I actually liked them). The retailer did exactly that and I have had no issues with the replacement at all in the five years I have worn them.

What seems to be a growing problem are collectible items (for example a model aircraft engine) are sold and the customer subsequently returns the item for a refund. When the parcel is received and opened it contains a chunk of concrete or half a brick. eBay and PayPal aren’t interested because the “item” was returned.
Another thing that is happening (commonly with a certain carrier,PB) where they claim items are “contaminated” and must be destroyed, they later turn up on eBay, often with the original photographs.

After some conversation, he found out that the expensive TV was shipped with the label on the packaging - no outer box.

There are a few occasions, however that have caused some concern when I have received notification of dispatch, but the tracking for sometimes weeks after shows no sign of the goods.
If a trader on eBay, for example, prints a postage label, the system immediately marks the item as dispatched, whereas it may actually remain in the trader's depot or not even exist at all (perhaps due to being out of stock).
Luckily this does not happen very often, but "missing" goods are not always fraud on the part of the consumer.

What I find interesting about the balance of probability is that it doesn't make logical sense. For example, I was cycling to work many years ago and was hit by a pickup truck which didn't stop as it approached the roundabout, I was cycling past the front of the vehicle and it hit me. I could see it wasn't going to stop as I passed the left turn off from the roundabout but was going at a speed which meant if I braked at that moment, I would have halted in front of the vehicle and I couldn't speed up enough to clear the lane, so I knew the vehicle wasn't going to stop and I was going to be hit, then I was.
I was in hospital for just over a week, off work for a couple of months, then lost my job due to my injuries meaning I couldn't do the job properly anymore (the company made this clear to me as to why they were sacking me, but said they obviously couldn't record this as the reason, and I agreed that they were right, I couldn't do the job now so they were paying for another member of staff to be on shift with me just because I couldn't do the job and as a small, new company they couldn't afford to keep hiring someone just to be on shift with me to do my job).
I decided to sue the driver, so the police, who closed the case at the scene when I was put in the ambulance, lost my bike and the notebook of the officer at the scene, reopened the case when I told them I'm suing the driver.
They did an investigation and found the driver guilty, yet my solicitor said that we should accept some liability because it will look good to the court. I said that if the driver has been found 100% guilty following the police investigation where we were all interviewed under caution etc, then a civil court where it is based on probabilities should be obviously 100% as well, but the solicitor disagreed, which confused me.
The criminal case had things like the driver saying the passenger said look out, bike and that I came off the pavement in front of his truck (which, given where in the road my bike was hit would have meant I would have to have turned sharp right, cycled out into the roundabout then sharp left to be in front of the vehicle), the passenger said he was asleep, heard a thud on the bonnet, opened his eyes and saw a cyclist being struck and said look out bike.
I stupidly wasn't wearing hi-vis clothing and it was dark, but I did have reflectors on the wheels, and front and back of my bike and front and back lights.
The solicitor said I should accept 30% liability for not wearing bright clothing, so that they can knock it to 40%, and that I have the right to challenge this for more money but a judge will then see me as being greedy and could throw out the case and it's no win no fee and because I received an offer and rejected it I would be liable to pay the fee myself, so they strongly advise I accept any offer made to me, which is what I did, they named an amount and said this is 60% of the amount they would put forward as the payout and I accepted it. Mainly because this had gone on for two years by this point of me every week thinking about, talking about and filling in forms etc about the accident and I felt if I accept I can finally put it all behind me. But it did confuse me that the police can find someone 100% guilty, yet they are only 60% guilty in a civil case...

I used to work for a national chain of retail shops in customer strategy... they factored in a double-digit percentage of financial losses for theft (in-store and delivery). For example, 15% was factored into their accounting projections for theft. And this is factored into the markup in the price of the goods sold. Part of the reason for the price rises in recent years is not only inflation and profiteering but also the increase in theft write-offs. So, for example, the previous 15% write-off has now increased to 20% or even 30%.

Not to make excuses for the disgraceful behaviour of some companies selling on Amazon, who evidently do engage in this sort of scam. Royal Mail was a poor example to choose as an organisation carrying out private prosectutions. They prosecuted numerous sub-postmasters for fraud and theft which were actually caused by failures in their Horizon computer system. They and their suppliers lied in court by claiming there were no issues or faults in the system. People were wrongly imprisoned, forced into bankruptcy , lost their homes and, in at least one instance, took their own life. The CCRC described the prosecutions as an affront to the public conscience and the Court of Appeal said the Post Office had acted in such a way as to subvert the integrity of the criminal justice system and public confidence in it. It took well over a decade for this scandal to start to be corrected and shows the dangers of a big organisation, with all it's wealth and resources, taking on the little guy in a criminal court.

Sadly that will not happen because the people you can prosecute for "bad words on the internet" are a lot more English than the people you can prosecute for actual crimes.
So their crime-statistics would become "less English" and a lot more diverse, revealing a very sad truth to British public.

And after all of this, absolutely nothing happened after, not a single follow-up. And I've done all the research for them providing information about who the guy was, ways to find him, family members, car probably owned by girlfriend... They even said before the statement was finalized that they're pretty sure they know who he is and how to find him...

I gave each item an extra week or two to allow for Brexit delays, and (with it still having not arrived) then contacted the seller. In both cases, I got a refund within a few hours. And then the item arrived the very next day.
In both these cases, I contacted the seller so I could return the refund to them; but I was uncomfortably surprised at how surprised and grateful they were that I did this.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I like to be able to sleep at night.

Sounds like UKs return policies are more equally applied across all stores. In the US, it varies widely from store to store. The smaller the retailer the stiffer the return policy to help prevent fraud.

    • @taras6806

It is largely legislation not policy. Stores can extend the return policy but not lessen it or remove it.

Maybe the delivery companies could blacklist addresses that have a high % of 'missing' parcels.
Perhaps anything for those addresses could then be made 'click and collect' only.

Very interesting - thanks. I can't stand dishonesty and hope more traders pursue fraudulent customers vigorously. I traded online for many years and was always honest and fair with my customers - simply because I know the difference between right and wrong. Fortunately none of my customers ever tried to defraud me.

Isn't easier and cheaper to issue a small claims against the fraudster? This prosecution mechanism sounds very expensive.

I've sold several small items on ebay that have been delivered but they claimed they didn't get the item.
I have messaged them saying ebay has said to wait a few days to see if it appears.
I've also said because of several items going missing recently the post office is questioning me about it and would it be ok to give me post office their details so they can investigate.
In every case the items have suddenly been found with a neighbour or delivered later the same day.
    Oh what a surprise.

We’ve got clear CCTV footage of burglars faces, inside and outside the building removing goods.
They’ve not only been back several times, but it appears they live in the hostel across the road.
I mean, this has got to be an open goal as far as the police are concerned right?
Took them 2 weeks to respond, and then they’ve had the CCTV for 5 weeks. Still waiting.
Did you see how fast they moved to arrest the people who chopped the Sycamore tree down though….. 😂

Recently I purchased something on line I watched the tracking of said article and it said it was delivered to my address when it patently wasn’t, so it is I’m my view that some small companies say they have delivered when they haven’t sent the items and enjoy the money they have made and they then disappear and start up the same scam under another name

its a pain, sometimes the driver just doesnt find the address (or the correct address) and someone who is less than scrupulous accepts the delivery, and you dont know until you get the "parcel delivered" notification. 4 or 5 times this has happened to me, but then trying to find out where its been delivered and how to sort out the fact that youve wasted a day waiting for the delivery and noone ever turned up ...... then you hear about all this going on, and looking at a lot of the comments neither the customer nor the seller can win.

Quick qustion re receiving parcels etc. Amazon for example. Parcel arrives at Parcel Locker, couriers have issues with using them and gives it to a random resident taht may live near the apartment. Yet Amazon tracking says given to resident, yet orginal receiver never receives parcel. It has happen to me. Luckly Amazon so far have been good about this.
Its just an example that given to resident does not actual mean that resident has received the parcel Tracking may say so just because of a lazy courier. Couriers should provide proof that they have delivered parcel such as photo of locker. with number etc,

These Card Issuer chargebacks result in the trader being charged for administration, which can exceed the value of the goods or services. Some businesses lose more: Rural businesses may have to travel many miles to a distribution hub. I know of such businesses that have given up trading online because of this issue.

The 2 times I've made a claim with the bank, the bank have sided with the retailer and even going as far as accusing me of fraud. One of the times I could prove it was delivered to the wrong address as the photo was not my address nor was the person in the photo. I know who stole it and included it in my evidence the police didn't care and I lost out on £1,599. This goes both ways. The second time it was left outside my house and stolen, I could prove this with footage so did infact get a refund.

Eventually card issuers will start assuming the majority of claims are bogus and stop fighting for the consumer. Basically a criminal minority will make life difficult for the law abiding majority, similar to how a few benefits cheats have made life difficult for every disabled or disadvantaged person.

  • @dennis8196
    @dennis8196 Рік тому

Civil recovery can be very very effective and by using some of the 3rd party companies to manage the administration you can recover the cost of the theft (fraud is still theft by virtue of the intent to deprive someone of goods, money or services), and the costs for your time to fully investigate and document the crime. The costs for the 3rd party service are also added to the recovery. The award is paid to the court to ensure it is paid in full.
From personal experience though it's worth being extremely thorough in documenting the incident in chronological order and ensuring the identity of the person who committed the offence is who you believe it is. These days with many services and purchases being done online you can easily be tricked in a double whammy of ID fraud too. Resulting in your recovery of losses being pinned on an innocent party that on paper for all intents and purposes is actually someone else. It's trivial to steal and use someone else's ID leaving multiple victims.

I recently bought some items from Amazon and they sent 2 of each item but i was only charged for 1. There is nothing on the Amazon website for reporting this when you want to send the items back. I eventually found out how to contact customer services and let them know and that i wished to return the extra items. Even though they didn't make it easy, it would still be fraudulent to keep them. I know that some people have items delivered and had them stolen from the doorstep
