    It's almost a new year and it is time for an upgrade!
    My sony PMW F3 has been rigged out with V-mount, Atomos Recorder, and a Portkeys EVF. This is how a cinecamera should be rigged out!

    Bought mine for 400 euros this fall. It had a whole 2 hours of use time in it (was some old insurance company salvage). It was cheap because the PL-adapter was a little broken (I didn't mind that). Together with SD-card adapter, EF-adapter and a 24 mm Samyang lens (used) it totaled to about 900 euros. It's considerably less than what I've used to buy photographing tools in the past, but just enough to have a fun and capable tool to play with during the weekends. Originally I just wanted to have something to go together with my Mavic 2 pro videos I've been making a few years. After buying the Sony the tables have turned (perhaps as they should) that now the drone footage goes together with regular video footage as "main attraction".

    •  2 роки тому +2

      Great deal man! I have a 24mm Samyang on my F3 about 90% of the time. Great combo. Especially when cropping to 2:35:1. Tight enough for depth of field and wide enough to get the environment around the subject.

    • @jeesjees2
      @jeesjees2 2 роки тому

      @ I have to agree. I've used the 24 mm almost exclusively too after buying it. It really fits well together with the F3.

    I'm not sure if you mentioned this, but the F3 has an Expanded Focus feature, where it zooms into the image to help nail focus. It only zooms into the middle, and probably only helps if you use the F3's screen, but its been working well for me and is surprisingly sharp.

    I still use this camera for studio work, the CineAlta color with S-Log is amazing. I fixed the focus problem by mounting a cheap 12" monitor on top with a baby pin to 3/4" adapter. I also bought for it an O"Connor 50D head which is very affordable way to mount a heavier rig on a tripod. But the hand-grip and native FZ mount are basically useless, and the menu system sucks if you have to make changes frequently. That's why I liked just setting everything once for the studio and leaving it like that. This was the same problem with the Sony F35 too, annoying as fuck to change settings. This is why I switched to Blackmagic for any kind of field work, though I know the F5 has better navigation.

    •  2 роки тому +1

      Cool! I find that the best way to shoot with it is just cine Ei mode. The only thing I do in the menu is changing Trim DB depending on what Mic I run with it. And that is a bonus most cameras cant do. Rest of the settings can be changed on the camerabody. Like The WB button. Nd filter and so on. But i agree the black magic cameras are super simple to run. I loved my Ursa for the ease of use. I'll check the tripod head. Thanks for the tip!

    Great video; your original F3 video inspired me to get one. I currently use it with an OKC 50 mm Russian lens and record to a cinedeck. I recorded a Shang chi review on it and it looks pretty good. I just gotta working on building out the rig and working on getting my better audio. The pre amps on my f3 I believe are damaged. Also contemplating getting an fz to Ef mount for it from optix. I currently have a Zeiss cp3 85mm lens I’m using with a canon 1DC. I’m wondering if it’s worth getting the mount adaptor to use it with the f3. Keep the vids coming. Your channel rocks!

    •  2 роки тому

      Hey man! Thanks for your kind words. Whats wrong with your sound? In my new video i show how to trim the gain in audio settings. That might help if your sound is distorted. If you want to keep investing in ef glas. Witch sounds lika good plan. Get the adapter and use it att full potential. 👍unless you wanna sell your f3.

    • @ValsVerdict
      @ValsVerdict 2 роки тому

      Thank you! I’ll def check that video out. I record to a wireless senheizzer g4 mke2 lavalier mic. There’s always like a humming pitch noise and the audio usually sounds low. I got a juicedbox pre amp to try to send the signal there and then to the f3 but so far the best audio I get is when I record straight to the canon 1DC cause I can monitor the noise level directly. I think I’m prob doing something wrong with gain levels or in post cause there must be a way to get a clean loud audio signal and remove the humming pitch at the same time it sounds like background static like noise. Audio seems so much more complicated tyrants video to me but I’m prob doing something wrong.

    •  2 роки тому +1

      @@ValsVerdict You need to adjust Gain in the transmitter and Trim gain in f3 audio inputs. I would skip the box. You only need to set your levels on camera one time and then you are good to record internally.

    Hey Josef! What a great video, I was totally surprised to finally see a brand new video about the F3 on the interwebs. I also own the F3 and I never had any issues with soft images on my Atomos Recorder. HOWEVER I am using the Atomos Blade with SDI input and I am recording all my footage in 1080i25. Many external recorders don't like that resolution and have problems displaying it properly. Maybe thats the way to a solution for your issue. Hope you release more awesome stuff in the near future! Cheers :)

    •  2 роки тому

      Thanks man! The image on my monitor looks interlaced. Id say it looks like 1080i but it only displays ONE field. So basicly half the resolution. Its not enough resolution to to see eye focus. Even when puncing in. Its strange...

    • @SrabbelOnYouTube
      @SrabbelOnYouTube 2 роки тому

      @ I see. Thats a weird issue, but apparently many manufacturers go this 'lazy' route to save computing power in their monitors. And you're totally right, it's basically impossible to nail critical focus but it's good to see that there might be a workaround with your viewfinder. I was also wondering: What kind of color profile do you use with your F3? Is it a modified S-Log or a totally custom color matrix?

    •  2 роки тому

      @@SrabbelOnUA-cam Its the standard S-log profile. Right now I just have it in cine IE mode all the time. In davinci resolve I start with a color transform. I set the gamma to Sony Slog but I use Arri Alexa as the input color profile. It's unclear what color space the F3 is actually using. It's not S-gammut that's for sure. I sometimes let the output be Timeline(rec709) but sometimes convert it to Alexa and LogC and then use the Arri lut. Sometimes one or the other looks better depending on scene and situation. And then colorbalance the image from there. I usually shift it sligly towards green as I find that more pleasing to the eye.

    • @SrabbelOnYouTube
      @SrabbelOnYouTube 2 роки тому

    I love this camera. I actually have two of them. The image simply looks great. In fact I find them very compatible with my Alexa Classic. Generally, I use a PIX-E5 monitor/recorder with them because you can zoom in on the Pix to check focus. One thing which is also excellent : The 1% spotmeter box at the center of the miniscreen. If you use a standard grey card or circular grey card reflector and hit 38% with it in front of your subject or face, all the other values automatically fall into place for exposure in SLOG. This is quick and invaluable and I really wish other cameras had this tool.

    •  2 роки тому

      Peter! Fx9 is everything I want and need. Good stuff. I used it once and I did use my port-keys with it. Its a more immersive experience than the fx9 monitor with the thing on because the image is bigger and sharper. However the color is not good in it. On the fx9 I just flipped the og monitor in front of the handle and watch exposure and color on that between takes. That was a nice setup. When I shoot with the F3 I do the same but with my Ninja V. Portkeys is about 1400$. I wish it was better. It should have come with a heatsink on the chip and a on/off function for the cooling fan. Peaking is not reliable is another problem.
