God, this game hurt so bad! After we scored on the first play of the game I thought we were going to run away with it. Damn you Iowa! No matter how good we are you guys ALWAYS give us issues.
Observations from 14 years later. That was truly an elite defense we had that year. Aside from that one play, we shut you down that day. Hard to think about all that's happened to both programs since. The defense still plays lights out, but the Iowa offense always is always the best defense on the field, holding itself to about 10 per game with Brian Ferentz as OC.
Thank you for posting this! I was looking for the opening all week long. I am a Penn State fan for life and the opening gave me chills. I will be honest, you guys own us right now. Good luck the rest of the season, but this is to all hawkeye fans. Relax a little. Its the first big ten game. Hope you guys are watching Michigan and Ohio state. They look good. Plus, at the end of the year, We must all come together for the bowl season. The Big Ten will bounce back!
Penn State is always difficult . Nice footage , as I live far away from the US - Chile . But lived there for 16 years , and huge Hawkeye fan . I remember when Ferentz first arrived there in the late 90 s , the team slowly but surely began to take on a really potent level of playing . I left Iowa in 1999 , and still remember the good ole days of Hayden Fry .....
Oh god, don't remind me! Although, to be fair, it was #1 OSU vs #15 Iowa...we were utterly overmatched in that game. I do love the intro to this video...
Nice to see your support psuownz! I hope so too...Ohio State is overrated (not to say that Iowa probably wasn't too). Iowa will win the Big Ten if they beat OSU, but all stats aside, they just deserve Pasadena more this year!! And Ferentz is STILL coach of the year, hands down...even with the one loss.
Okay, this is what we need to do...send our 2009 Defensive Line back to 2006. I've been following the Hawkeyes since the mid 80's and Hayden Fry had some great defensive teams...but so far this team is looking like it could go down as our greatest. Now if only we could get our wide receivers to catch Stanzi's passes...
It's hard to follow all the posts with the fast flow of everything. But in that case, Texas vs Iowa in that Alamo Bowl was a great game. I was hoping that the 6-6 Iowa team that everybody was overlooking could pull it off. At least Iowa showed that it was no mismatch like people were thinking, Iowa looked like the team that started 5-1 and had a lot of potential, and not the team that fell apart later on in the year.
Congrats Iowa, you guys are a phenomenal team, to go into Beaver Stadium and pull the rug out from under our feet like that. Don't be alarmed that it was close though, #4 Michigan needed a fourth down stop, clinging to a 17-10 lead, to keep an unranked Penn State from upsetting them in Beaver Stadium in 2006. And yes, I think Iowa is definitely going to be Big Ten champs. I'll be rooting for you to win out, especially in November against the Buckeyes and in the Rose Bowl or BCS NCG.
That is true, Penn State's defense played well until the momentum had completely shifted, and it looked after that blocked punt like two different teams had taken the field. Anyways, it would be great to see Iowa win the Big 10 (realistically, it won't be us, I just don't want it to be Ohio State AGAIN) and maybe even do to Florida's flashy offense what we did to Miami's in 1986.
Everybody needs corn, too, as another said. I'd like to eat some fresh picked Iowa corn sometime. But I'd only get to do that if I made the trip to Kinnick and decided to trek outside of the Iowa City area. I wonder if it's even better than the Pennsylvania corn we get from some local farmers every year. We buy so much of it that we end up canning or vacuum packing it and freezing it so we can eat it all through the winter and spring, then buy lots more every harvest season.
God, what a fucking game. Wish I could find a download of this, just so I could watch it again. It was such a great game, for both teams. Coming down to the fourth quarter punt block for the win.
Only one loss in a decade. 2 upsets in a row. I'd say we have established domination over Penn State. Even though we finished ranked higher this year, Penn State was 11-1 and we were 10-2 not counting our matchup. They had it at home and we were unranked. Then the matter in which we won. After that shock bomb on their first play, they had absolutely nothing. Nothing. We dominated. Score didn't show it but it was clear during the second quarter that Penn State wouldn't see another point.
3:33 is absolutely beautiful. Clark has what appears to be a huge gap in the middle with which to run a draw play...but the Hawkeye D close in on him immediately.
Iowa dominated the second and fourth quarters, PSU dominated the first, the third quarter was a wash (both teams had trouble moving the ball). But still, no need to split hairs. This Iowa team looks like they could win the Big 10 outright and not worry about sharing with the Buckeyes. I'd like to see Ohio State not be able to share another conference title this year.
6:43-6:47 is the best part :) PSU thought they had this game wrapped up before it began...just because they were #5 and playing in Happy Valley. Don't ever underestimate IOWA!!!!
This weekend should be a blowout and I think it will be our second(ISU) of the year... Vandenburg has to make good decisions but the running game will take over with a healthy Robinson and Wegher... Anything can happen but I think our defense will show up along with a good amount of offense!! You have to remember Minnesota almost lost to S Dakota St in there 11th game of the season.. Pulled out a big one by 3 points.. Hawks should be ok this weekend!
It would be a good football... This is exactly how Iowa likes it, getting no credit when credit is due... And you keep bringing up Nothern Iowa... They are the best team in the FCS.. They would give most teams ranked from 15-25 a tough game.. It's also somewhat of a rivalry.. We also play up to our competition, and if that's the case then it bodes well against a team like USC but they aren't the same team they have been the past 5 years! Frosh at QB is tough...
Believe me, most PSU fans felt shafted over that. But the truth is, Florida State got hot that year and got in the Orange Bowl over a technicality of beating a heavily favored Virginia Tech. But it's still a win against a conference champion. And before you laugh it off, we won the game with injured key players, and still got up for the game. Oftentimes when that happens like with 2004 Cal, 2005 Oregon, and 2008 Texas Tech, the "better" team plays flat and loses.
You're right, shame on us for thinking that we had a chance for beating Iowa. I expected PSU to win 14-9 or 14-10 at home against an equally good Iowa team with our home advantage helping us. And we beat the 2007 Iowa team which was 6-6 (4-4), fifth in the Big Ten and bowl eligible, better than some teams that got into bowls. We were 8-4 (4-4). And don't say "get over it", that's the most tired, overused comeback there is. I AM over it, but apparently Iowa fans are not.
You say that but everyone also forgets that Iowa has beaten the SEC in 3 of the last four ball games!! Florida 37-17, LSU 30-25, SC 31-3... Those sound like "big ten ass whoopings" to me! No doubt the SEC is the toughest conference in the nation, but Iowa should not be overlooked!! Ferentz always has his team ready to play!!!
Also, remember that Penn State beat Ohio State 17-10, squatted on the ball after that field goal, the same Ohio State that very nearly beat Texas, losing only 22-25, supposedly Texas and USC were leagues ahead of Penn State. I know transitive property is weak, but Penn State performed consistantly that year, blowing out many of their opponents (including being up 56-3 at halftime at Illinois on homecoming). Penn State was a legit team in 2005, it's not our fault we were stuck with Florida State.
yeah i remember tate forcier. but you need to remember the ENTIRE iowa defensive line! hasn't let up a rushing touchdown all season. all i can say is good luck...you're gunna need it!!
@HereComeTheHawkeyes Very true, especially when you look at how bad the bottom of the ACC is. Little known fact, the CAA, an FCS conference, went 2-1 vs the ACC. I think you are right though that many teams could have beaten Georgia Tech in the Big Ten, since the B10 was a pretty solid conference in 2009, even the bowl losses were close (NW outplayed Auburn and should've won, Minnesota was a point away, and even Michigan State, a mega-underdog, led heading into the 4th against Texas Tech).
For the record the # 1 rushing offense by stats was Nevada, Ga Tech was 2nd and Navy was 3rd. Also Navy averaged about 74 passing yds per game and Ga Tech averaged like 135 yd. Obviously that doesnt mean one is better than the other, but people should know what they are talking about.
@ifrickinrulerome - Ricky going down was hard to take as a Hawkeye fan. It coulda been their yr. Also, in 2002 they were very close. It will be hard for a school like Iowa to get a shot in the NC game, but the fact they have come close gives me hope. Go HAWKS!!!
Depends on who you play, if you play someone like New Hampshire, it's pretty easy to build up a crazy score on Varsity or even All American mode. It's also possible to hold your opponent to no first downs (I've only ever done that against a cupcake, though, but I've held some great teams to one first down, something that would be seen as unreal if done to even a cupcake in real football).
Well if you're not NCG quality yet, you will be by year's end, Iowa always improves through the year. But right now, what you have is a championship winning defense. Let's use 1986 as an example, offense sells tickets and can win games with style, like Miami did, but defense wins championships and sometimes wins games ugly but gets the job done, like Penn State did in 1986. Penn State ended up beating Miami 14-10. Could a similar Hawks upset of the Gators happen this year? That would be cool.
@GoodOlRudy where are you from man? Born and raised in the CRIA, 20 min from Iowa city. Couldn't have explained Iowa football any better. We will never be as talented as the next team but god damn you hate to see us on the schedule. Messed up thing is i would feel the same thing about the blue hens if i were born in delaware. Thank god i was born in iowa. I hope hype doesn't kill us again
@MrThejbusy Your right but we have a secret weapon... MARCUS COKER. I'm from the DC area where Coker is from, i've known about him since highschool. I was so pumped when he went to Iowa. As you know in his first start he had over 200 yards and 2 tds. We're under the radar just like you said, which is always dangerous, but even more so when Kirk Ferentz is your coach! Go Hawks!!!
Is it possible to remake this video with the announcers announcing the game without the music? Or just post the entire game on youtube please? This was a great game and I would love to watch it again in its entirety.
I think you should have put put "upsets" in quotes. As a Penn State fan, I have to say, Iowa was the better team that night, and Penn State looked like the 2003 team (a team that can hang with anybody but also find a way to lose to anybody, going 3-9 (1-9) and losing to a 10-3 (5-3) Iowa 26-14 in Kinnick who finished #8). Good luck to your Hawks, I hope you knock off Ohio State and win the NCG. I just hope I'm wrong and Penn State goes bowling (I think PSU goes 5-7 (1-7) or 6-6 (2-6) right now).
@BullzOnParade17 I imagine that it would have looked like Iowa's victory over Penn State. Florida would have led early, then Iowa would have adjusted, then the slumbering offense would have woke up and beaten Florida something like 34-24. We saw that with Stanzi there's no hole Iowa can't get out of. Iowa trailed 21-7 at halftime against Indiana, then still trailed 24-14 after three, but ended up going from losing big to actually blowing out Indiana 42-24.
@Finne116 If the Hawks don't let success go to their heads and stay healthy, we can be very good. I think the offensive line will start out average and be really good by the time October comes. Riley Reiff could be Iowa's next stud offensive lineman. Our linebackers will be just fine. Tarpanian was a stud on Special Teams last year.
Just go look at the site.. you played Iowa in the 06 outback bowl... It doesn't matter if was part of the 05-06 season.. Just go look at the outback bowl site or ESPN
@MVillani1985 The beginning of the new Iowa run began in the last four games of the 2000 season. True Freshman Bob Sanders made his first start against Wisconsin. We almost beat a Badgers team that finished the year in the Top 25. Then we went on the road and beat Penn State. After the Big win at Penn State, we came home and beat a really good Northwestern team. Had Northwestern beaten us, they would've went to the Rose Bowl. We finished the season by losing to Minnesota.
Actually, I think Texas does pretty good this year, I was just being a bit of a smart ass with the four losses because of your assumption that PSU goes 8-4 or worse (they might, though), although I do think Texas loses two or possibly three. Remember 2005? Purdue was a preseason pick to win the Big Ten but finished 5-6, and Penn State was unranked until mid October. Who knows what could happen at year's end? Texas could win out, or they could lose up to four, but I do see Texas losing some.
@Finne116 Iowa was pitiful their first two years but had bare cupboards to work with. In 2001 we saw the beginning of the new Iowa run. In 2002 and 2004, Iowa was Big Ten co-champions, going 8-0 in conference in 2002, ranked as high as #3 at one point. Iowa finished #8 in the nation in 2002, 2003, and 2004. However, I understand sentiments that he underachieved in 2005 and especially in 2006 and 2007, but 2008 was the beginning of Iowa's resurgance.
idk about the national title game, but Rose Bowl is looking very possible since there are only three 1 win teams in the conference which is Michigan State, Penn State, and Ohio State...we could beat Michigan State this weekend and Ohio State later and we clinch it if we win against Michigan State and if Penn State beats Ohio State...very possible
i was at a marching competition during this game they anounced the score and how penn state scored and we were all like shit oh well then my friend told me clayborn blocked the punt and ran it back everyone got really excited there was more applause for iowa then for the winner of the competition
I love da Hawkeyes Style: SMASHMOUTH! And its why Shon Green is a BEAST in the NFL! Hawkeyes, please dont change to da Spread like all the copy cats in college football! Bama experimented wit it but when in doubt, stay Smashmounth!
@BiggerBango The Big Ten had four schools with ten or more wins. Northwestern won 9 games. No other conference can say that. The Big Ten was the 2nd best conference last year.
@Finne116 I hate to sound too annoyingly optimistic but I think Iowa's learned for their past mistakes. The mistakes of 2005 caused Iowa heartbreak up really through 2008. But the Hawkeyes should be almost invincible this year.
@cavaleer I thought PSU's offense looked good outside of the O-Line, which actually was very ordinary, while the defense was unreal. PSU's Defense looked good and very speedy until Iowa took the lead then looked like they had the wind sucked out of them. That's why I consider PSU as a huge win for Iowa, even bigger than GT. Completely agree about OSU, though, Iowa had a few missed TD passes and worse yet, missed chip shot Daniel Murray field goals. Iowa likely will beat OSU this year at home.
@Soxzfan101 if you're talking about post-season, yeah, you're right, but if you're ranking the conferences based on the ENTIRE season, then the Big 10 shouldn't be that high up, and the ACC should probably be in it's place (which frustrates me as a Big12 school fan)
Wasn't really a blowout but there was really never a point in the game where I felt worried... 67-0 the past 2 years! If Minnesota had anything that resembled a QB they probably would have beat us!
As a Penn Stater, the intro by Musberger prior to this game has been playing in my head all week leading up to the 2023 Whiteout. The last time these two met was in 2021 in Iowa City, and the Hawkeyes escaped with a 23-20 win with controversy filling the air. Now, 2 years later, Penn State with arguably the best team they've had since 2008, has a chance to get long-awaited revenge on a team and fanbase that disrespected them dramatically. In a sea of white, the Nittany Lions are looking for the same statement they made against Iowa in 2016. If not, it'll be 2009 all over again. (It's ironic that this game will have the same conditions and game time temperature as both 2009 and 2016)
supersamurai563, I dont see Iowa "drafting" 4 and 5 star recruits, but USC, Texas (neither of which I mentioned) and Florida dont "draft" 4 and 5 star players. They RECRUIT them. But I will give you that you'll do a excellent job with the talent that you do have. And once again Penn St is a good team but they were way overrated at 5th in the country. So that was definitely a key win for Iowa and was the deciding factor when it came down to the Orange Bowl, but that doesn't prove anything.
@MVillani1985 I'd very surprised if we beat Penn State 35-10. The Nittany Lions have the Iowa game circled on their schedule. I think we beat the Lions 24-13.
If Kentucky's defensive line can reach Tebow i'm sure Iowa's(who has a ten times better DL) could... I think Tebow would be pulling turf out of his helmet.. Don't get me wrong I think Florida would beat Iowa but it would be a lot closer than people think... Everyone has doubted Iowa all year, keep it going... I'm more worried about Iowa tomorrow against Michigan st in East Lansing. They are on upset alert....
When did we just barely beat a 6-6 Iowa team? I know it's not recently because the only 6-6 Iowa team we played we beat 27-7. Or are you talking about someone else?
northwestern is a legitimate football team. they played some great defense to counter iowa's, so don't discredit their good game. and your offense would be shaken too if your starting qb got hurt after 19 straight starts! iowa has a good excuse for their ONE loss this season. let's see...minnesota has FIVE. what's YOUR excuse?
@cavaleer It didn't matter who Penn State had at quarterback last year, the way Iowa's Defensive line dominated their O Line can make any quarterback look average.
Iowa was terrible in 2012. There were NO good players on there. Vandy was a flop and there was hardly any returning players from the previous season. So it doesn't surprise me that PSU beat them. PSU always gets good recruits. And you look at all of the games Iowa played this year, never a blow out. Iowa will be back. I hope to see a great Iowa-PSU match-up again like in 2008 and 2009. B10 football is awesome.
@SocraticWisdom399 What are you talking about? Penn State was up 10-5 going into the 4th and Iowa's last field goal was just to put it away (personally, I was glad they didn't kick the XP after that punt block but in all reality that's what Iowa should've done), unless you mean Iowa could have won 22-10. I admit, Iowa was the better team, which is why the Hawks finished #7 and won a BCS bowl, while PSU finished #8, but it's not like you were up 21-0 at halftime and let up on us either.
Yup, 13 years later this is still my favorite Hawkeye highlight video
Hey man, thanks! Go Hawks!!!
It’s amazing
God, this game hurt so bad! After we scored on the first play of the game I thought we were going to run away with it. Damn you Iowa! No matter how good we are you guys ALWAYS give us issues.

this wasn't an upset, Iowa was clearly the better football team
BEST D-LINE IOWA HAS EVER HAD TOGETHER......
The Linebacker Corps was pretty good that year. Pat Angerer is tearing it up in the NFL.
why ya' gotta screw up a good highlight reel with that irritating soundtrack.
Oh my god! Completely forgot about these games, but now I remember watching them!
Thank you for posting this! I was looking for the opening all week long. I am a Penn State fan for life and the opening gave me chills. I will be honest, you guys own us right now. Greatest game of hawkeye football I will probably ever see again BIG TIME WIN BABY
i watched this video 10 times cant get enough of it
Saturday night was awesome! I loved every minute of it. GO HAWKS!

Lol

And we probably would have won had stanzi not went out with a injury
Penn State owned Iowa in the 80s and 90s, it's just your up time. It'll all come around again. Always does.
Best Defensive Line and safety tandem in the Nation for the hawks that year
That is true, Penn State's defense played well until the momentum had completely shifted, and it looked after that blocked punt like two different teams had taken the field. That promo at the start with Brent Musberger narrating sends chills. So good; kind of like a big MMA fight promo.
Boise state the most underrated team of the last 2 years.....the second....Iowa!
Loved it. Night game, @ #5 PSU, crowd in full white out... enter the Hawks.
I love this video.

If Jewel Hampton stays healthy this year and gets his priorities straight, look out Iowa opponents. Iowa will have an outstanding RB trio.

I was there and that was a great game!!!
I think Iowa has a better chance than everyone is giving them this weekend!
Notice how many great plays Karl Klug (#95) is involved in! He'll have a great NFL career!!!!
love tis video
love this song
I dont think Brent liked it But I loved this
Go hawks
maybe big ten champs
Can you send me the complete game if I send you a dvd and postage? I have been desperately looking for this game. Cannot find it anywhere.
@WThomasPSU3 the second consecutive upset sting a little bit?
I'm so Happy that The Beast! Clayborn is coming back for his senior year! 6 Seconds of Hell!
I just hope I'm wrong and Penn State goes bowling (I think PSU goes 5-7 (1-7) or 6-6 (2-6) right now).
stronger + Iowa hawkeyes comeback= WIN
hell yeah...hopefully iowa can actually beat you guys...its been lopsided over time but it will be a great game...im happy that michigan is back too
@BullzOnParade17 I imagine that it would have looked like Iowa's victory over Penn State. Florida would have led early, then Iowa would have adjusted, then the slumbering offense would have woke up and beaten Florida something like 34-24. We saw that with Stanzi there's no hole Iowa can't get out of. Iowa trailed 21-7 at halftime against Indiana, then still trailed 24-14 after three, but ended up going from losing big to actually blowing out Indiana 42-24.
this is awsome!
@Finne116
If the Hawks don't let success go to their heads and stay healthy, we can be very good. I think the offensive line will start out average and be really good by the time October comes. Riley Reiff could be Iowa's next stud offensive lineman. Our linebackers will be just fine. Tarpanian was a stud on Special Teams last year.
The guy who blocked the punt looked like Troy Polomalu from the back
be in the National title no questions asked... But give the hawks some respect. It may not be pretty but they keep winning!
Just go look at the site.. you played Iowa in the 06 outback bowl... It doesn't matter if was part of the 05-06 season.. Just go look at the outback bowl site or ESPN
@Soxzfan101
The Big Ten beat the ACC and PAC 10 Champion. What other conference can say they beat two conference champions?
@MVillani1985
The beginning of the new Iowa run began in the last four games of the 2000 season.
How many games did Penn State win from 1998 to 2011?
@BiggerBango
The Big Ten had four schools with ten or more wins.
But the Hawkeyes should be almost invincible this year.
i'm not even a Iowa fan, and i know that if they had ricky stanzi healthy all year last year then they woulda won the national title
Too bad Wehger (sp?) got himself deep in and left. He was such a quick back and fun to watch.
@Soxzfan101 if you're talking about post-season, yeah, you're right, but if you're ranking the conferences based on the ENTIRE season, then the Big 10 shouldn't be that high up, and the ACC should probably be in it's place (which frustrates me as a Big12 school fan)
We finished 8th in the nation from 2002-2004!! When is the last time Michigan finished top 10?
I'll be giggling as you, your family, and your friends are crushed when the big one hits.
We're not all as nice as everyone likes to claim.
Love,
Iowa
6:44 - 6:47
That's my favorite part.
:)
Black and Gold blood until the day I die.
@cavaleer
Have you ever seen him play LB or SS? I sure haven't. He's getting his shot as a QB at Washington.
(It's ironic that this game will have the same conditions and game time temperature as both 2009 and 2016)
Hope you’re happy 😂
@@anthonypaguada2302 Yes I am. Good game though.
supersamurai563,
I dont see Iowa "drafting" 4 and 5 star recruits, but USC, Texas (neither of which I mentioned) and Florida dont "draft" 4 and 5 star players.
@MVillani1985
I'd very surprised if we beat Penn State 35-10. The Nittany Lions have the Iowa game circled on their schedule. I think we beat the Lions 24-13.
intro= awesome
Pretty much. Especially since it'll shut Iowa fans up for a whole year.
northwestern is a legitimate football team. they played some great defense to counter iowa's, so don't discredit their good game. and your offense would be shaken too if your starting qb got hurt after 19 straight starts! iowa has a good excuse for their ONE loss this season. let's see...minnesota has FIVE. what's YOUR excuse?
128-0 is like a fuckin NCAA Football 2009 score on recruit mode lol
@cavaleer
It didn't matter who Penn State had at quarterback last year, the way Iowa's Defensive line dominated their O Line can make any quarterback look average.
