Is that a voice calling me softly?
Nothing in here is quite how it seems
Is that a whisper's touch or my fear?
Am I awake or lost in old dreams?
Everything's so cold, the air is so still
There should be nothing here to see
Is this a warning like in the black book?
There can be no one else but me
I see a darker shade of darkness
I hear a shadow hide in the light
    I feel the suffocating tension
    Within a terrible desire
Everything's so cold, the air is so still
There should be nothing here to feel
    But I hear breathing, a child's laughter
Can any part of this be real?
    Everything I work for
Everything I long for is always just to far
Everything I hope for never comes to be
Everything I bleed for burns a scar on me
Everything I fight for leaves a bitter taste
Everything I cry for laughs into my face
Everything I scream for barely knows my name
Everything I die for will die just the same
    In here with me
Is this the truth of your forgiveness?
Are you the stranger stood at my door?
Are you the end of things come calling?
Are you the answer that I wished for?
Everything's so cold, the air is so still
And there is nothing here but me
If I belong here and this is mercy
Then there's no place I'd rather be
    Everything I worked for
Everything I longed for was always just to far
Everything I hoped for never came to be
Everything I bled for burned a scar on me
Everything I fought for left a bitter taste
Everything I cried for laughed into my face
Everything I screamed for barely knew my name
Everything I died for died just the same
    In here with me

This, along with its past-tense reprise, is really the ultimate chorus:
      Everything I work for
Everything I long for is always just to far
Everything I hope for never comes to be
Everything I bleed for burns a scar on me
Everything I fight for leaves a bitter taste
Everything I cry for laughs into my face
Everything I scream for barely knows my name
Everything I die for will die just the same
      In here with me

Gary Numan is in a state of grace and creativity since 2013. His most brilliant period since 1979-1980. Splinter and Savage are magnificent.

I still say that the intro wants to be NIN's 'Something I can Never Have' so much that it hurts. And I still say that this is probably my favourite song on the album. And I'll keep on saying it.

The end doesn't come from resources themselves being naturally limited. It comes from greed in the need to demand more for what one another has. The limit to the things we believe to be limited in this moment in time are mostly lies.
The only limitations are the ones many intentionally keep. Or those pressed upon others through their own selfish taking and ransom of resources. The limit on food production, fuel, energy, service access, all lies hinged upon wanting more for each, bound and gagged by currency and the manipulation of them all combined.
Currency as a show through balance may in fact be necessary. But the lies in manipulating the worth of these things are not, and the manipulators of such things to bring end to ways and existence of lives before their time will be the undoing of balance and the undoing of the greater good it was all meant to provide.
Let not the ring leaders take your teeth and claws easily, but bite down and take not beyond your fill unless it's enemy that will undo you and your own. But thinking you need them or not. Never give up all your teeth and claws, lest you seek to embolden those others who keep all into those who would take all.

I stumbled upon this 2 years too late, apparently. This guy is a genius. His music was what made me buy albums when I was a kid. I bought his album. Then, I forgot him. I had no idea what he was really about. I went through the generic heavy-metal phase all teenagers go through (ZEPPLIN RULES!!!). I discovered alternative bands, like NiN (TRENT REZNOR IS A GENIUS) and Sonic Youth (You can't tell us how to fucking end a song!). But, after all this time it circles back to this. Gary Numan is an awesome songwriter.
