This episode has a really great premise that holds for most of it, until it kind of crashes and burns in the end. There is, however, a reason for it: Steven Berkoff. Apparently, he was so difficult to work with that he (whether intended or not) effectively sabotaged the filming of the concluding scenes. They had to do some finessing of the plot and editing, which was why the end was so rushed.
Some of the scenes of him as the Shakri were even just stuff of him standing around or walking around on set between takes. He wasn’t supposed to be a hologram either but there was so little to use they had to have him zapping around the set to make it all make sense. Shame really as this for me is the one single chibnall story that’s watchable from beginning to end, just until that really bad ending
@@obiwankenobi687 Hiring another actor and a day of reshoots would've been the way to go.
@ shows have a budget, schedules, time frame. This is also being produced as part of the most expensive year for the show with an extended series 7, the 50th, multiple shows to commemorate it, specially filmed minisodes, prequels and a Christmas special. I don’t suppose it was as easy as that, you can’t just hire an actor to show up so soon for a day, you may no longer have the studio space
@ I love Richard briers 😂 seems he managed to tone it down a bit for torchwood
Berkoff played that cube-man villain at the end, right? Yeah, I bet he was difficult, given that he was the worst part about the episode. 😅
I wish I could talk to some people about the video from "Nitpix". He made a video about all 4 episodes that were written by Chris Chibnall (until that point) years ago and he GLORIOUSLY sums up what's wrong with this episode.
2:12 that is Brian Cox, once a musician and now an amazing astrophysicist who’s shows are phenomenal and who even hosted a special one off science of doctor who show for the 50th anniversary
Funny that both Brian Coxes were used around the same time. The astrophysicist here and the actor in An Adventure in Space and Time
@ also a few years earlier in the end of time as the elder ood
Can't wait for the 50th reaction. 🤩🤩🤩🥹
It's gonna be a whopper!
That iconic final scene of the 3 of them in front of the TARDIS is the definitive dream team shot
This episode really makes me wish that we got to see The Brigadier in the Sontaran 2-parter from series 4. He was only mentioned briefly, and it's a shame that we never got to see him interact with at least one of the modern Doctors before Nicholas Courtney passed away. It also would have made this scene hit a lot harder for new fans who haven't seen the classic series, you're 1 of 2 reactors I've seen that actually know about the Brigadier when watching this episode.
"The conclusion felt a little rushed". Yes, they had to rewrite the conclusion because the actor that played the shakri was "difficult" on set and refused to perform some of his lines.
If you remember towards the end of The Wedding of River Song, The Doctor makes a phone call in the TARDIS and is told Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart had died. He was an old friend of the Doctor's, and was Kate's dad. All I can say is he led UNIT for a long time, as was even mentioned in the Tenth Doctor story The Poison Sky, as being stranded in Peru, due to the actor's (the late, great Nicholas Courtney), being unavailable. I would like to go into more detail, but given you are currently working your way through the classic era, I don't want to give you any spoilers.
I've not watched Classic, but when he talked of companions dying, I thought he meant like the girl in the fire place where he visited her throughout her whole life, years passing each time he went through that fireplace to her, to then invite her to travel in the Tardis but she died before they could leave.

Two companions die in the Hartnell era story The Daleks' Master Plan.
First, Katarina pops herself out of the airlock, to kill Kirksen and save the team.
Then in the final episode, Sara Kingdom gets aged to death by the Time Destructor.
After that there's a big gap until the next deaths.
The EP title reminds me of Charmed, anyway this is the last EP written by Chris Chibnall in the 11th Doctor's tenure until Series 11 came with the 13th Doctor.
My favorite thing about this episode was the bond between The Doctor and The Ponds! The resolution to the episode may have been the weakest point since I felt it was very anti climatic, but seeing The Doctor take some time off to spend with his family was EVERYTHING.
In relation, the last shot of them going into the TARDIS was the very last shot that Matt, Karen and Arthur did together.
If that's how you look with no work on hair you've nothing to be worried about
The challenge of selling cubes was supposed to be on the British version of The Apprentice
Yeah, Chibnall can't wrap up a story neatly for the life of him.
This had nothing to do with him. The guy who played The Shakri was difficult to work with and refused to act, essentially sabotaging the end of the episode and because they were stuck for time, they had to quickly re-write the episode
@@enbysheriff yes, but you can re-write it well. Well, I don't know if you could, but he definitely can't.
@katearcher8514 but he didn't have time because it wasn't his fault
And we nkw have Kate! One of my favourite characters 😊
I have to concur with some folks from your previous reaction: I don't mind your hair like this. 😅
It actually looks kinda awesome.... 🤔🤷♂️
The conclusion was supposed to be different but the guest star bad guy was such a dick to work with that they changed the ending to sort of just be done with him and move on.
Your about to hit angels take Manhattan and it's gonna hurt alot. It's one of those mile stone for any doctor who fan
Shes already long past it. We are waiting for it :D
If you’re worried about spoilers, you only need to worry for her audience, not her. She’s all caught up
I never really understood the how many years it is for Amy and Rory thing, and how many years have passed on earth since they’ve been away. As surely all the present day invasions that happen after their departure, say in 2013 or 2014 for example, they should really have experienced and seen them ? 🤔
I cannot remember if this is headcanon or I read it in an article somewhere... So, while I swear I read it in an article, as I cannot remember for certain, I will treat it as headcanon. I always got the feeling that this episode was supposed to be the overarching story of the season/series. However, that sure it could have been decent, with the anniversary coming up, it seemed... too anti-climatic. So, they decided to switch gears and just turn this into an episode (instead of the first half sprinkled throughout the season/series and rushed the ending that would have been a full episode).
I mean, think about it, the boogieman type character being revealed, would have been perfect for the end of a Part I, or the beginning of a finale. The Ponds repeatedly trying to decide to stay or not. Brian being introduced early in the season/series staying behind and watching the cubes not wanting to go anywhere (kinda canceling his growth at the end of his previous episode), the "how long were they gone" scene would have had even more impact if at the end of "A Town Called Mercy", etc. Sure, they had to write in the filler bits, but it works.
Hadn't heard that. Don't like the idea but it does make sense and would have tied everything together.
Would we have been spotting the cubes in all the other episodes? 😁😁
"Alert, alert!"
"What is the alert about, Dalek Omega?"
"My steering is impaired, I have just run over a cube."
@markharris1125 More like when The Doctor would pick up or leave behind the Ponds. Get a snippet of what is happening with the cubes, maybe a conversation on the TARDIS, Brian left behind in the TARDIS between episodes (would have been hilarious if they didn't notice he was there watching a cube an entire episode), etc. Would have flowed better without having the filler bits. Certainly not the strongest arc, but not the worst we've seen either. It would also have allowed us to see the struggle of whether or not to keep traveling with The Doctor in real time instead of shoehorned into one episode.
One of my favorite #MattSmith #DoctorWho #EleventhDoctor episodes!!
THANKS!!!!
I hope you feel better soon. Take care.
Excellent episode and fantastic musical score by Murray Gold. Really pings the heart strings 😉
KATE! Boy, she sure came in quick after her father died. I wonder how long they had Jemma in mind and where was she during the season 4 finale? Well, you’ve seen it all, honestly her 6 year absence was so dumb, I’m glad Russell is doubling down on her. I’ve started to believe he laments how much he was unable to do with Nicholas Courtney that he’s all in on playing with UNIT in this new tenure.
Also I’ve wrestled with the idea these last several years as to whether they could’ve gotten Baby Shark if the episode was made when it existed. I settled on “Pinkfong would not approve how it would be used in the episode and therefore we’d be stuck with the Chicken Dance.”
The thing I love about Kate Stewart is that she comes from fanfic...
Apparently there was a fanfic in the early 90's where the brigadier refers to his daughter Kate, and the writer and show runner being such fans remembered this and used the name as a tribute...
Thanks, Britany! ⏳
Although I'm a big admirer of Stephen Moffat, I do think that during his era there was a lack of . . . quality control? There's lots of good stuff in here, especially at the beginning and the end, but it all falls apart. What was the creepy girl about? What about the people with box-shapes for mouths? I hear Steven Berkoff was 'difficult'. Well, dur, it's Steven Berkoff. You're the producer, get him to shape up or get rid of him. I'm not sure why he was even there to start with. The Shakri could have taken over Rory's Dad, for example, to speak to humanity, and Mark Williams would have done much better job than blinkin' Berkoff.
Plus, it would have been horrific for our team.
Script doesn't make sense? This is (was) a flagship show. Every episode should be the best it can be, and at the very least make sense. You're the head writer, rewrite it. I know you were busy with - well, it's almost 2013 - but for goodness' sake.
This episode really gets me annoyed. Wasted potential.
It happens a number of other times during his tenure as well, particularly in a couple of episodes written by someone who's very much in the news at the moment. I know one of those is much beloved by people (and Hugo Awards judges) but I think they're both stinkers.
It's good to get that off my chest. Loving the reactions, Britany.
You have had clues going all the way back to the first Matt Smith episode but you haven’t figured it out yet. No Spoilers
Power of 😴😴😴😴😴😴😴, let's hope they don't make the writer of this story the showru- oh no.....
P.S. Looking forward to next week.... :)
This episode felt so off first time watching. It felt like a good goodbye.
And yet you still look good. 😊
whats wrong with log?
this ending was CHEESY.
Nothing wrong with cheesy ;).
This is a lovely episode. I mean, I COULD list everything I don't like about it here, but "Nitpix" did such a perfect job at that. You just basically have to look up their video about Chris Chibnall (hack fraud 😅🤭) and hear him speak from my soul. 🤷♂️
I was only introduced to that a week or so ago. What a great video.
