  • Today's puzzle is one of the most incredible sudokus we've ever seen. It's a debut on the channel for FinnishGuy and it's called Palindromaze. And if, Squid Game-style, you had to solve this to survive, what would your strategy be?! You can play the puzzle at the following link:
    app.crackingth...
    Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. In cages, digits must sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage. Grey lines in the grid are palindromes, which must read the same forwards and backwards. The clue outside the grid gives the sum of the digits along the indicated diagonal. Digits can repeat along the diagonal if allowed by other rules. Cells separated by a white dot must contain consecutive digits. Cells separated by a black dot must be in a 1:2 ratio. Not all possible dots are given. Cells with a grey circle contain an odd digit.

It was very enjoyable to see Simon's take on solving my puzzle. As someone commented below, this may have been one of the larger SET theory operations in CtC's history. For this, I got inspiration originally from Aad van de Wetering's Checkerboard puzzle. As I had created a palindrome puzzle shortly before Aad's puzzle was featured on the channel, combining some elements of the logic on Aad's puzzle with palindrome logic got me curious: could a puzzle like this be created?
Simon followed the clues towards the break-in. There were a couple of steps in the initial part of the solve where Simon found an alternative but equally functional approach to what I had thought about. If someone is interested in trying to spot those, there is an alternative way to constrain the contents of the 14-cage following the SET logic, and some palindrome logic within box 6 which could have provided some extra help. As I suspected, the video also contained plenty of colouring.
Thank you for featuring the Palindromaze! It certainly made my day.

Simon literally says, "This is one of the greatest Sudoku puzzles we have ever featured on this channel," in more than half the videos on this channel. So, a fairly generous use of the superlative. That said, Simon's relentless praise and genuine admiration of the constructors is a huge part of what makes CTC so fun to watch.

@@louisesuth8141 Hear, hear. I'm all for using colors for making deductions (and I know Simon LOVES coloring), but once a color has been resolved to a digit, there's no need to keep adding it to new instances of that digit. This is especially true when a color gets resolved very early during the solve. Besides running out of colors, the problem with continuing to color 6-7-8-9 after they've been deduced in this puzzle is that you have to constantly worry about about updating the digits and colors in parallel, when only the digits actually matter.

24:47 for me. That is brutal. This might probably be the first time I find myself physically applauding an idea on a puzzle. Not only is the idea of the break-in awesome, but the way it keeps going after you’ve found the main key and it basically solves the whole puzzle… Definitely one of my favorite puzzles of all time.

If I may suggest a quicker wind-up: from 47:51 the red-grey domino in row 7 must contain a 2 - this forces a 3 in r7c9 (also resolving the kropki dot with a 6 on the palindrome) which in turn forces the red-grey domino to be a 1-2 pair. The puzzle winds up very procedurally from there, I think - but nice to see it forced another way.

First looking at it, I thought the cages and "odd" cells were a sign the puzzle was inelegant and needed disambiguation to work.
However, after being stuck myself and not finding the set myself, watching it all unfold, with clue type leading to clue type, I am very impressed.

  • @amoswittenbergsmusings
    @amoswittenbergsmusings 2 роки тому +49

Pfff, I did it. What a puzzle! And ... I heard Simon say my late-night ode to the puzzle maven. His guitar in- and outros, his occasional Douglas Adamesque interjections and that video when he said The Raven, nah, if that isn't worth a little attempt to repay my debts, I don't know what is.
FinnishGuy gave a fantastic telegraph with his title. If you are aware of colouring proofs in number theory and combinatorics, checkerboard patterns are very accessible, cortically speaking. Then the sheer psychology of the association with mazes that are negotiated in palindromic fashion and the fact that the palindromes have even lengths, inducing a parity clash, a sort of domain wall separating the central cells, it all came together in my mind. I had no intuition *whatsoever* about those four residual cells, while Simon with his ability to spot weirdness was led to the application of SET much slower but with tonnes more insight.
From this uber-satisfying start it went downhill for me. I really struggled with the Y-wingy effect of the small/big palindrome interplay. That's what palindromes do: they put cells that are far away, into relationships that classically can only share a row, column or box. This puzzle was full of that sort of logic. In the end 88:51 but I live to fight another day.
Then Simon's solve: great song as usual. If I would not be totally convinced that Mark and he are, like, totally honourable men, I would have sworn that 4/6 pair in box 8 was just trolling the brethern and sistern. As it was, it was just Simon's weird-wiredness that we know and love.
I was featured on the channel and I have never set a sudoku! How weird is that? Hearing Simon say The Maven, I remembered what someone once said about Beethoven's music: "It sounds a lot better than it actually is". Not comparing myself to Ludwig here, of course, just stealing a great quote. But I *did* spend the first few years of my life on Beethovenstraat in Amsterdam 😎
Please forgive my rambling. Writing comments on CtC is a therapeutic mind dump experience for me. You can just skip it. Oh, you didn't, if you read these words. Who made that joke about the ultra-secret letter that had the PS "Destroy before reading"?

There’s storms raging outside where I live in the Dandenongs near Melbourne. At any moment I might lose power or have a tree crash through my house. But what’s my priority? Watching CTC 6.30 in the morning. The internet has cut out several times. I’ve changed from big screen to little screen on the phone with 4G, and then back to the big screen again just in time to yell about the white kropki dot in box 8 again! This coincided with another internet blackout and a quick trip to the loo. If the internet hadn’t cut out, I would’ve held on. Internet back on to watch the finale. Wow! Take a breath. Take a bow. What a puzzle and the poem at the end just widened the smile that was already on my face.

Simon, I have a quick tip for you... When you place a digit (or pencil marks) in a square, your mind seems to the go directly to look where this square goes in other boxes and you often forget to look what this square does to the box, column or row. Therefore you are missing easy triples, doubles and even naked singles.
    Example at 48:18

  • @57thorns

Largest? Other SET theory concepts are about as large. Instead of C13579 = 5 of each number = R13579, Simon could just as easily have used C2468 = 4 of each number = R2468, yielding the same sets of 20 blue and 20 orange cells after 16 cells cancel. Now one well-known SET theory concept is Phistomefel's ring: R34567 - box 5 = 4 of each number = C1289 yielding Phistomefel's ring and another corresponding set of 16 cells after 20 cells cancel.

Simon, thank you so much for your beautiful reading of my ditty. Just so that the brethern and sistern can see how much you added with your diction to the bare words, I'll copy those below. Knowing how careful you are with names on the channel, I hesitantly point out that my first name is usually pronounced AHmos rather than AYmos.
    [for Simon]
    THE MAVEN
Not so long ago in lockdown, I lived lonely in a ghost town
And considered: "Binge or no binge, that's the question for tonight."
While I sat there, not an inkling, suddenly my screen went blinking
And the UA-cam tab was tinkling: "This you've never seen before!""
"Just some clickbait," I dismissed it, "algorithm, just ignore.
This is one I fall not for!"
In my darkened lamp-lit bedroom, in my mind a dragonhead tomb,
Just one mouse click and I fled doom, entering the channel's door -
And while watching maven's logic, barely noticed my old clock tick
When my screen became a joss stick, joss stick I'd been waiting for -
Truly balm applied to bruises, crack of dawn worth waiting for -
    Puzzles, friendship and much more.

I've realized that Simon and I have completely different distastes in grids. Simon doesn't like over-pencil-marking, and I don't like over-coloring. Particularly telling in this puzzle when the 789 coloring provided no value, Simon removed the useful orange coloring instead of the 789 coloring (which I would have done much earlier as soon as their digits got filled in). Color-noise makes it really hard for me to scan the puzzle.
This is a brilliant puzzle -- though not really sure what it had to do with Squid Game. It involved coloring which I enjoy, and used SET in an interesting way to only provide one small bit of logic that would be hard to tell otherwise rather than something that is long-lived.

I find colors really helpful before you know what the number is, but I very much agree with you that once you know what the number is, a 789 pencil mark is much more useful than a smattering of colored squares.
It’s like how once you get a 23 pair, for example, you tend to remove the corner marks for readability. The colors are there to help, and should go away once their job is done.

Depending how you interpret "exactly 1 repeated digit" the logic about "can only be exactly 1 repeat since it's odd" at the start may or may not be right - while you cannot repeat two different digits, you can repeat one digit more than once if it's odd (in this case, 9,9,9,4 would get you there at first blush, even though of course it is later seen to be impossible due to the palindrome/set logic)

And as these sets only have 2 numbers, in box 3 have to be different elements of the sets, thus they are also the same set. In box 4 and 7 they have to be the opposite. To better remember it until you know the digits, you switch the colouring on one side, so that same coluors mean the same digits.
